31 Days of Horror |OT| Watch a horror movie every day in October.

XKuax1U.png

I'm posting this a little early to allow people time to begin hording movies if they wish to participate.

What is 31 Days of Horror?

31 Days of Horror is a self-inflected horror movie marathon in honour of Halloween. I've blatantly ripped it off from one of the hosts of the excellent Arrow in the Head podcast although I'm not sure of it's original origin. The goal of the marathon is to watch 1 horror movie every day for October all the way up to the 31st. If people enjoy this I'd like to attempt it every year.

The Rules

Note: Due to the difficulty of collecting and finding time to watch 31 movies in a month, please consider these rules as guidelines only. If you can't complete the task or have to relax the requirements a little, that's fine. This is all meant to be fun, not a job.

- On October 1st begin watching a full-length horror movie every day until your 31st movie on October 31st.
- If you need to include short films (I'll probably be including Masters of Horror Season 1) ensure they are 45 minutes in length or longer. Standard TV series (Supernatural, The Walking Dead, etc) do not count.
- If you need to skip a day, that's fine as long as you attempt to make it up another day. Ultimately you want to end up with 31 films watched at the end - or as close to that number as you can get.
- As the purpose of this is to expose yourself to new horror films, attempt to watch as many movies you haven't seen as possible. If you'd like to revisit a previously seen film, make sure it's been at least 5 years since your last viewing. You may end the marathon with a personal favourite, regardless or how many times you've seen it.
- After each viewing, you must post which movie(s) you've watched and your thoughts on it/them. Be as brief or as detailed as you'd like. Please number your movies to make it easier for me to track. Please follow the posting guideline from this post when posting your movies if you wish to have your progress tracked in the OP.
- You may also use this thread to discuss other users watched movies or ask for recommendations for your own.
- Have fun!

Participating Members & their progress):

Please see Post #1167 for latest list.

If you wish to participate please post in this thread or send me a PM and I will add you and your movies to the list. I will keep a running tally of each persons' movies here.

I'm in. I do this every year anyway! I just ripped all of my Simpson's Treehouse of Horror on Saturday in anticipation of Halloween this year.

I just watched Suspiria the other night for the first time and was so disappointed. I guess it doesn't hold up.

I'm down for this though

I love this idea. Count me in.

Why don't we all watch the same line-up of 31 flicks?

Awesome, I'll add you guys to the list.

Doing the same line-up of 31 flicks is a cool idea, but the logistics of everyone managing to get those movies seems way too difficult. I'm basically just going though my massive pile of to-watch DVD/Blu-rays and don't have Netflix or anything.

Edit: Does that mean you're in too jon bones?

Good point.

I watch less than 10 movies a year (more a TV guy), so this is going to be a challenge. I love horror movies though so I'm up for it. I watched a whole whack of them last year and I also watched the Treehouse of Horrors like SillyEskimo plans to.

Love me some "The Raven" Simpsons-style. :)

This is a great idea! Can anyone/has anyone put together a list of the best Horror Movies on Netflix instant and/or Hulu?

In for sure, was doing this anyway- too early to make lists?

Blasphemy.

Um, one question- can we ignore this part? I already know what horror movies I like, I watch "new" ones year-round.

Can we throw in a curveball and stipulate that these movies have to be from anytime after, I dunno, 2008? On one hand, it would keep us from all watching the usual Halloween/Phantasm/Suspiria/etc classics. Plus, I've been wondering if there have been even 31 good horror movies made in the past few years.

yessir

but i certainly can't watch 31 films in 31 days nor am i going to wait 5 years before rewatching or any other rules that may be in place. i'm just gonna watch a shit ton of horror movies.

Yeah, I'm not sure I'll follow all the rules.

I'm going to watch as many flicks that I haven't seen as possible, but there are a few classics that I just have to include, like Halloween and...well that's it really. I guess I kind of do fall within the rules then.

I'll update this post to keep track of all my movies, but still make new posts when reviewing them. Click each picture to go to that post.

I'm down, gonna give the Netflix stream a good workout next month. Already queved up some horror movies so I'm all set!

I'm considering the 1 month free trial just for this.

To answer some questions:

Nope, it's not too early to make lists, afternoon delight. It may even help others find movies to start. Just don't actually begin watching the movies until Oct or count any you watched before.

And for those of you who are saying you want to bend the rules, like I said in the OP, they're just guidelines. If you want to include classics like Halloween feel free too as long as you re-watch it within the time period. Just do try to include a lot of previously unseen movies as well, don't go and watch the exact same set of movies you do every year and that's it.

Oh, and please number your movies when you post them. I'd like to keep a running tally so it'll make it easier for me if you do.

Interesting idea, but I think giving it a time window would make it too difficult for people that are going to attempt a full 31 movies. I personally plan to go though a lot of 80s trash. No one said they had to be good movies :)

THE DEAD ARE AMONG US!
In Italy, it was considered the 'unofficial sequel' to DAWN OF THE DEAD. In England, it was known as ZOMBIE FLESH EATERS and banned as obscene. Blue Underground is proud to present ZOMBIE in a new 2K High Definition transfer from the original uncut and uncensored camera negative. Each flesh-eating frame has been lovingly restored to skull-rotting perfection under the supervision of Cinematographer Sergio Salvati (THE BEYOND). Netflix version is the gorgeous, but edited US version. It loses a lot of violence and other scenes. Still liked it though and the print is great.

Granted you are going to tell me you didnt see the Netflix version! lol

Don't forget Hong Kong with Ebola Syndrome, Boxers Omen, Run to Kill, and wait till you see Bollywood Horror (including the Freddy knockoff) and crazy shit from Indonesia like Mystics of Bali and oh so much more!

Think Global! :)

There's a Bollywood Nightmare on Elm Street knockoff? Oh man...

Awesome, awesome, awesome idea. So awesome, in fact, that my wife and I made our list last week!

Instead of going for new films, we're watching films exclusively out of our physical collection, so I'm not sure if I can participate in the thread or not. However, I'll certainly be keeping an eye out for films I'll want to watch later.

Here's my list in case anyone needs a little inspiration. It's got a little bit of everything, so hopefully you'll find something interesting.

0. Return of the Living Dead/28 Weeks Later
1. Nightmare Before Christmas/Cabin Fever/Zombieland
2. Death Becomes Her/Near Dark
3. The Exorcism of Emily Rose
4. Sleepy Hallow
5. Killer Klowns From Outer Space
6. The Others
7. Slither/Dead Alive
8. Evil Dead/Blair Witch Project
9. Evil Dead 2/Army of Darkness
10. Grave Dancers
11. Pet Sematery
12. Zombi 2
13. Thirteen Ghosts
14. 30 Days of Night
15. The Thing/The Ring
16. Friday the 13th
17. From Dusk Till Dawn
18. Demons

I'll be doing this as well!

I need to go scour through my dvds/blurays/vhs and hard drive collections and make a list of recommendations.

Seen List: Demons, The Thing, Sleepaway Camp, [REC], The Hitcher original, The Ruins, High Tension, Hills Have Eyes remake, The Exorcist, Black Water, Halloween , Evil Dead 2, NotLD.

Unseen List: Prom Night original, Nosferatu: 1979, Q The Winged Serpent, Rubber, Kwaidan, Cemetery Man, Night of the Demons, House by the Cemetery, Phenomena, Cat o' Nine Tails, House (Hausu), Opera, Bird with the Crystal Plumage, Murder Party, Lets Scare Jessica to Death, Wild Zero, Dead and Buried, Orca Killer Whale

Found a list of ones I had been meaning to see... I'm excited.

Nope, it was a BluRay rip. I liked the murder scene in the beginning and the barbed wire scene but that was pretty much it. It was honestly kinda boring but not bad. I guess I just had high expectations because of the praise it gets.

I did this before on a film board I used to visit. Just a warning, I can watch 2-3 movies a night while working. However, on weekends I don't tend to watch movies at all so it doesn't get too outrageous.

That's a massive list, feel free to participate in the thread even though you've seen already seen them as long as they're rewatched during October. Any list that has Demons on it is good in my book.

Honestly, I think most of Argento's works are really overrated, even Suspira. Personally, I'm more a Fulci, Bava (Sr/Jr), Cozzi, and Mattei guy.

Count me in! Me and the fiance were just discussing doing this last week, so this is a great opportunity to see other peoples selections.

Mostly we're going through Netflix to add up or queue. We'll do the usuals (Friday the 13th; Nightmare on Elm Street), but I'm hoping to find some new gems to add to the list.

Oh man, I envy you because you get watch Cemetery Man, Dead & Buried and Wild Zero for the first time. There's some other really good stuff in there too.

I friggin' love me some Cemetery Man. I think that's gonna be my #31 even though I've seen it a bunch of times.

the first half of the movie was awesome, second half was a mess. I still get scared of the dark when i think about that nude, scarred woman.

Here's the full title (and the other two volumes.
The Bollywood Horror Collection Volume 1: Band Darwaza/Purana Mandir (R1, US)
The Bollywood Horror Collection Volume 2:Veerana/Purani Haveli (R1, US)
The Bollywood Horror Collection Volume 3:Mahakaal/Tahkkana (R1, US)

Let me also recommend from Mondo Macabro some Indonesian films (strictly horror...well okay plus Lady Terminator!)

Oh I got this for 5.99. You bet I'm watching it!
ernest-scared-stupid-blu-ray-744660-large.jpg

It's in full HD and it's widescreen. I love the crap out of this movie

I'm in, though it's going to be tough to arrange a list with 31 movies that I haven't seen yet. At least, without resorting to the plethora of low-budget, "B-tier" horror flicks.

I'd love to do this. However, I don't see the wifey going for it. She does watch some horror movies, but they probably are one of her least favorite genres.

I have a lot in the Netflix queue, and a bunch on DVD i've wanted to watch.

bought them long ago because I heard good things. Are these close enough to "horror"?

High tension
Hard candy
Omega man (it has to be better than I am legend...has to!
Zombie strippers (already calling it... the greatest film ever)
Shadow of a vampire

Among others.....

Need to see Halloween 2, rec, nosferatu, pretty much anything from the Italian directors talked about in this thread. I'm familiar with them, just never seen them.

B-Tier doesn't equal Bad Tier. :)

Unrelated I wish Universal would start with the Blu-rays of their horror classics. They already have had HD masters for awhile (and you can rent them on PSN).

Oh from Criterion.

So anyone interested in a HorrorGAFCast Podcast?

I can do all the setup and tech end. I can give a ton of different topic suggests and see who wants to join each one. Anyone up for that?
