Is there a good reason why we should stop using the word 'retarded'?

Okay, so I'm getting flak for naming the threads "Retarded Lie Day" and some people are upset and stuff. I'm not an asshole (okay, not a huge asshole), so I want to open this as an venue to discuss this without derailing the actual threads. If I am wrong, I am willing to admit it and change.

Why are people jumping on the use of "retarded" as opposed to so many other possible insults I could have used? For the record, Retarded Lie Day is not something I came up with either, but something that has been used historically on this forum to describe April Fool's Day. Why is the word worse than stupid, moronic, or dumbfuck?

Is it because the term retardation references mental illness? If that is that case, why is using an actual disability as a description for something (often in an insulting form) automatically a bad thing? Other disabilities such as blindness and lameness are also used in insulting ways. It is viewed as socially acceptable, and no one questions it. Would people who are against the use of the term 'retarded' also be opposed to the use of "Are you blind" and "Are you illiterate" when making a remark about how someone has either missed something very obvious, or didn't bother to read something carefully enough?

I don't think making fun of people with handicaps or disabilities is cool. It is not cool, and it has never been cool. But I am also not a 400% politically correct person, especially in a casual environment, and I do not feel I need to be. If something is deemed completely unacceptable and offensive socially, I would not do it. But sometimes it is also a matter of people being too sensitive towards something which is not harmful.

This could be a good thread to discuss and educate people about your stand on why the word should not be used if you feel strongly about it, and it can also be a platform to express that for the people using it, I don't think we really mean any harm. I don't see how using the word retarded to describe a stupid day is harmful to anyone.

When did this "movement" against the use of this word start, and what is it such a big deal to some of you? Your voice can now be heard!

No and this people are trying to just nullify society with stopping everything. There comes a time when stopping something in the name of progress actually diminishes society

I really don't see the problem of it, but I could understand that it may upset some people.

I just feel like when people use the term "retard(ed)" or "gay", that they have basically taken on their own meanings outside the original definition. If you called someone that was mentally handicapped a "retard" then I could understand anger and/or resentment, but if you just call something "retarded," well I don't see the big deal.

It's not offensive. It's descriptive. Certain segments and interest groups have decided that they like a different term better now. After 10-20 years, that new term will gain what they see to be negative connotations, and soon we'll repeat the cycle. Disabled is going out of style now as well, as are any other number of common definitions. Don't give in to the nonsense.

And in before someone compares it to the N word.

No, but in that case lets stop banning people for using the words "gay", "faggot" or "tranny".

Pretty much this.

I don't have any issue about using the word, but it does seem very hypocritical to enforce stuff on these words but not that one.

That doesn't answer my question. It seems you are simply trying to be annoying instead of helping me understand what you are upset about.

He's got a perfectly valid point that you're not seeing. "Retarded" is causing people to be offended same way as saying "gay" offends homosexuals.

How is it any different than the use of fag/gay which are banned words on here?

I still use the word, I don't find it offensive. When I describe something stupid, I call it retarded. If someone did something stupid, I call them retarded.

I would never call a mentally ill or disabled person a retard though. That's awful.

I think it's a geographical thing. Some places the word has no real attachment to the mentally disabled anymore whatsoever. And some places it does. It's a weird issue.

I mean if you look at urban dictonary, none of the top entries even refers to the mentally disabled at all. Hell, most of the definitions for retarded are positive.

You don't call a retarded person retard. It's bad taste. You call your friends retards when they are acting retarded. ~Michael Scott

I've gotten shit for calling stuff retarded, but there simply is no other word to describe how stupid, idiotic and/or regressive something is.

I'm pointing out the hypocrisy. That was why I brought it up in your other pointless thread. If this was an "anything goes, sensitivity be damned" forum, then I wouldn't' have a problem with it, let people say what they want. But it clearly isn't. I have a problem with it because if I were to have come in here and say "This thread is gay" I would be banned, probably by you.

It's all about the context. You didn't say it to offend mentally ill people.

In other words they can fuck off with their false outrage.

For real?

Are you completely oblivious to the massive media campaign to demonize the use of "retard" as a pejorative?

Personally I'm enjoying Political Correctness running wild. When even the PC can't keep track of what's PC and what's not - oh the hilarity! ^_^

You say that as an insult with reference to society but retarted is now mostly a joke word. No one thinks of people who are mentally challenged when saying the word retarted

But even the connotation of "retarded" (in common usage) implies that something is stupid. Just like calling something "faggy" generally means it's effeminate.

Retarded refers to mental limitations. Stupid/dumb refer to levels of ignorance, which is something that person can change. Retarded isn't even being used correctly, and it's not a matter of political correctness.

It's like using rape to refer to victory in videogames

GAF is one of the most easily offended forums I've posted on so I'm not even surprised that you caught flak for the thread title

Hah, I knew you would.

It's just a word. Words have power, but only as much power as we choose to ascribe to them. There's no reason to stop saying 'retarded'. I say it all the time, and it's always applicable.
