Nike commercial pays tribute to Donkey Kong...with a black man as Donkey Kong

EDIT: The point of this was to show the potential backlash Nike would have, but since it is being interpreted entirely differently from GAF we can lock this up.

Ad was legitimately pretty cool up until Whitey McWhiteguy went down the pipe, and then it just got weird.

Hasn't this happened before? I seem to remember a similar mag controversy with an "angry" black man and a white girl. Can't remember who, though

Commercial was missing what I was looking for. I'm not sure I saw the big deal but that mag cover I'm sure will have some talking.

He's Mario in the commercial, not DK.

I can already see where this thread is going with the OP's racial baiting, so ill just exit left now, lol

It got weird for me when whitey mcwhiteguy did that dunk. I was like, wait you're not supposed to make that dunk! You can't jump!

Are any black people offended by this, or is it just white people?
I'm not offended one bit. In fact, I like the video game homage.

I dunno, the over-the-top glee at throwing the obstacles makes me think no malice was intended. He's obviously having fun. He has the lone line of dialogue in the commercial too, and gets to call the protagonist "fool", if I heard correctly, like he's above all this and doing it for the lulz.

Eh, I don't get it. I mean...Donkey Kong is dark. Do people take this as insinuating something more?

I'm not black, so I guess that might be why I don't get it, but I really don't. Feel free to correct me.

Are commercials not allowed to put black people in any role besides the "hero"? Are white people the only bad guys in commercials now?

Stop finding racism in shit that isn't racist.

I don't think it's that big of a deal, it didn't stand out as much as I thought it would in the context of the ad. I wonder if it would be deemed offensive or too funny if it was Tyson, though.

I'd wait until actual controversy happens, if there's going to be any. Ving Rhames throwing flaming basketballs at a man a-la Donkey Kong isn't inherently racist. Again, it's all in the delivery. If it had been a black man actually acting simian in any way, grunting and such, that'd be one thing. Ving's in a suit, laughing, and he gets the only line of dialog, which in fact belittles the guy doing the platforming for not succeeding at his level.

For all those asking why I'm outraged: I'm not.

The point of the thread was too show a video game-related commercial using imagery that has caused backlash in the past from other major companies using similar imagery.

I tried to search for other instances claiming this commercial is racist and funny enough, only this thread appeared.

So what? A black dude can't play DK? Who cares what color his skin is. Fuckin people, man.

Holy shit, seriously. So Kong would have to be a white dude or it's racist?

Every single move has to be indicative of systemic racism or sexism or an undercurrent of pervasive rape culture or whatever. lol
