Republican Party representatives sitting on the Senate Budget Committee plan to present Congress with their latest findings on welfare programs in the United States this week, and their research reveals that the number of US residents receiving federal assistance isn’t only on the up but now is at its highest ever in the history of the country.

According to an excerpt from the committee’s new presentation, nearly one-in-three US residents receive government assistance — and that’s not even including those benefiting from Social Security or Medicare.

The committee’s findings actually put the figure of US residents on welfare close to around 107 million, which appears substantial when compared to statistics from only a few years ago. During the first quarter of 2009 when Barack Obama was inaugurated as president of the United States, roughly 97 million US residents were on the receiving end of federal programs.

And although the committee’s research does not take into account Social Security and Medicare, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), or food stamps, more than makes up for that exclusion: the study finds that the number of American receiving SNAP benefits have doubled in barely a decade.

Man, if only there were some sort of economic calamity that would explain why so many people were suddenly receiving government assistance. I mean, if the unemployment rate were around 8%, obviously there would be way more people on the rolls, but I assume they would've mentioned something like that in the report, right?

How do these findings help the Republicans' case?

"Under Obama, welfare at an all time high."

"Welfare state"

"Dependency on state, socialism"

Not that they weren't also at an all time high under Bush and that the population is growing. Not to mention the economy is in the tank, due to GOP policies... which is widening the gap between the rich and the poor and erasing the middle class for the worse.

I wonder how many of these people 1) say "the government never did anything for me!" and 2) will vote directly against their own interests in November.

Where I live, people are satisfied living off welfare, unemployment and food stamps the rest of their lives. My parents have a small business and need employees, but we can't find anyone that's willing to work. A few months ago, a woman called for her husband wanting to know if we needed anyone. When my mom told her we did, she said that he wasn't really wanting a job. He was just calling so he could keep his unemployment. I know of quite a few people that sell their food stamps, too. The system really needs to be reformed.

If the Democrats could get more of the 100 million to vote, they'd never lose an election ever again.

Wrong. Many of these people are republicans who have been convinced the government is doing nothing for them. I can't wait for someone to actually say "The government needs to keep its hands off our welfare/unemployment"

If you are a mother with more than one kid and no husband you can live like a queen on welfare and food stamps. Some women in my neighborhood have anywhere from 2-5 kids and get around $800-1,000 in food stamps alone plus welfare cash, so in their minds they have it made.

100+ Million Now Receiving Federal Welfare

By Daniel Halper

Texas Insider Report: WASHINGTON, D.C. – A new chart set to be released later today by the Republican side of the Senate Budget Committee details a startling statistic: “Over 100 Million People in U.S. Now Receive Some Form Of Federal Welfare.”

“The federal government administers nearly 80 different overlapping federal means-tested welfare programs,” the Senate Budget Committee notes.

However, the committee states, the figures used in the chart do not include those who are only benefiting from Social Security and/or Medicare.

Food stamps and Medicaid make up a large–and growing–chunk of the more than 100 million recipients. “Among the major means tested welfare programs, since 2000 Medicaid has increased from 34 million people to 54 million in 2011 and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, or food stamps) from 17 million to 45 million in 2011,” says the Senate Budget Committee.

“Spending on food stamps alone is projected to reach $800 billion over the next decade.”

The data come “from the U.S. Census’s Survey of Income and Program Participation shows that nearly 110,000 million individuals received a welfare benefit in 2011. (These figures do not include other means-tested benefits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit or the health insurance premium subsidies included in the President’s health care law. CBO estimates that the premium subsidies, scheduled to begin in 2014, will cover at least 25 million individuals by the end of the decade.)”

This is not just Americans, however. “These figures include not only citizens, but non-citizens as well,” according to the committee.

How DARE the people collecting welfare not live in horrible enough conditions for my taste! If they have a single physical possession they are scamming the system.

How do these findings help the Republicans' case?

Remember all of their "50% of Americans don't pay (federal) taxes" complaints? Somehow they don't see the issue as the rich sucking up all the money leaving people poor, but instead as the poor taking undeserved money that the hardworking rich should be getting instead.

And so many people actually buy it. :(

ITT - people exaggerate the views of the opposition.

You must have missed something. People are joking about other Gaf members who have said these exact things. They were dead serious.

Also, people on welfare need to get a job, and pull themselves up by their own bootstraps.

It's soviet era style propaganda. It has no place being recognized on the internet.

Its too bad. RT is a good source of news, and covers more than Kim Kardashian. Sure, they have their propaganda, but so does everyone else. Like this story for example.

So in your eyes, a family of 6 that makes $250-$400 a week can live like royalty?

This... this is a parody right?

I cant wait for president Romney and a republican lead house to finally start that trickle down spout that's been shut off for 4 years. They'll fix this welfare problem because you cant have 100 million on it if u just do away with it.

Not really. I can't tell you how many times I've heard Republican lawmakers bring up things like TVs and cellphones, as if in the 21st century they are such huge luxury items, that anyone who owns them and collects welfare, is obviously undeserving of welfare and trying to scam the system.

So what are they going to do? Tell 1/3 of the country that the assistance they receive is bad and they are going to take it away? Tell 1/3 of the country that they are only getting assistance because they are too lazy to work?
