Software you keep pimping to people, but nobody cares

You know that special piece of software, you love using.
It makes your computing experience more pleasing, or helps you stay organized, efficient, entertained or perhaps educated.

Either way, you're always dropping hints to your friends or coworkers, about this cool software, but... nobody cares!

Let's share some here, so they can get the love they deserve.
Here's one of mine:

Mactype - Ultimate font rasterizer for windows

This is a cool little program that takes over for windows font smoothing, producing a very nice, mac-like smoothing effect on all your text. You can even set it to behave more like iOS, or customize it quite a lot. Good suff!
 
I keep preaching the gospel of Alfred to my friends, but they don't get why it's a useful tool and can't be bothered to see for themselves in a couple minutes of use.
 
not sure if this really counts since it's packaged software, but ever since i started using ubuntu i came to love one of the programs packaged with it, tomboy notes. i'm not sure if windows has an equivalent thats just as good or if even there are better alternatives, but i don't think i can live without such a program anymore.
 
Nexus Dock. It's stable, well designed, free (basic version), actively in development, has tons of options and skin-support. Yet everybody seems to use Rocketdock or Objectdock, which are neither up to date, nor can keep up with the amount of options.


Mactype/GDI++ are extremely subjective, it looks awful on a lot of configurations because the font either bleeds out or makes everything look bold (which is probably the reason "nobody cares about").

A question about F.Lux: I used it about a month, but other than that it changed to a warm color temperature at around 10 PM, I couldn't spot any differences. Is there anything else to it?
 
I pimp Gimp to people I know but they seem to live in a black-or-white existence where you either use Paint or buy Photoshop. I'm not going to claim it compares to paid software, but it beats having nothing.

I will never understand why people love f.lux.

Used it for about 6 months (until I reinstalled osx)

Didn't even noticed the difference
 
Liking the love for Flux in this thread. Every now and then I disable the lighting effects late at night and remind myself how much of a difference it makes.

Amen brothers.

I always shake my head when I use someones computer with norton on it. It's such a hog and it's always warning about expiring.
 
Just tried that Flux thing on my ubuntu machine and shit went crazy. If you try it know how to get to your terminal and remove it without being able to clearly see.

Paint.net is a better half-way house imo. Gimp is certainly more powerful, but broadly inaccessible due to terrible UI.
 
Irfanview for lightweight photo manipulation, viewing, resizing, organizing, renaming.

Google Earth because I think it is one of the most amazing things ever.
 
Space Engine.

I cannot stress enough, anyone who is interested in space should check out this free program. It's seriously breathtakingly beautiful!

Yeah, gimp is a nightmare to work with sometimes and I consider myself pretty fluent with it.

Meaning legal restrictions? They get sued a lot, but have managed to stay afloat so far. They have royalty deals with some labels per wikipedia.

Meaning limits on song choice? It's pretty rare I can't find what I'm looking for. And it stays pretty up to date. Mumford & Sons's Babel is up on there, for example, and only 3 days old.

For those that don't know: Grooveshark is internet radio. Unlike Pandora, you pick the exact songs and order you want. With a huge catalog. Use to have iOS app, but it got pulled.
 
I wanted to try Mactype, but the installer in the link you provided is in Chinese so I´ll pass. Don´t want it installing a toolbar or something I don´t agree to.

It does, but you can lower the change very easy, also it has the option to disable for an hour, prepare to get your eyes burned than though.

If you find it distracting, it works, just tone down the difference but after a few days you should be used to it and when you disable it at you'll notice what an impact it makes.

When it is night, turn it off, if it doesn't make a difference something is wrong.

Noscript is the best anti-malware software out there. With browser add-ons a site can't load a script, a cookie, or flash cookie without my explicit permission. Ended up un-installing even MSE after even as well integrated as it is would only ever cause problems. Haven't run into an infection in years.

F.lux is awesome too.

Mint.com; Most people are afraid of their own money and their terrible management of it, though. So yeah ._.
 
workflowy--very flexible task manager to do list.
snagit--better than the os built in screenshot utilites, plus records screencasts
 
Noscript is probably the best browser tool out there. Really considering going back to firefox on windows because how great it is.

This is awesome! Thank you for showing me this.

I got an antivirus warning for mt64agnt.exe when I launched it, and I'm hoping it's a false positive because this is too nice to uninstall.
