Thanks to Divvy.

App reviews in the Play Store will soon require a Google+ account, and future reviews will be posted showing your full Google+ name and picture ... Reviewing apps will require a G+ account - it even says so in the string name, "reviews_google_plus_required." Your name and picture will be next to your reviews. If you don't have G+, you'll be prompted to join.

This is ridiculous.

It will discourage reviews. I don't want my name and picture to be associated with my reviews. Why? Why should I have to deal with that? Why do people have to know what apps I use?

People post dumb stuff all the time on their Facebook. This will just screw me over from complaining about shitty apps.

I also don't like this never ending trend of forcing G+.

Agreed 100%

I like G+ right now because it's a bundle of cool features that I can access. I won't like when it becomes this mandatory exposure of my public profile every time I want to do something involving Google.

Quite the opposite for me.

I post Amazon reviews under my real name and picture and love the ranking system.

Gives me more incentive to review and write more comprehensive reviews.

First youtube started prompting people to use their real name for their channel, now they are forcing people to use their google+ account and name for reviews.

What is this obsession with linking everything to peoples names.

The majority of things I do on google and android are linked to a mostly anonymous account which only identifies me via payment options, my second personal Google account is reserved purely for personal things and work related stuff.

It's always going to be in my best interest to do things like this, as it minimises any risk of my personal opinions and online activity being brought into question by the public via my professional body and workplace, should they take offence at something inane.

The very people acting like baboons on the internet are the same people putting graffiti in bathroom stalls. What if you had to sign your name and put up a picture of yourself in a bathroom stall after every time you wrote something like "No your mom sucks dick".

Anonymity can and does lead to outright defamation.

Ehh... I understand the pros and cons. I don't think Google is doing it just because they want more people to use G+, I'm sure they could make it so you stayed anonymous AND had to log in with g+ to do so (maybe, at best, they're doing it to sort of encourage a G+ 'culture').

At the same time... internet anonymity is going the way of the dinosaur. It's something I am not 100% comfortable with, but figure I'll just have to embrace utterly as we march on into this interesting future.

I'm fine with this.

I guess I understand if you are all about internet privacy, but I'm more into an open and transparent internet where you back up what you say. To me this just encourages better reviews.

How many keyboards does one man need?

Very comprehensive reviews if you told me prior to reading that someone could come up with a 4 paragraph review on a CFL light bulb I would have called you crazy.

Solid work Charlie, I do seek out reviews like yours when buying stuff.

This is the future.

Yesterdays fight for anonymity, will become tomorrows fight for identity.

Clear and secure methods of proving your identity will become the most important aspect of a persons's true digital existence.

Every review on their store is either 1 star (the text is too small, app sux) or 5 star (best app evar) anyways.

i already do it, but i can see why it would annoy some people to attach their real name to a review. what's funny is it will hamper the normal people, but the crazy folk and those mass spammers gaming the system won't be so easily deterred.

Don't be evil Google!

This reminds me of when they forced real names for G+ accounts

didn't they do that from the start?

I'm mostly fine with this. Hopefully it'll give people a little more incentive to write good reviews, kinda like Amazons verified review things.

Anything that makes people more accountable for the shit they spit forth is okay with me. People should always be willing to stand by what they have said.

Anyone actually pay attention to those reviews?
My short time on the store says its 100% useless.

Hopefully this helps (have my doubts).

Good. It will make people think twice before posting bullshit reviews.

Glad to see this put in effect, bringing some accountability for people's actions/comments, should stop quite a few.

We were all naive to think that anonymity was what made people act like shitheads on the internet.

This thread alone proves that idea wrong.

they are people that would make the same exact comments in person as well. The internet is not a factor in their opinion/comments.

Why would they want to stop people reviewing apps? 'cause that's what will happen

But people already use it in Amazon.....

The very people acting like baboons on the internet are the same people putting graffiti in bathroom stalls. What if you had to sign your name and put up a picture of yourself in a bathroom stall after every time you wrote something like "No your mom sucks dick".

There is nothing useful that can be written on a bathroom stall wall. 100% of what's written there is garbage. The content per se does not matter. In your metaphor, the name/photo requirement would be a good thing because it would discourage people from being shitheads.

This system also discourages people from writing reviews, the difference is that the balance of reviews are either useful or at the very least well-meaning. A very very small percentage would qualify as trash-talk. These reviews can be reviewed, dealt with, and removed without needing the person's identification--just by the account username being connected. I don't need to know your name or photo to moderate you on GAF.

Do you understand the weakness of the metaphor now?

Don't worry, no one actually cares what apps you use. On the flipside, why should people who put apps out have to deal with people trolling reviews sections without accountability? It's not like reviews are even meant to generate discussion the way a message board is. Are you under the impression reviews as they stand now anywhere online are some kind of bastion either way? How could this be a net loss in quality for reviews systems overall?

Enough of this shit. They already force us to use first name when reviewing. Full name, picture and G+ profile (showing your location)? Fuck off Google. I like my internet staying anonymous.

I like Google, but hate this trend of using your real name for their services. I will continue to stay far away from Google+ as possible until I can just use an alias.

(Yes, I have Facebook, a choice I wish I didn't make back then.)

I hope this won't negatively impact app reviews. I want to release an app soon, and if I don't get reviews...

They already force us to use first name when reviewing.

I tried just now, and they didn't for me. It just shows my online alias, not my first name (which is just "C" on Google lol).

I have a sorta G+ account with fake name and no picture. If requires a picture, I'll use the Ham & Pita pic on the body of a stickboy.

Bring it!

Very cool with this. As it stands, the review section is worthless, even for fact checking. I'd rather some sort of change I'm now of bettering it than nothing.

I'm fine with Google's decision, largely because I already use my real name in most websites. I'm sorry for those that don't want to, though.

Google's really pushing for real names on the Internet... YouTube is also suggesting people link their real names so that commenting will improve.

Everyone for this I assume would be fine with using their real name and picture on GAF?

I would be, totally.

Haha, thanks.

I like good reviews, so I try to write good reviews.

It cuts down on the number of Trolls without spines. But there are trolls that don't mind being known for trolling, so thats that. I think linking popular sites to accounts is generally a good idea for communication. Its optional on Youtube, but if it was tied to facebook accounts I think it might cut down on a bit of assholetry out there. its 2012. The government already has all of your personal information, and you're not stopping it by disabling a SINGLE feature of Google which already has you in its pockets.
