Forbes: 3 reasons why Sony's PS Vita® will crush handheld competitors

Something like the price drop needs to be permanent for it to have a chance. Opinions?

A Google search on the PS Vita yields hundreds of stories about Sony’s dual-stick, powerhouse handheld’s “disappointing sales.” It’s too expensive, lacks a decent library of games and worst of all, it’s irrelevant since millions of consumers play games for free on mobile phones and tablets. Truth be told, I was thisclose to selling my PS Vita for the same reasons. But now it appears Sony is ready to lay a serious smack down on competitors (and whiny gamers) thanks to three brilliant moves pulled off this week.

Price drop. High price might be the biggest bone of contention for many who have considered buying the PS Vita but have been holding off, waiting for an “inevitable” price drop. Between the device, proprietary memory card, games and accessories, the PS Vita ain’t cheap, that’s for sure. But now that attractive bundles are available (Call of Duty: Black Ops and Assassins Creed: Liberation for $199 on Black Friday!) it’s time to pull the trigger.

PlayStation Plus. The recent Firmware 2.0 update now means the generous PlayStation Plus program of the PS3 extends to the PS Vita. After the firmware update, I received my “Instant Game Collection” I was too cheap to buy the first time around: Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Gravity Rush, wipEout 2048 and Jet Set Radio. Nice.

Games. A handheld is only as good as the games it plays and the PS Vita is now firing on all cylinders. In addition to the aforementioned, there’s Persona 4 Golden, PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, Jetpack Joyride, Ragnarok Odyssey, a new Ratchet and Clank in January and Killzone: Mercenary to look forward to. Let’s not forget about PlayStation One classics, hundreds of “Minis” and independent games like Retro City Rampage.

Clearly, the PS Vita loves you. Now it’s time to love it back.

Please, stop attributing posts by random fanboy bloggers who have inexplicably been given placements on Forbes.com to "Forbes."

Edit: Apparently, attributing the slant of this piece to mere fanboyism was being overly generous. Sigh.

It's a fantastic system with a crap library. It's going to need more than ports to sustain its life. People aren't at all interested in crossplay, and will not buy a Vita just to play games that they can play on their PS3.

Kind of OT but what's with all the shitty hit grabbing video game related stories coming out of Forbes over the last while?

So many shit threads have been created because of stuff from them.

Edit.... aha. Well that is the least subtle way to do advertorials I ever seen. At least they are honest I guess.

If you like handheld gaming there is no reason not to buy a PS Vita.. It's truly a great system.

If you have something against Sony, or you're just a cheap bastard, then yeah, I guess those could be reasons to stay away.

I have a Vita (because I got it for $125), but I know a lot of my friends who love handheld gaming that have no interest in the Vita. The library of original games is atrocious.

Wastes hours checking old Famitsu software data, but that's why we love him.
I was going to make a joke about Sony paying for propagandists and then I saw this was written by an actual marketer.

I just want the Vita to reach PSP levels where it can get all these niche RPGs and other wierd titles. I loved the PSP for that.

Well at least I can excuse the crappiness of the article now. I can't believe Forbes puts up articles from actual marketers.

Classic example, really. Someone ask Tim Clark for a historical example of coming back from being outsold 47-1 and see what drivel he comes up with.

The PSP has sold about 72 million units to date. I wouldn't be surprised if the Vita clocks in at under half that number. It's unfortunate, as the hardware is great, but people just don't want it.

The problem is, even if Vita were to gain substantial momentum, it won't be until the far future and by then Nintendo will release a new variant of the 3DS with complementing software that will undoubtedly steal any thunder the Vita might have accumulated up to that point.

He just listed Jetpack Joyride as a title that helps sway them...

Yet you have to pay for it on the Vita and it is free on iOS devices... What?

About exactly the problem with Vita

I would buy one for Dragons Crown, but i can play it in HD on my PS3

Plus now windows tablets offer an endless library of older PC games to play with, which is more appealing than most dedicated handhelds for me

What a tacky move. I do wonder how many 'articles' like this are just written by marketing firms.

Why don't you let me fix you some of this Mococoa drink, all natural cocoa beans from the upper slopes of Mount Nicaragua, no artificial sweeteners!

Um, I'm not exactly sure why Jetpack Joyride is listed in that article as a reason to get a Vita. It's just an overpriced, incredibly late minis title. =\

PS+ is a great for the Vita. Especially the Instant Game Collection. And the price drop is definitely nothing but a good thing.

The only issue here is games. Sure it has a few out now, and less than a handful coming out, but nothing to really sell the system. Both ACIII and CoDBLOPS have major issues on the Vita.
