Lock if old.

IDC reports that PS3 sales have reached 77 million this past December ahead of MS X360 at 76 million to become the second best selling home console this gen after the Wii.

IDC also predicts the WiiU to reach 50 million shipments by end of 2016.

The report also highlights that just this past December, Sony's PS3 managed to surpass the number of Xbox 360s shipped worldwide (about 77 million vs. 76 million), despite the PS3 launching a year later. While many hardcore gamers are now waiting for the next-generation systens from Sony and Microsoft, IDC noted that Nintendo will still "find an audience" with Wii U, reaching global bundle shipments of 50 million by year-end 2016.

Not surprising, was going to happen eventually since the gap was less. No one could have predicted this in 2009 though, amazing generation.

These are IDC numbers, so err... it's better to wait for the official ones.

Does it matter anymore?

A few years ago it may have changed the balance of power. Swung exclusives and the brand name power back to Sony and the PlayStation. Seems to me that ship sailed long ago and nextgen will be the dogfight it will be because of it.

I'm sure Sony just had their biggest holiday quarter ever by a significant margin despite being down in every region we have information on.

Seems legit.

Edit-thread will be great to look back on when the actual numbers come out.

Wouldn't be surprised, and I expect this year with its exclusives to help further that.

And I'm surprised we haven't seen bigger price drops/more affordable bundles, I wonder when Sony will do that. I fully expected them to have $200 PS3's this year, wouldn't that, or a heavy bundle at a lower price/smaller HDD sell a lot more? They seem to be doing the opposite buy offering sizeable HDD units that seem to jack the prices up, and I doubt we need bigger HDD's for PS3 at this point in the generation for new consumers

I don't think anyone really saw this coming, not until maybe last year. Great job, Sony. I can't wait to see how the PS4 performs.

Going from 1st place dominance to barely 2nd isnt what I would call good news, but hey they can add this to their PR every NPD.

Congrats for them but the "damage" has already been done. Glad to see it come back after that rough ass launch tho. Will be interesting to see where it all goes for both companies during the first few years.

77 million sold and the best games on the system have sold like utter shit.

The hell guys, this isn't the console that I wanted >_>

PS3 and PlayStation brand surviving the $599 disaster is a real miracle.

Now bring back Ken Kutaragi for PS4 (see PSVita it lack his vision)
