Anyone still using Hamachi or Tunngle should definitely look into this. From my (limited) experience it seems way more stable than either of those and doesn't have a torrent of ad banners everywhere. The interface is very clean and the functionality feels like a more stable version of Steam mostly.
Why would you need a VPN client?
Mostly for older PC games (including many GOG titles) that have LAN support but no online functionality or servers that have long since gone offline. You essentially trick the game into considering your internet connection a local area network. In Evolve, it works by inviting friends to a chat party that gets its own private network automatically. It seems like UPnP works without any issues where Tunngle caused me massive headaches on that front.
Aside from that, it has a Facebook-like wall (that no one seems to use), video recording and screenshots as well as IRC-like chat channels for groups. I made a group for NeoGAF so just search for it if you want to join, should be open to anyone.
It also tracks playtime and such, in case you're playing games that aren't on Steam but still want those kinds of stats.
The main issue with Evolve right now seems to be a general lack of users. There's matchmaking for games where you can find random people to play with, which sounds great on paper, but most games have 0 people searching for games constantly, with Minecraft topping out around 20 people in the queue.
Edit: Group is here btw - https://www.evolvehq.com/groups/neogaf
