CDProjekt discusses Cyberpunk 2077's gameplay and plot

I thought some people might be interested, even if it isn't the most detailed information ever.

Combat:

IGN said:
Cyberpunk hasn’t been as easy to adapt as a video game as you might think. Pen and paper mechanics have been the foundation of many digital RPGs over the years, but they do not translate well into the kind of game that CDP is trying to make. “The game mechanics are totally different on paper, they don’t work in video games because they would be super boring,” Mateusz says.

“The main problem is that the original system is based on dice rolls. When you think about Cyberpunk you think about shooting, action, a lot of explosions. But that doesn’t fit dice rolls in a video game. We want to make it more action-like – there will be a system that lets you use active skills actually in the gameplay in a shooting sequence or something like that, rather than just passive skills like in the books.”

Character Customization:

IGN said:
Character customisation, for instance, was necessarily not an option in Geralt’s world. But in Cyberpunk 2077, it’s self-defined role-playing: your style and personality will have deep and far-reaching effects on the world and how it reacts to you. “We will have several features that allow you to create your [visual] style, and your style will affect gameplay, storyline and relationships between characters,” explains creative director Sebastian Stepien. “Your appearance and your dress will change the behaviour of NPCs, and also the story also in some parts,” Mateusz adds. Style and appearance works together with the personality you create for your character and express in conversation to determine how the world reacts to you.

Dialog System:

IGN said:
“It’s about telling story via what happens, not cutscenes or other features,” Mateusz says. “To do that we need to create a totally new unique dialogue system – we’re doing that right now, it should be awesome.”

Plot Focus:

IGN said:
“The psycho squad is just one of many cool elements in this world," Sebastian explains. “We had several ideas for this short teaser and had to focus on one of them. Augmentations and cyberware is a big subject in the world, and that’s why it’s in the teaser. But it won’t be a game about police hunting cyber-psychos. That’s a sub-plot… The story will be low-level. We are not going to save the world, or even save a city. We are focused on the main character and his problems, or her problems.”

Release Date/Etc:

IGN said:
CD Projekt is taking its time with Cyberpunk 2077. It almost certainly won't be out before 2015 on PC - nothing's confirmed, but it seems likely given The Witcher 3's simultaneous release that it will appear on the next-gen consoles too. The team is still playing around and experimenting with ideas, throwing things like multiplayer and prototyping. But the vision is firmly in place, and you get the impression that it has been since before CDP even started work on this project. If I were Mike Pondsmith, I'd have confidence in them too.

If they didn't have The Witcher 3 coming out next year I would be pretty pissed that they revealed Cyberpunk so early.

I really like everything I hear about this project. The low level story is especially appealing to me. It allows all of the players' interactions to have more meaning. If you're not saving the world, stopping and helping someone do a menial task makes more sense and is a much more significant to the character overall.

Sounds good so far. Can't wait until we see more. But that's probably going to be awhile. Hell we haven't even seen much of Witcher 3 and that's early next year right?

I have always asked for this...

CD Projekt >>> Bioware/Bethesda/Capcom/Obsidian

These guys can actually pull off everything they dream of and consistently deliver.
Please make a Vampire: The Masquerade RPG next, I don't want to play EVE with Vampires!

Hopefully Eidos Montreal picks up some basic pointers for Deus Ex 4. HR was great, they can make it better.

why announce a game that they know wouldn't arrive for 3 years at the earliest

Not taking into account possible delays. Hate games being announced way too early, happened alot at the start of current gen and looks like it might happen next gen aswel.

I kind of assumed it would play like Mass Effect given they first hired for the game with a picture of a handgun.

I will throw this post in your face when you are gushing about how great the game is when you play it in 2015.

in interviews earlier they said they will try to do proper Pnp experience but some mechanics need ti be tweeked because some mechanics would not work without gm like it it should

but now it looks like it will be pew pew game

Man why bother even talking about it, then, at this point.

well CDProjekt is also showing really ugly early Witcher 3 screens that turned some fans off,I guess they just want to keep in touch with their fans?

but I think They should've kept Cyperpunk unannounced till they have something good to show or till near the release of Witcher 3, this will end like Versus XIII or TLG where people stop caring about the game completely in few years of nothing or have really high expectations

"We are focused on the main character and his problems, or her problems.”

Is that sort of the first time they've more concretely mentioned that the player can select the main character's gender? From most of the other interviews they always dance around whether the main character will have a fixed gender or not.

It will be like the Witcher with Guns instead of Swords. That's more than we can ask for.

I imagine they were thinking about the like... non-combat elements with that statement, but I can easily see why people would infer that as a combat statement as well.

It's just statements like this that also made me assume it was a shooter RPG:

CD Projekt CEO was interviewed by TVN CNBC and had few interesting things to say:

- Cyberpunk 2077 will have a much bigger marketing budget than any of their previous games, and they're confident it will be a commercial success comparable to the "big games". The most important market for C2077 will be NA.

That along with them switching from an isometric turn-esque game with The Witcher 1 to over the shoulder with The Witcher:EE to action rpg gameplay with QTEs with The Witcher 2.

2015?

This just makes me weep. Interesting information though. The wait won't be so bad, with all the distractions of the next gen consoles.

I get the impression they saw interest in gender choice and this is a reflection of that.

Yes.. i am so fed up with this save everyone crap in every single game. more low level stuff is good. Some quests simply don't work with the must save the world/universe stuff.

It was a big problem i had with swtor where they npc said.. yo Sith LORD go kill me some rats..

I'm going to be hated for this, but I hope it is a shooter.
When most of the weapons are guns, the best way to play is aiming with the mouse.

Dammit, the wait will be excruciating. I'll have to finally get into the Witcher series. Should I play the first, or can I just jump into Witcher 2?

You'll appreciate the Witcher series so much more if you play the first. I know many people say the beginning act is slow, but it's worth sticking around to the end.

my most anticipated game. trying not to get too hyped about it, but everything they say about it sounds good. if they get it out in 2015 then the wait won't be so bad for me. but i'll keep my expectations to 2016.
