The film

It's a crowfunded documentary about the game development in Spain, with a strong focus in our indie companies since most of our studios are really small teams.

They visited our offices during the recent weeks to chat about a broad amount of topics like how the studios were created, the current and future status of the gaming industry, piracy, department specific questions, etc.

It features a lot of types of games, from free browser games to console games published by 1st parties, but also small handheld games, phone/tablet games, Steam games, social games, etc.

The interviewed people there ranges from students who are working on their first game to people with 20+ years of experience who is in the industry since the 8 bits gen and worked for major publishers.

It's also work in Progress / not 100% confirmed Gonzo Suarez, who is a glory from the 8 bits Spanish age (Opera Soft, Zafiro, Pyro Studios, Arvirago), and was in charge of Commandos, a really popular games like the series for PC. He also has a key role in the Spanish Academy of the Interactive Sciences and Arts and in DEV (an institution of Spanish game companies).

Sadly, as of now is difficult to see there Mercury Steam and Locomalito, because has been difficult to contact them.

Seems that the list of people to appear in the documentary still isn't closed, so if you can help these humble guys by engaging these people or other interesting studios to contact the documentary guys they'd welcome any help.

No Mercury Steam? I know they focus on indies, but I thought that such a high profile studio would be mentioned somewhere. But aside from that, very good companies. Glad this is being made.

Not sure, but as of now Mercury Steam, Novarama, Digital Legends, Locomalito or the Spanish studios of Ubisoft and Gameloft aren't listed in their sites.
Who knows, maybe they are waiting to reveal them as a surprise for the future, or for a 2nd part of the documentary. Or maybe they can't film in their offices due to NDAs with their publishers, I don't know.

I would buy a documentary about the 80's game development in Spain.
Same here.

Why focus on Spain? Why not talk about game development all around the world?
Just kidding. GTFO thread had this argument.

Not to sound like a jerk, but I found stupid that a movie named insert coin has nothing to do with arcade games

It's like they searched for a random generic name for media related with gaming and chosen insert coin instead of press start

Still, the movie seems interesting, it's always cool to know about indie developers, and more from a country which is not as traditionalist as USA or Japan

The other thing that I hate, is that for been an Spanish Studios there had their names in the english language, but well, that's more of a common thing that happens everywhere, so meh, leave me alone on that one

Well, for the old school gamers here in Spain arcades are really close to our hearts, and some of the people who appears in the documentary previously worked developing arcade games.

As I remember in my studio (Digital Chocolate) there are at least 3 or 4 guys who worked there. One of them, Miguel Angel (coder interviewed in the documentary) worked in Gaelco (World Rally, Thunder Hoop, Radical Bikers, Speed Up...) and other companies before.

Some of their questions were related to our personal careers and memories as games so I assume the arcades will be mentioned several times.

wow, that's really interesting, since you put in that way, I could see the name selection, still not of my flavour, but well, it's irrelevant

Jaleco? that's cool, those dudes seemed to be really cool in general, I still love that story that they gave the source code to mamedev to dump one of their games

Gaelco. It isn't the same than Jaleco. Check MAME, they had several awesome arcade games: http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaelco_Multimedia

Sadly Gaelco closed years ago. Before that, they did some great J2ME games for mobile phones too. And before developing arcade games, some of these guys developed great games for 8 bit computers in companies like Zigurat or Made in Spain : http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zigurat_(empresa)

I would buy a documentary about the 80's game development in Spain.
Now I remember that the Crocodile guys were veterans from the 8 bits, they did some games during the 80's.
At least in our studio there are people from Bit Managers and worked on Game Boy games, and others did Amiga and MSX stuff.
So I assume that people from other studios will be old school veterans too, who make sure will talk about the '80s or early '90 when interviewed.

So is this in Spanish as well? I can't view the YouTube trailer on my phone for some reason, but hopefully it will have subtitles as well if it is?

Wow, that's great that there's so many indie Spanish studios. I wasn't aware of most of them, even though I'm Spanish myself.

However, how is it even possible that Locomalito isn't included in this? Is it because he releases his games for free?

Hi! Just updated the list in the OP with names like CoderChild or Deconstructeam, the creators of the new and brilliant 'The Gods Will Be Watching' which was made for the recent Ludum Dare.

Sorry for the double post, but I think it's important :

Just updated the OP, seems that people like Lab Cave, Stage Clear, Novarama, Digital Legends and Gonzo Suarez (a Spanish game dev glory : Goody, Commandos, etc) are in, even if some of them aren't 100% confirmed or are working on it.

Sadly seems that they couldn't contact Mercury Steam and Locomalito, but will try it again.

Seems that the list of people to appear in the documentary still isn't closed, so if you can help the humble guys by engaging these people to contact the documentary guys (you have the related links in the OP) they'd welcome any help.
