It’s a surge in sales of Microsoft’s ‘Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition’ (climbing from No2 to No1 / +74%) that keeps Nintendo from claiming a first Wii U No1 on the All Formats Chart.

Since launch in week 48, 2012 we’ve had 43 Wii U titles (5 from Nintendo). This week Nintendo add 2 more first party titles, the first being ‘Pikmin 3’, which debuts at No2 (Pikmin 2 debuted way back in week 41, 2004 on Gamecube at No32 on the All Formats Chart, subsequently released on Wii in week 17, 2009). The other Nintendo release this week is also for Wii U, ‘New Super Luigi U’ at No 13 on the All Formats Top 40.

Sony’s PS3 ‘The Last of Us’ (-16%) has to content itself with 6 straight weeks at the Top, dropping down to No3 this week. Aside from the Nintendo Wii U releases there’s little else to report, with last week’s big new release ‘Dynasty Warriors 8’ (-48%) from Tecmo Koei dropping from No5 to No18 and Ubisoft’s ‘The Smurfs 2’ (+213%) making an appearance at No25, having been released the previous week.

It's simple isn't it. Nintendo releases games, people will buy the games and the console to play them on.

Why Nintendo thought an 8-9 month drought in the first year of a console's life was a good idea is anyone's guess. Can only move up from here though. That said, a long wait until TW101, and then another long wait until all the big guns finally arrive.

Pikmin 3 probably sold well on the eShop with the -30% promotion (it occupies the 2nd position on the Recent Bestsellers [only behind EarthBound], 18th position on the All Time Wii U Charts for all Software, and the 11th position on the All Time Charts for Wii U Only Software)

Wish Nintendo would release actual numbers for it...

Do UK figures include digital copies sold by retail? Game broke the street date by about 3 days, so I think a decent amount of sales were for the eShop version from them.

That's a very encouraging start for Pikmin 3 and wii u in general. Finally a bit of good news for Shibata on the Wii u side of things.

Why the boost for Minecraft 360?

I expected Pikmin 3 to easily claim No.1, but then I realised a lot of people probably bought it digitally with GAME's street break offer, and I reckon New Super Luigi probably forced people to pick one or the other, too. Otherwise I think Pikmin 3 would have taken No.1 with no trouble.

I think Minecraft went on sale for £12 which explains the 74% increase in sales over the previous week, despite being out for a few weeks.

Wonder where Pikmin 3 is. Closer to the 7k mark or the 10k one. Would have thought more WiiU owners would have been battering down the gameshop doors to justify their purchase this whole year long.

Minecraft being such an insane success still feels weird to me since I was in on that early Beta push out. It really found its audience. Thats also the kind of phenomenon Nintendo are going to need to produce to keep their home console business relevant.

Not every week you see 4 of the top 6 titles being Nintendo games in the UK.

I think a lot of people were taking advantage of digital discount on Game.com to get Pikmin 3 early, or were buying it on the eshop to get the 30% discount on W101 as well.

Yes it will. No Nintendoland means no-one bought Wii Us for pikmin, so it's only the small number of people who already own the console buying it, meaning numbers will fall off a cliff.

Is this considered a good result for Pikmin?

It seemingly did nothing much for Wii U hardware.

I would not consider it that good for Pikmin I think most us where expected number 1 spot due to Last Of Us being 6 weeks old and Pikmin a new title instead it got 2nd and will drop fast probably next week

Yeah, I'm actually surprised it made it so far up the charts to begin with.

I mean, it's a marvelous experience, tons of fun and charm, and a really, really beautiful game, but even as a big fan I can easily see how niche it is. It's hard to explain to people what kind of a game it is and the appeal of it. Which is sad. The world would be a better place if more people played this game... (I hope you're playing Dave, if not it's only fair you buy it based on my recommendations as I bought ZombiU because of you)

Even here on GAF the OT isn't exactly exploding (though the game isn't out in NA yet).

Minecraft got a massive price promotion and it's sales increased 74% over last week's. Were it not on sale for £12, Pikmin 3 would probably have been 1st. Not saying that looking at the rankings this way makes Pikmin 3 a success or failure.
