How Bungie is using the Destiny alpha to polish its sci-fi epic:

Key quotes:

Whilst the alpha was the first opportunity for a lot of players to get into Destiny early, it won’t be your only chance before launch, “The beta test later in the year will contain different content – there will be a difference but what’s key is that every bit of information we’re gathering and the tweaks and adjustments we’re making will carry through to the Beta test"

As for how the wider development of Destiny is going, it seems to be an exciting time over at Bungie. “What’s really cool for me personally as an environment artist is that the game is already looking better than what people are playing in the alpha, which is really cool. It’s like, hey guess what? This is only going to get better.”

The current build already looks better than what we are playing in the Alpha and the Beta will feature more new content for us to play. :)

This is certainly shaping up to be my GOTY. The alpha was some of the best gaming I've had all year, and hearing that the beta is going to have different content is awesome.

Nice. How would I go about getting a beta code without physical pre-order (Xbox One) ? No digital pre-ordering implemented yet. :/

Amazon doesn't charge you until the game ships.

So you could pre-order a copy, get beta code in your email, then cancel the pre-order.

I liked the Alpha a lot.I didn't like the heavy ammo system all that much though. Hard to get the ammo and if you die you lose it.

After the alpha, the Destiny beta is my most anticipated game of the summer
Full game is one of my most anticipated ever

If it's only getting better I can't wait to see what's next.

It'a crazy how much Destiny feels like Halo during the FPS part. My muscle memory is practically 1:1.

I had an especially trippy deja vu moment when getting attacked by a ghost-like vehicle and jumped while lobbing a grenade.

It's Halo with MMO bits.

I like it.

You mean that this Alpha is actually an Alpha and not simply being put out there for marketing purposes where they are changing very little to the game as a result of it?

Impressive.

This is slightly off-topic, but regarding the "10-year vision for Destiny"— is that meant to suggest the product launching this September will be supported via patches and DLCs for 10 years a la MMOs, or is it a reference to Acti's commitment to the IP and how through (annual? bi-annual?) releases building up on this year's foundation will be around for 10-years?

I don't think this is known, but I would expect the former. If the latter, perhaps 3 games + DLC over a ten year span.

Exactly, I'm surprised a beta or alpha is actually having an impact on the game and will noticeably improve. Mostly every single one I've played in the last two years or so was exclusively used to market the game.

If there is a bug or some tweak request, how would one tell Bungie about it, or are the "pre-order bought beta testers" just stress testing servers?

There is going to be many sequels and much dlc.

Pre-order on Amazon then cancel once you get the code?

I don't see any other way

Amazon worked for the PS4 version. Will probably cancel the preorder actually, but Ive already got the code.

Any hassle canceling a pre-order from Amazon? Do I just press a button?

Honestly, from what I've played so far, everything felt a little bit uninspired.

The game controls like Halo, it looks like Halo and it somehow it plays like Halo. This is all just fine, but then that ADS just feels so alien in this game ... It just does not feel right.

The Alpha definitely killed my hype for the game. It felt solid. That's it.

Can't wait to get right back into it with the beta. I'm honestly in love with that game. It's going to be a painful wait between now and the beta, and then that and the full game.

I really hope the beta takes place on Mars or another planet instead of having us go through Russia again.

You mean letting gamers play your game early is to help developers tweak the game and polish it up for release and isn't simply a benevolent gesture towards gamers by allowing them to get a free demo of the game prior to release?

awesome, can't wait to play the finished product after spending some time with the Alpha over the weekend. Game went from most likely buy to day one!

Well I preordered digitally on psn store. Bungie.net seems to imply the beta will be available that way too.

Certainly don't plan to change the disk out long term. Need me some beta though.

No key sent yet.

Mentioned in another thread, but I really hope they improve the AA solution in this game.

The FXAA is awful and destroys the image quality of an an otherwise nice looking game from an artistic point of view, even if it doesn't feature many graphical bells and whistles.

They mentioned the Xbox One version would be getting 1080p....so it stands to reason that hopefully further optimization on PS4 will allow them to keep 1080p but dramatically improve the IQ.

I feel so bad that I didn't really cared about this game at all until I played the alpha, good for them they gave us a taste and we could see how good it plays and all the potential in there.

Activision needs to make a push for Destiny and market the game better.

With all that said, this is Day 1 for me.

I wish it ran at 60 fps :(

Or this. There's really no reason why it shouldn't on PS4 -- I think many would be willing to even accept a resolution downgrade to achieve 60 fps. Battlefield is much more impressive technically for instance.

Seems like Bungie is dead-set on 1080p 30 for next-gen consoles though, sadly.
