The fifth and final season of Boardwalk Empire premieres on Sunday, September 7th on HBO. In the first four seasons, Boardwalk Empire has developed into a very good show and delivered a highly entertaining narrative about prohibition-era America. The show boasts a talented writing team, a great ensemble cast, and a production crew/budget that puts together one of the better looking shows on TV. The fifth season will consist of eight episodes.

HBO said:
From Terence Winter, Emmy Award-winning writer of 'The Sopranos,' and Academy Award-winning director Martin Scorsese, 'Boardwalk Empire' is set in Atlantic City during Prohibition, when the sale of alcohol became illegal throughout the United States.

It was a time of change: women gained the right to vote, broadcast radio spread the news, young people ruled the world, and criminals became rich trafficking in illegal alcohol.

On the beach in southern New Jersey sits Atlantic City, a spectacular resort known as "The World's Playground," a place where rules don't apply. Massive hotels line its famous Boardwalk, along with nightclubs, amusement piers and entertainment to rival Broadway. For a few dollars, a working man can get away and live like a king -- legally or illegally.

The undisputed ruler of Atlantic City is Enoch "Nucky" Thompson, (Steve Buscemi) a political fixer and backroom dealer who is equal parts politician and gangster and equally comfortable in either role. Because of its strategic location on the seaboard, the town is a hub of activity for rum-runners, minutes from Philadelphia, hours from New York City and a day's drive from Chicago. And Nucky Thompson takes full advantage.

Nucky has carved out a niche for himself as the man to see for any illegal alcohol. He is an equal opportunity gangster, doing business with Lucky Luciano (Vincent Piazza), Al Capone (Stephen Graham), and Johnny Torrio (Greg Antonacci). He has survived all comers.

The show also stars Michael Kenneth Williams ('The Wire') as Chalky White, the leader of the city's African-American community, now in retreat; Michael Shannon as former federal agent Nelson Van Alden; Gretchen Mol as Gillian Darmody, an opportunistic ex-showgirl; Jeffrey Wright as Dr. Valentin Narcisse, a Harlem-based challenger to Nucky; Shea Whigham as Nucky's brother Eli; and Kelly Macdonald as Margaret, Nucky's estranged wife.

Created by Terence Winter, 'Boardwalk Empire' is executive produced by Terence Winter, Martin Scorsese, Tim Van Patten, Howard Korder, Gene Kelly, Stephen Levinson and Mark Wahlberg. Joe Iberti, Allen Coulter and Rick Yorn are producers.

'Boardwalk Empire' is inspired by the non-fiction book "Boardwalk Empire: The Birth, High Times and Corruption of Atlantic City" by Nelson Johnson.

Episodes
Episode 5.1: “Golden Days for Boys and Girls”
Debut: SUNDAY, SEPT. 7 (9:00-10:00 p.m. ET/PT)
Nucky (Steve Buscemi) is awash in memories from pier-boy days growing up in 1884 Atlantic City, when the young Nucky (Nolan Lyons) caught the eye of the Commodore (John Elllison Conlee). In 1931 Cuba, Nucky joins Sally Wheet (Patricia Arquette) and, with a U.S. Senator in tow, forges ties with Bacardi Rum in hopes of Prohibition’s repeal in the U.S. Working on Wall Street, Margaret (Kelly Macdonald) finds herself in the hot seat when her boss, facing an internal investigation, decides his own future. Down but never out, Chalky (Michael Kenneth Williams) seizes an opportunity to extricate himself from a difficult situation. In New York, Lucky Luciano (Vincent Piazza) sets in motion a bold plan that reverberates all the way to Nucky in Cuba.

absolutely love this show. gonna need to watch that last season recap though, heh, only remember a few key events, my memory is crap. can't wait for it to start.

Really looking forward to seeing this out.

I do hope the
flashbacks won't be too intrusive, though. Going by the episode descriptions, it seems they'll make up a big part of the season.

absolutely love this show. gonna need to wiki what happened last season though, heh, only remember a few key events. can't wait for it to start.

There's a YouTube link to a 9 minute recap in the OP.

Didnt like the fourth season at all. But since its the last season I guess ill watch it. No tin man to root for so I have no horse in this race.

Honestly one of the most underrated shows of all time. One of the slowest too (especially the first season) but I don't see that has a bad thing. Season 4 was probably the best one yet so I think 5 will fantastic.

Last season was the best yet. For all characters involved

When Eli's son caught nucky with a gun to his fathers head. Hoooo, especially when Eli called nucky out on being a sad man without a family

Shit got me legit shook

Is it confirmed we won't be seeing Capone at all? :(

Capone is in this season. People are lamenting that we won't see any more Stephen Graham as Capone once the series is over.

It will never happen but a Capone spin off would be great as the Chicago storyline has easily become the most interesting aspect of the show.

Now they just need to announce the Eddie Cantor biographical miniseries starring Stephen DeRosa, and I'm good.

Just 8 episodes? Well that's a kick in the teeth. Wish HBO would've given this show more of a chance, it deserved better than this.

Really looking forward to this. I love this show so much. It's a shame it's not around for much longer, but I suppose it's for the best.

This show could have gone on for many more seasons with the current main cast dying off/leaving and the younger generation replacing them.

Such a missed opportunity. What a waste.

Come on man, don't talk like that. I would expect that reaction if it was canned for the second season, not the fith.

I decided to watch this show about a month ago; ended up marathoning all four seasons lol. Great show, but season four was the weakest by far. Looking forward to the final season.

Honestly, I'm glad it's wrapping up.

The show had beautiful production values, talented actors, wonderful direction, but just couldn't make it all add up to more than the sum of its parts.

There are no episodes that I'd just watch any old time like I'd do with some other top-tier HBO shows.

It's not to say they didn't try, but I never felt that I was transported back to an era.
