I was expecting a big set piece for the finale, but they hit the right plot notes and am glad Homelander got to be humiliated on national TV. Would have preferred he live out his life without powers, but they couldn't risk that he might get them back.

Don't get the disappointment. The show pretty much completely collapsed after season 1. There were exactly 3 entertaining characters: Butcher, Homelader and later Soldier Boy which all were carried by their actors.
Everything else, the other actors, the writing, the visuals etc. were just complete and utter garbage.

The Deep had some awful writing too but Chase carried it.
I didn't hate the finale but I didn't like it either. After a while The Deep shtick got super old for me and as you said that's due to the writing. I felt that character was constantly being used as a punching bag. He literally had no character development other than constantly being humilated. At first I was fine with it due to what he did to Starlight in the very first episode but now I just kind of rolled my eyes whenever he showed up since it's super obvious how the writers feel about the character just through the writing

I don't get this supe power level shit. All this time Homelander was just another random supe then? Slightly more powerful than most others, sure, but several times in the whole show he is getting his ass kicked and is unable to actually kill anyone when they try. He can't even kill any of the other supes attacking him when he is slightly outnumbered. How many "A-List" supes he managed to kill 1v1 in the whole show anyway? Black Noir who didn't see it coming and A-Train after he tripped? Why couldn't he just kill Kimiko? Butcher? Soldier Boy? In the whole show he is killing regular people and maybe the random D-lister.
So what exactly was so special about him? First season sold him as a massive threat but after that this was quickly dissipated. They even let him go at one point in an earlier episode, when they could easily make him lost his powers just like in the final episode. Again, he was attacked by a bunch of other supes and couldn't hurt nobody. So why couldn't they jsut do that instead of viruses and other bullshit? Just gather a bunch of other strong supes, meet him in an alley and beat the shit out of him.
They made Homelander a joke after S1 and we were supposed to give a shit about everyone else supposedly fear him?

That's just the level of the modern writers. And keep in mind that the Deep humiliation and such made some people felt really cool and smart about themselves even when everybody got bored. Kudos to actorsr playing this properly till the very end.
It is the same situation as Woker 2. At least the Homelander was not raped at the end. Was probably hard to restrain themselves for modern hollywood writers.
But will people even tune in to Vough Rising now? The Boys show was getting less and less popular, getting worse and worse reputation and people somehow will go to a new show? Doubt. It is like D&D with GOT situation where they dropped the show for their Star Wars contracts and those never materialized while D&D became a laughing stock without job.

Well atleast I will for the first 3 episodes. But people keep telling me final season budget cuts is a common thing that Amazon does. Boys writer wrote around that and did a shitty job knowingly.
I honestly think more people than GenV S1 will tune to watch Vought Rising, which is enough for Amazon to greenlit Season 2. People are passionate about this franchise.

I stopped watching around season 3 when I realized that I was basically watching the same thing over and over. And the season ending finales were so lowbudget that it became ridiculous for a superhero show. Reading about the later seasons and the direction the show took I feel like I haven't missed anything of worth.

Powerscaling is non existent in this show. The characters are as powerful as the writers need them to be for the scene.
Invincible has the same problem.
Boils down to lazy writing.

Viltrumites have superman power level in one scene and are beaten by random thugs in another - ugh....
The Boys ending was bad, just like the whole S5. Show was amazing in 2019 (when there was not much political agenda and much better writing), but it went downhill from that. No epic fights or anything.

The final episode is a bit rubbish but it ties up all the loose ends in the second-to-last episode so you can easily overlook it.

Thought it was bad and good.
The good was after he lost his powers, that scene was pretty great, though letting him live felt like it would've been an even worse fate for him.
The bad was pretty much everything else, the fight in the oval office was completely ridiculous, if butcher was that strong, a team of him, starlight and a-train would've overwhelmed him, this entire season pretty much had completely weird power scaling; heck the scene before he apparently flies into space and back in like a second, and before we saw him keep up with a-train, but somehow he can't dodge butcher or fly away because butcher now has speedster level reactions or whatever...
Add in marie and cate and they would've completely destroyed homelander with little effort. Speaking of marie and cate, what a complete waste of building them up with gen v only for them to literally do nothing, heck cate didn't show up at all.
Deep's death was fine, but it was completely expected, so having starlight just fly him to water immediately felt lazy.
Oh Father's death made no sense, yeah they set it up with the ball being special or whatever, but it was still just MM holding it, would've just flown off because MM has no super strength.
The whole V1 plot went nowhere, heck the whole virus plot went nowhere; would've preferred if it was released and supes just because much more rare or mutated with some truly messed up powers that turn the public against them (like mutants from marvel).
And everyone just forgot about soldier boy, who's just chilling in homelander's apartment, while MM decides to get married and live happily ever after.
Oh and it was doubly jarring to see the recap having normal face starlight, why even include that lol; her conversation with marie was so distracting because it was basically marie talking to an animatronic that was trying its hardest to emote.
Overall very weak season, only saved by being fun here and there and homelander's unhinged begging at the end.

For me the ABSOLUTE MOST UNBELIEVABLE part is Hughie passing up a CUSH government job with that sweet sweet health care and benefits when he has a baby on the way. Dude, you live in AMERICA, you can't cutting it running a discount electronics store with an unemployed wife!!

Seems like writers and head creatives get senioritis/retirement mindset when they know their show is going to be canceled. Not to discount the reality of budget cuts, season length shortening, etc.
My vibe is that shows where the creatives don't know they're going to be canceled (or otherwise end *cough* Game of Thrones) power through and finish stronger.

Yes, but for a different reason mostly because it drags too much. By season 10 you saw everything that could ever see. Season 15 you're tired... It's kinda ironic having Carry On My Wayward Son as a theme song and taking too long to move on
I actually thought that was because Eric Kripke wanted money, but since The Boys and Gen V also struggled with ego and too much fillers, it's very clear that he doesn't know when and how to finish
While I agree with you for the most part, these guys walked into MAJOR $$$ at Netflix. They delivered a reasonably good low budget heavy metal film and then Three Body Problem, which isn't great but at least tries to condense the stellar, but very elaborate and culturally divergent, source material.
On a side note, Benioff is married to Amanda Peet, so he is ALWAYS winning
And Sage, the worst written character EVER, loses her 'powers' and surprise, nothing changes
They could at least had her mention that she had set up an elaborate super-trust of financial systems to provide her a life of luxury, now that her "busy head" is quiet.
