Minecraft enters the next generation with the release of Minecraft: Xbox One Edition (ESRB rating E10+), available Friday, Sept. 5 for download in the Xbox Store. Owners of Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition can upgrade for just $4.99* USD, or new players can download the full game for $19.99 USD. All downloadable content players have purchased for the Xbox 360 Edition is available free for re-download on Xbox One.

With worlds up to 36 times larger than on Xbox 360, now there’s an even bigger canvas to create on. Transfer your favorite Xbox 360 worlds and content to the Xbox One Edition so you won’t lose your creations. Join a community of 13-million-plus Minecraft fans on Xbox Live that are continually laying down imaginative creations. And, with the widest range of downloadable content on console, you’ll never run out of new worlds to explore with four player split-screen on one console or up to eight players over Xbox Live.**

Xbox is about giving players a choice - even in how you buy your game. Starting Friday, players can purchase and download the Minecraft: Xbox One Edition upgrade or full game from the Xbox Store with either a credit card or an Xbox Gift Card purchased at retail. Later this month, select retailers will sell the full game Digital Download Code and the full game packaged disc will be on retail store shelves globally this holiday, just in time for gift giving.

Whether you’re a veteran Minecraft player continuing your journey or a new member of the community, you’ll be able to kick off your weekend with Minecraft: Xbox One Edition.

*To qualify for the $4.99 USD upgrade offer, players must own the retail disc or digital version of Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition and connect to Xbox Live with their account. For more information, visit xbox.com/en-US/games/minecraft-xbox-one-edition

**Xbox Live Gold membership required, sold separately.

It's about time. Wasn't it originally supposed to be out in the spring?

Never been particularly interested in this title. I understand it's draw, but it doesn't grab me.
Sounds like people could go to Gamestop, buy / return a copy after "upgrading."

Surface of Me

I'm not an NPC. And neither are we.
Read title as Microsoft Xbox One and got confused.

Minecraft cant be stopped, wonder how many sales it will have in the end.

Any news on the PS4/Vita versions? The PS4 version showed up today on the web store but it just sent you to a broken link if you clicked on it.

You will probably need to insert the disc to play if you upgrade with a physical copy.

No the Xbox One can't read 360 discs. Not even for verification.

You just need the game on your gamer tag. If you have it you are eligible for the upgrade.

I'll grab it since it's only $5 but I'm still disappointed in the lack of world hosting support. Hopefully they come up with a solution sooner rather than later.

I need to see if I played this with my gametag at all. If not, gotta see if any of my friends have it. And have a 360, cuz I don't have one. lol. I bought the PS3 version though so I'm eligible for the discount on PS4.

Good, maybe then with both current gen editions done and dusted they can actually focus on the Vita version that's clearly been given the red-headed stepchild treatment.

It's crazy that I'm considering upgrading to this, cross-buying PS3/Vita, and upgrading to PS4.

I also own it for PC/Mac.

Not sure if that's a problem I should look in to or happily accept these notions.

I don't get why people are like "the ps4 one has no date" didn't they say it will be live in Europe tommrow this morning?

So the big improvement is that worlds are now 6000x6000 blocks instead of 1000x1000? That's shameful. It was announced to feature the same unlimited worlds as on PC. Exploration is half the fun in Minecraft. You can only walk 800 blocks in the Nether on Xbox One before reaching invisible borders.

I give much props to Mojang for doing the upgrade at $4.99. They can easily sell this for $14.99.

Seriously. I wasn't going to bother but 5 bucks? Why not.

Its not going to help the growing fight for the ps4 in the family though. Between my wife and I with diablo, my son with PvZ and Mine craft and soon adding destiny, peggle 2 and drive club to the mix, it might be time for a second console.

Is there a reason for this?

Same here. I got it on 360 and wasn't going to bother with it again but for 5 bucks, why not? I'll upgrade for the heck of it.

Yes, hopefully the discount works right away and with no hassle.

Oh it will work. Halo Spartan Assault had this discount thing too if you bought it before on W8.

It will show the original price with a strike through it and show the discounted price underneath it.

Save size file limitations. They get synced to the cloud every couple minutes. Can't have a save 1gb+ in that case.

There are also no servers to rent so everything needs to be saved locally.

Then I hope they made the map size limited depending on chunks. Just please no square around 0,0.

They should be able to work around cloud limitations by only syncing new chunks/changed old chunks and doing a filecheck.

Yeah it was never announced to have infinite worlds.

Ah yes, the cloud.

Wonderful.

I'd trade uploads for infinite space and/or local saves to system that can be uploaded at the end of a session. Shit happens and I'd prefer the best experience over a failsafe feature I may or may not need.

Does not affect my outlook of the game though. Might help me keep focused with the smaller area.
