One of my co-workers just got fired today by Corporate no real reason at all.

We were having a walk through by corporate, (i.e. Regional and District). My co-worker is a hard working fellow, a very hard working fellow. He's a bit on the scruffy side but, a good model associate. He always said the DM had it in for him, that whenever the DM did a store visit he would never greet him and would frown at him whenever he looked at him.

The DM, and Store Manager are walking by breakroom (we were both on lunch) when Drake (the associate in question) greets him. The DM stops looks at the Store Manager, and then they walk off to the office. A few minutes later, "drake to the ad office. drake to the ad office". Drake goes to the ad office comes back about 30 minutes later with no badge and in tears.

"Got fired. The DM said I was a poor representation of the store, and my performance wasn't up to their standards. Terminated with prejudice so I can never be employed with Walmart again".

Insane.

Yikes. No specific reasons? And right before Christmas too. That sucks. It's unfortunate that retail management can be like that.

Employed at Walmart. Tell that dude he can only go up from here.
Hopefully he lands at a Costco, gets a decent wage and never thinks about that shitty Wal-Mart again.

He started at the bottom and looks like he is still there.

One thing I learned about the working world it isn't how hard you work it's about kissing up to management. I feel sorry for the guy hope he can find something else soon.

Retail management give absolutely zero damns about the welfare of the employees. I hope that guy can bounce back and hopefully apply for unemployment.

The security guard in my old store for fired immediately when the DM came in because he was checking his phone. Mind you, the store was absolutely dead.

Retail is just an awful environment.

Costco corporate is no better then Wally worlds. When corporate wants you gone, you're gone no matter what. Management protested, they got reprimanded.

How does corporate have time to have all of these grudges against random peons? I worked retail for a few summers when I was younger, and I don't think I ever even met a DM. I don't even think DMs are considered corporate.

Have you ever worked at Costco?

Also, judging by your history with threads like this, I feel like there's more to the story that we're missing.

Maybe. I will never know. I'm not privy to information like this. I'm taking his word for it, and from what I have seen him do.

Grudges? he didn't even know the guys name. I see the DM all the frigging time now.

Jesus. Fucking hate retail. It's disgusting.

You're not wrong but that is a poor example.

Seriously though.

He didn't get walked out? That's usually the case when someone gets fired. He can open door it either way.

Actually, there may be a reason why I didn't meet the DM at one of my jobs. I was set to unload the truck that day (as in I'd be in the back of the store, out of the sight of customers, unloading heavy boxes), and I was sent home to change into dress shoes because of a DM visit that day. I didn't go back. That was my last day ever working retail, haha.

I don't think so. Guy is making 6 figures at the bare minimum. IIRC, District makes like 200k a year. Don't think he's too concerned.

Still doesn't mean he wasn't jealous on some level of your co-worker's pleasant down-to-earth-ness or some other quality. Or, I think hatred isn't even always just rooted in jealousy but of course can also come from fear -- > hatred of the unknown or unfamiliar that makes people uncomfortable. Anyway, I'm sorry to hear it and I hope your co-worker will be able to get a job where he's treated better soon.

Still wondering what scruffy means. If he says he was a poor representation of the company, does that mean he walked around looking like The Dude from The Big Lebowski?

You're not wrong but that is a poor example.

I should have clarified. It was back when I worked in a cellphone store. We all had our phones out.

I know its not exactly a similar situation but I just remember it as being one of the most aggreious situations I encountered.

If he wants to help highlight how Wal-Mart corporate asks when a spotlight isn't shining on them, have him contact Our Wal-Mart to tell his story.

You're in the US right?

Here in Canada Walmart actually needs a reason to fire you (if you've been employed for more than X years), and even then you get like 9 warnings before getting fired.

Damn, if the firing really was for personal "i don't like you" reasons, that's stupid, especially in a job like retail.

I remember when I worked at Wal-Mart the summer after high school before I started college. Manager told me as I was quitting I couldn't do any better than working at Wal-Mart. Clowned his ass when I told him I was on full scholarship to pretty good school. All in all...fuck Wal-Mart and their creepy cult like atmosphere where the management pretends like you're all some happy family but doesn't give two shits about you.

Retail was the seventh circle of hell when I work it. Feel so sorry for anyone stuck in it. It's too bad really. Retail and poorly paid Manual work is the only thing for high school (or worse) graduates. The days when Manufacturing was paying 30$ an hour for putting a door on a car really seems bizarre in comparison.

He needs to call home office. That's just ridiculous. We have a asshole DM over us now as well. Our management team has been changing a lot lately because of him. (Fellow Walmart associate btw)

Edit: For those that don't know; Walmart is an at-will employer, meaning they can fire you at any time without reason. (Although they usually give one.) When hired in all employees sign a contract saying that the understand this.

It must depend on where you are because I honestly have no idea what you need to do to get fired from Walmart besides stealing. I worked there for two years and I saw a few guys repeatedly sleep on the job sometimes for hours at a time, or do stupid (dangerous even) stuff and get away with it until they quit by themselves.

It certainly looks like your friend was just unlucky that your store's DM is a complete asshole. Sorry for him, hopefully he'll get a better job elsewhere!

A good friend of mine was fired on the 23rd of December a few years back. Retail. It sucked but he raised hell with the management to force them into giving him his final paycheck the same day instead of dragging it out. Ended up with an extra few grand on the 24th which was a bit of holiday cheer.

Somehow I don't think that the home office is going to side with Annonymous Associate #583957 over a DM.

Well maybe pay people more and they wont be "scruffy".

Tired of corporate people in this country.

I work in city government and am pretty scruffy myself. Long hair, beard. A metal head basically. But at least they let you be who you are. You can be scruffy, but still be respectful, kind and a worker.

I'm so glad I haven't had to work a retail job yet. Hopefully I won't have to.

Sucks for your co-worker :/

The boss is taking himself too seriously if he thinks that a job at Walmart is only good enough for well dressed applicants. Unreasonable standards.

Going on the info we have, maybe he really wasn't a good representation (looking scruffy) and maybe he had past issues with not doing good work?

I don't know, maybe the DM is an asshole, but I doubt someone is so heartless as to just go around randomly firing people before Christmas.

I know, I know, I'm a corporate apologist, etc.
