The 2015 RPG thread - A weak sequel but still a good year

Durante

Member
This thread is an official sequel to my 2014 thread.

The idea is to serve as a repository of RPGs set for the year, to allow discussion of games in the genre that don't have a thread, as well as general discussion of the genre. And, of course, to provide my renowned editorial listing in the OP. Don't tell anyone, but I heard most developer bonuses are now tied directly to Durante hype points.

Let's start with the table. Criteria for inclusion: (i) officially announced 2015 english-language release, (ii) the first english-language release of the game (no ports), (iii) doesn't look like vapourware completely, (iv) considered an RPG in the broadest possible sense by Durante (no action games with a few "RPG elements", no MMOs).

Explanation of the columns: ("?" means that either the information isn't available yet or I simply don't know, if you know any of this information please post it)
  • Party: Do you control an entire party of characters?
  • Perspective: The main perspective the game is played from. ("Isometric" also counts 3D perspective projection from a traditional "isometric-like" camera perspective)
  • Coop: Does the game support cooperative play with at least 2 players?
  • Structure: Is the game more linear or open in overall structure?
  • Battles:
    - Time: How does time proceed during battles (TB = turn based; Action = real-time, action based; RT = real-time, command based; RTwP = real time with strategic pausing)
    - Positioning: How can you position your character(s) during battle? (Squares = on a square grid; Hexes = on a hexagonal grid; Free = freely in space; Row = in different rows [usually in blobbers]; None = no significant positioning [ie some JRPGs])
  • Dialogue:
    - Trees: Does the game feature dialogue trees? (something more involved than just selecting between 2 answers 5 times in the game)
    - Checks: Does the game use skill checks to gate dialogue options?
  • Separate Maps:
    - World: Is there a separate "world map" interface fro traveling to different locations?
    - Battle: Do battles take place on a separate screen from the rest of the game?
  • Release: Projected release date of the game.
  • Platform: Which platform(s) will the game be released on. (Multi = more than 2, always includes PC)
  • URL: URL of the official webpage

Unlike last year, I'm not going to do screenshots and a writeup for every single game in the table, simply because of time constraints. I'll restrict myself only to those I'm personally really looking forward to. If anyone else wants to do a writeup for another game (following roughly the same style in terms of images/length) I'll include it in the second post.

The Special Selection

Age of Decadence

1_aod_ss1oju64.png
1_aod_ss2equug.png

Age of Decadence is a turn-based, isometric PC RPG in development since forever and is designed to be challenging. It's being made by a small indie team at Iron Tower Studios. It recently became available on Steam as an early-access game. It sits at 7/10 Durante hype points for RPGCodex cred and intransigence.

Atelier Shallie

shallie_logohyu2k.png
shallie_ss1esu8x.png
shallie_ss2dluet.png

The next Atelier game from the intrepid team at Gust (who continue to make increasingly fantastic console JRPGs while the rest of their industry crumbles). The Atelier games are JRPGs with a crafting/alchemy focus and an unusually (for the sub-genre) nonlinear story structure. Shallie changes up the timit-limit base gameplay featured in all Atelier games on PS3 so far, and since I'm not yet sure how I feel about that, I'm only awarding it 8/10 Durante hype points despite my undying love for the series.

Cosmic Star Heroine

7_cosmic_logoeiuyt.png
7_cosmic_ss119ujr.png
csh_ss2gprch.png

Zeboyd Games' next title which was successfully crowdfunded back in 2013. This game seems to take primary inspiration from Chrono Trigger for its basic presentation/structure, with turn-based battles taking place directly on the exploration map. Will also feature a Suikoden-like base building mechanic. Last year I put this one at 5/10 hype points since it felt soo far away, but now it's much closer and has continuously looked better, so I'll increase that to 7/10.

Pillars of Eternity

21_eternity_logoqiude.png
21_eternity_ss15xuur.png
21_eternity_ss27du33.png
poe_ss3rlush.png
poe_ss4ixun3.png

Pillars of Eternity is an RPG in the best sub-genre (isometric party-based), made by a dream-team of the best people in the industry at Obsidian (Sawyer, Avellone, Cain), using the best gameplay system for this type of game (RTwP). It will be hailed as the true spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate and cement this glorious new era of CRPGs as more than just a fleeting fancy. The only problem with PoE will be that it's too good. 11/10 Durante IGN hype points and a gold star. You know what? Fuck it, PoE gets 5 images.

Serpent in the Staglands

staglands_logo41uie.png
staglands_ss147un3.png
staglands_ss25xuij.png

Serpent in the Staglands was kickstarted in April last year for the paltry sum of $28058. At that time, I was still skeptical given the small goal ($10k) and only pitched in for the lowest tier. However, the updates since then have convinced me that the Whalenaught studio couple know what they are doing. Of course, being an isometric RTwP party-based game also helps, and puts this Serpent at a solid 8/10 Durante hype points.

Shadowrun: Hong Kong

srhk_logox5pju.png
srhk_ss1dvrhn.png
srhk_ss20zrsa.png

Last year, I wrote this about Harebrained Studios' upcoming Dragonfall: "I think they can pull it off, but after the still somewhat recent release of the first game I'm not really dying to play another, so Dragonfall gets a moderate 7/10 Durante hype points.". Well, you know what? Fuck that. After literally just completing the Director's Cut of Dragonfall yesteraday, I can't wait to play another. If HBS manage to follow the same trajectory of improvement which was apparent going from the original Returns to Dragonfall, not even the sky is a limit. A full 10/10 Durante hype points.

Torment: Tides of Numenera

torment_logos2zbq.png
torment_ss1ybzrw.png

The spiritual successor to the greatest game of all time, in development at inXile entertainment. I can't wait, but I will have to, and therefore this gets haha-if-you-think-this-releases-in-2015-I-got-a-bridge-to-sell-you/10 Durante hype points.

Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

29_witcher_logo2xuiw.png
29_witcher_ss20sup5.png
witcher3_ss2m1i0n.png

CD Projekt RED are reaching for the stars with the next-gen-as-fuck open-world Witcher 3. Witcher 2 is still one of the best looking RPG of all time, and #3 seems to follow in its footsteps at least in that regard. I rated this one at 8/10 last year, but now I'd reduce that to 7/10 Durante hype points. Not because of the "OMG downgrade" sillyness that some engage in, but because I can't shake the fear that it might be a case of quantity over quality, at least to some extent. I hope CDPR prove me wrong.

Almost There

Games which closely miss getting on the special selection train, but which I would still feel bad writing nothing about (think of these as 6/10s):
  • Grim Dawn : This still seems like the most promising upcoming Diablolike. Certainly one I'll spend many hours cooping.
  • Trails in the Sky: SC : I enjoyed FC, perhaps not as much as many others, but certainly enough to be hyped for its sequel.
  • Underrail : A promising indie title with a lot of depth, that would make my list if not for my strong preference for party-based games in isometric settings.

Lemons

While doing research for this thread, I found out the following which are too bad not to write about:
  • Project Phoenix : Remember this one? It looks embarrassingly awful given the budget it attained on kickstarter, compared to many other games on this list made on a shoestring budget.

FAQ

Durante, have you gone soft? What's with all those high hype point ratings?
The comparatively higher ratings are because I only did writeups for games I care about a lot this year, rather than anything under the sun. If something didn't hype me for at least a 7 point equivalent it didn't make the list.

Why do you hate game X? It's not included in the table!
If it fulfills all the requirements outlined at the top (check that!), then post about it (and include the entire row for the table, or at least as much as you know). Likely I simply didn't know about the game.

Since we added CRPG's how about SRPG's?

Disgaea 5 will be on PS4 this year. Also Persona 5 is scheduled for 2015 yeah?

Does Dragon Quest: Heroes employ more RPG elements then other games of its ilk? Remember hearing some impressions that felt like that may be the case.

Not bad list though. Main one of my tastes of Xenoblade no doubt.

Delays sure made your job easy this year. I think two thirds of these were in last year's thread :p

I kickstarted Pillars of Eternity, so day 1 for that. I might support Cosmic Star Heroine with my day 1 money as well, since I like supporting Zeboyd games. Other than that, I will pick up most of the others at some point (at a discount).

Does Koei-Tecmo ever bother to put their Atelier games on sale on PSN? I still have to pick up Esha and Logy at some point.

Will you update the thread over time if there is some localization announced?
Also, does Etrian Mystery Dungeon count? It probably should.

Great thread and OP!

Trails in the Sky SC is by far a top 5 jrpg coming out this year, even if you didn't love FC as much as I or others did that ending alone should have pushed SC very high up the list. The fact FC was an amazing game just further adds to this

Pretty sure the Vita ones have been on sale at some point. Also I'm not sure but the PS3 ones might have been on sale during anime game sales? (not sure on that one though since I tend to buy the anime games I want before sales >_>)

Cosmic Star Heroine could be so good. Watched the gameplay video of it from PSX, and despite no sound effects, had good tunes and it looks so much like Phantasy Star. Love it. Battle system looks to borrow from Chrono Trigger.

Kind of wish I backed Serpent during the KS but the devs were too much of an unknown quantity to me at the time. It's coming along nicely though. Really hope Witcher 3 will retain the high quality for Geralt's final outing but if for some reason it doesn't, I'm confident that Pillars & Shadowrun will carry the rest of the year.

Is the new ys game definitely coming to the west this year?

All we know if that "Falcom wants it localized around the same time of the Japanese release", if that means asian localization (to China/Korea) or western localization we don't know.

I want to believe it will, but it's probably early 2016...

HK-47

Oh, bitch bitch bitch.
Underrail is going make you eat your words for not putting it on special selection, you party based whore

How do you not add Persona 5!? My most anticipated game of the year! And one of GAFs 10 most anticipated games of the year. Also Etrian Mystery Dungeon and Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2: Record Beaker (or is this one considered a port) are not on there.

But anyway this year is going to kick ass on the RPG front! So far there's Persona 5, Xenoblade Chronicles X, Tales of Zestiria, Etrian Mystery Dungeon, Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2: Record Beaker, and Final Fantasy Type-0 HD (and probably Etrian Odyssey Untold II: Knight of Fafnir and Bravely Second, but those are not announced yet).

2015 is going to slay me and my wallet! And I'm ready for it!

I would also like to mention that Tales of Zestiria is not fixed cam. Tales hasn't been a fixed cam game outside of battle for it's last 3 entries.

Age of Decadence --> weak maybe

Bloodborne --> LORD Miyazaki wills it!

Cosmic Star Heroine --> still on the list, still a strong maybe

Darkest Dungeon --> HELL YES

Pillars of Eternity --> still on the list, still a maybe

Tales of Zesteria --> a weak yes

Witcher 3 --> still on the list, still a yes

Torment: Tides of Numenera --> more P:ST is a good thing

Trails in the Sky: SC --> Still on the list, still a HELL YES

Xenoblade X --> Still on the list, still a yes

Etrian Mystery Dungeon --> only if it's $50>

People, if you want a game listed that isn't yet, provide the table entry for it.

As for Persona 5, does it have an official English language release date? I couldn't find one.

A weak sequel but still good? Nice Neverwinter Nights reference.
Huh? I don't get your meaning. NWN1 isn't good, and NWN2 is not a weak sequel as its better than its predecessor :p

No way Torment is being released this year !

I'm looking forward for Bloodborne, PoE, Shadowrun, Witcher.
If I have the time : Cosmic Star Heroine (we need a revival of 16bits Phantasy Star games), Darkest Dungeon, the new Atelier, M&B2.

The last updates for Serpent in the Stagland showed a much stronger game that what we saw last year. I will keep a close eye on this one.

Of note for 2015 too, Underworld Ascendant and Bard's Tale 4 being kickstarted the coming months. We should keep them in mind :)

Pillars of Eternity, The Witcher 3, Xenoblade Chronicles X, Shadowrun Hong Kong and if Torment manages to hit the 2015 release date... oh man, what a year I'll have.

It's been announced for a 2015 US release multiple times. No specific date, but it's definitely been announced for this year.

Hurrah! I thought after the amount of work last years thread took you said you were never doing this again :p

Also if folks weren't already on the PoE bandwaggon by now, and 11 Durante hype points doesn't push them over the edge, I don't know what will.

Anyway thanks for putting this together... again.

Trails in the Sky: SC, Etrian Mystery Dungeon, Persona 5, Etrian Odyssey Untold 2, and Xenoblade motherfucking Chronicles X are the reason I'm excited for JRPGs this year.

Also missing is Brandish: The Dark Revenant, a fantastic JRPG that came out some days ago.

Nice thread, Durante.

I really love that Pillars and Torment are going all-in on the beautiful backgrounds. Timeless look if done right.

I remember playing that preview/demo/prototype for Age of Decadence ages ago. It was fucking hard. If this is the year they're finally able to wrap up production... nice. I was hyped for it at one point yet even I almost forgot it existed.

Thats impossible. Because NWN is trash.
Huh? I don't get your meaning. NWN1 isn't good, and NWN2 is not a weak sequel as its better than its predecessor :p
heathens! :p

I think the year looks fine.

I'm in for at least the following:
Darkest Dungeon
The Banner Saga 2
Pillars of Eternity
The Witcher 3

Maybe also Persona 5, Bloodborne and Xenoblade Chronicles X

Aside from Bloodbourne and Witcher 3 (Which I'm sure is going to murder my PC)...

Cosmic Star Heroine speaks to me. That presentation is awesome.

Talking to animals all the time in Shadows of Undrentide was a lot of fun, I don't care what anyone says.

This wait for Pillars is killing me. I've watched like 3 or 4 streams of it the past week. Thankfully I've got bg2ee and iwd on my tablet to hold me over..
