I am debating whether to purchase a PS4 or an XboxOne.

The technical aspects of sony's wonder box do seem to trump what the xbox offers. But the incredible reports of a massive graphical advantage sony has give me pause. In this day and age one machine that produces a visual experience that is so superior to its competitor surely must be working overtime under the hood.

Uh no. Sony put the best hw they could squeeze in it's form factor, nothing is overdone and nothing is compromised. Sony's engineering have to commended on this.

You should rather ask the question why its closest competitor had to be so big for the much smaller raw power it has and if MS could squeeze in more raw power in that big box.

My PS4 does not care about the environment so is happy to use more juice for better graphics.

My Xbox cares too much about the environment. Obviously his is better for my children and my children's children and so on. Buy an Xbox. Save the Planet

While some of the answers to my concerns appear to drift into the realm of the imaginary, I think there's a lot of valuable ideas to be considered in your remarks. Even the jocular ones.

For example the famous image several posters used of Italian immigrant construction workers sitting atop a girder in the rising Seattle skyline is particularly relevant. These fearless swarthy men built monuments of steel and concrete that will last for ages. It's a lot like the achievements that xbox gamers have spent so much time and effort amassing over the years. Those achievements are a tangible representation of a gamers personality and ultimately, their basic worth as a gaming enthusiast. A sort of digital fingerprint if you will.

Casting that aside for a yet untested system with a little more pizzazz is a tall order in my opinion.

My ps4 is quiet and hardly ever has the fans on full spin, so I think it will be fine in the long run. Whereas I'm pretty sure the only reason the XB1 is so big is because of the RROD on the 360 and MS overcompensated for a similar issue occurring on the XB1.

Err...Look at actual failure rates a bit into their lives if you're worried, the theorizing in the OP is kind of nuts. Unless their motherboards start to flex or something, the amount of work a chip does these days still means lives of decades, it's usually something around it that goes wrong.

And in the PS4s case, it doesn't achieve performance by being clocked higher, on the contrary, the XBO tried that to close the gap. Instead it simply has more compute units on the GPU, more work done in parallel.

Now I will admit that I'm not a nuts and bolts or numbers sort of gamer but durability is a big factor in any purchase. The ps4 is smaller and yet so much more is clearly occurring inside of it. The wear and tear on any components would theoretically be more of a concern right? Similar to how halogen bulbs tend to burn out quicker. Obviously it's too soon to tell if this will become an issue but I am still pondering.

In the x bone we see more tried and true working man's graphics. They may not always be as pretty to look at but if it means a more long term life span is that not preferable? I have made poor purchases in the past when it comes to electronics. The minidisc player I bought never became popular. The atari jaguar i spent 300 dollars on only had a few decent games. The sega game gear was decent but not memorable. I just wonder if the ps4 by virtue of being a "buzz worthy" system can fall into the same pitfall of a console that excels at the moment but is consumed by its own dazzling light. Sometimes when something or someone emerges in society that is so far ahead of its time they fade out our explode all too soon. Like MLK, JFK, or Mozart. To put it in electoinic terms that relate to videogaming, these men were all fuses who burned so brightly and intensely that their filaments snapped suddenly. Circuitry in any machine operates in a similar manner. If we all agree that a dependable purchase that delivers entertainment for a solid 10 years is preferable then I think the xboxone is the safer bet. I still have my G1 xbox 360. Never broke on me once. Noisy as hell sometimes but the goddamm workhorse delivers.

The Xbone is actually clocked higher, so theoretically, it should have a shorter lifespan ;-)

It won't be much of a difference though.

OP, the PS4 will have the better looking games and it's not going to have a catastrophic hardware failure.

The Xbox One will have great looking games and the Kinect integration is pretty cool (I have the Xbox One).

You can't really go wrong with either console, but as someone who was primarily Xbox, Xbox 360 these last two generations, I'll be switching to primarily gaming on the PS4. Take that as you will.

Hell, I'd vote for 720p. I mean it seems the more down to earth kinda resolution than 1080p. You know the kinda resolution you can sit down and have a beer with. 720p is also a proud, natural born American. Which means you can trust it too not only work hard but be dependable. Unlike that foreign 1080p. Sure it may look like it's doing twice the work for less pay but one day it'll just up and quit on you.

On the other hand I really don't think saying "your logic is insane, but because it's insane that means you should probably go with it" is really a great idea!

I'd say forget all this crazy mental gymnastics and look for whatever has what you want to play and/or has the features you want. We won't really have any thing solid on reliability until the generation's a few years in anyway, that's when we started seeing the RROD ruin parties then a year or so later the YLOD leaving an impact.

If it helps the way achievements are done on the xbone is pretty bad. You have to load a separate app to see whatever you just earned and looking through them takes ages. It's a real step back.
