Titanfall Beta (PC/Xbone) Impressions (No Key Begging/Trading or I will ban you!)

This thread is a bit redeeming, considering how GAF was knee-jerk trashing us at IGN for "overhyping" Titanfall.

Maybe, just maybe, we do lots of coverage on something because we're really, really enthusiastic about what we've seen and played. :)

Enjoy the beta, folks!

it would kill the mechanics of the game. they exist for the sake of the titans.
No they don't. They do fuck all for/against the Titans. They are there for filler because the dev didn't know how to ad a Balanced second class apart from Pilots. Turning them off wouldn't change the game since the AI is so stupid anyway.

Are you kidding?

You were ever doubting a 4770K and 780 Ti could handle this game!?

No, not at all, but I'm always worried about optimization issues. For example, Guild Wars 2 is not the most graphically intense game in the world, but in cities the frame rate drops well below 60 due to crappy optimization.

Glad to hear some great impressions so far.

Part of me still hopes they have some Quake style maps in there. :D Some crazy arena stuff just for Pilots and wallrunning. They could even do weapon placements etc.

The AI looks like shit now, but the cloud servers aren't being used right now. I imagine it will get better at launch.
The AI wont be changing. The Cloud is nothing its a service NOT A SERVER. The AI as it is now is how it will be in the final game. The so called "Cloud" servers are being used for the Beta.

Just FYI Cloud servers are nothing but Dedicated servers with a fancy name NOTHING has changed.

I was in my titan on the larger map backpedaling while a pilot was running towards me on the ground trying to hop on top. I somehow missed with my machine gun until he got pretty close to me, so I finally just punched him and squashed him into the ground. It was awesome.

I can feel your anger for the lack of Aussie data centers bleeding through every post. :/ sorry man

yeah seeing a lot of scoreboards where the minion death counts are like double actual player deaths haha. hopefully this is just due to beta and ai is a lot better at launch

It's easy to say things from watching vids, but it is much harder to realize those dreams once the controller is in your hand.

You have to play it to understand, I thought that was bs before but now that I have played it I can see how true this rings.

would help to know what are you actually commenting about :D

Once people start making the move to the electric smoke, rodeos will be dangerous as hell. It's such a god send on Angel City because you can just stand there and let the smoke kill anyone on top of your Titan.

unlocked smoke yesterday, think I'd miss my vortex shield too much...

That is the coolest thing for me.
While you play basically in each match something legendary happens, almost as if it was a goddam action movie.
You end a kickass wallrun with a devastating kill, you destroy a Titan while on foot, you perform a kill while being ejected at dozens of feet in the air, you manage to run towards the spaceship at the end of a match with a thrilling escape while being stalked by enemy Titans and pilots patrolling the nearby area.

SO FUCKING EPIC.

BTW, can you help me with a couple of manouvers?

1) How do you get rid of an enemy that's rodeoing you on your back?
Is there simply nothing you can do apart from going out of the titan?

2) How do you do the wallhanging? Not the wallrun, the wallhanging...

Thanks guys!

Do Titans explode as soon as you eject when they're in doom mode, or is it possible to eject too early and land on it just befor it explodes, killing you?

It would be a nice replacement for the glorious accident that was accidentally killing yourself with the Predator missile :p

How are the keyboard controls for traversal?

1)Jump out and kill. Or use the Electric Smoke upgrade.

Yea I definitely have an issue with the bots or the number of them. The bots are an annoyance on a few levels. The first is that if you shoot the plentiful number of them, you show up on radar unless you have silenced weapon, which can make it really easy for a pilot to come behind you. The second part is due to the scoring as people with few pilot kills but hordes of minion kills are seemingly ending up on the top of the scoreboard charts.

I'm not sure whether increasing the player count and reducing the bot count would solve this but I don't think the solution in the game as it is now, is the correct one.

Starting to really fall into the same FPS cycle that happens to me.

My screen shows me starting to rodeo
But then it says I am dead from being stepped on.

Played about 4 rounds now on PC.

Game handles and plays extremely well. It feels really good. The wall running, jumping, shooting, movement, it's all just extremely solid.

To me though it's nothing 'revolutionary'. It's different than CoD or BF for sure, but unless I'm playing with friends I don't see myself playing it alone, I'm just not a big solo FPS MP kinda guy I guess.

They're clearly there to increase kill rate and ensure Titan's drop more regularly regardless of player skill. It's not hard to work out man.

THE WORDS! They'll drift away without the _!
Not loving it so far. The gameplay itself seems fine, I'm just really burnt out on CoDish games (could be that I'm just playing it like CoD).

Also, as an Australian the lag seems fine (a whole 3 games in).

i like them in attrition, each bot counts as 1 and pilots are 10.
keeps the counter slowly rising with a chance at a comeback.

Just played for a bit over an hour (PC), and I'm echoing sentiments about the lag as an Australian. Of course, this isn't a problem with Titanfall itself, but I'd certainly be far more inclined to buy it at launch/full price if Australian servers were guaranteed reasonably soon. As it currently stands, it would just annoy me far too much.

Trying to look past the lag, I was really enjoying my time with it. Both the infantry and Titan gameplay were excellent fun. The gameplay as infantry harkened back to old school twitch shooters, with amazing agility and movement. I found myself fogetting all about double jumping and wall-running and then reminding myself of it's existence, only to start dominating as I started using it. It also controls beautifully once you get the grip of it, which took only minutes. You can't help but feel a bit helpless when playing as infantry when a Titan is on your tail in a somewhat open area, but I suppose that's more or less intended. One thing that did bother me as infantry was the Smart Pistol. I'm really not a fan of it - it seems counter-intuitive to be playing an FPS only to have a weapon that doesn't even require proper aiming, especially in such a fast paced environment. I haven't used it myself, but I was always frustrated when I was killed by one. Watching the killcam and seeing my shots apparently completely miss with my lag, only to have a guy just strafe and pull the trigger once to kill me started to annoy me.

Titan gameplay is fantastic, especially against other Titans. It really seems to depend on who has the quicker reflexes and split-second decision making as to who will make it out of the fight alive, which is awesome. In one game, I was in a firefight with a Titan, and as we were both about half health, the enemy had a friendly come out of nowhere and start assaulting me. Pulling up my shield and absorbing his rockets just as my damage core ability became active, then flinging them back at him and finishing him off with my cannon, only to make a quick getaway from the first Titan and survive the ordeal was a huge rush and made me feel like a complete badass. I also actually enjoyed the panic of having someone ride rodeo on your Titan and not knowing what strategy to take - a couple of times I was outsmarted and as I ejected from my Titan, they also jumped off and killed me before I got the chance to regain my balance.

Having AI on the battleground to incentivize racking up XP and quicker Titan deployment is a fantastic idea. As a result, I don't think I ever actually encountered a camper, unlike every other shooter out there, which right there makes it a lot more fun for me than Titanfall's competition. It's also a nice concept to force enemies to come up on the radar as they kill the AI, works as a nice middle-ground rather than having enemy positions plastered on your radar at all times. As for the AI itself, hopefully it does get improved, as I would always see 3-4 of them just sitting down in a corner and looking at a wall - essentially nothing but fodder for points. It would be great if the AI actually posed somewhat of a threat. Coming across one AI dragging another's body through a room was great, and the first time I saw it, caught me off-guard. Hopefully more things like that can happen in the future.

I also really, really like the idea of the epilogue with the losing team desperately trying to escape to gain some bonus XP. I only ever managed to actually escape once, and it was an amazing rush of adrenaline fending off infantry and trying to dodge enemy Titans while still staying in short range of the pick-up point as time ticked down.

As for performance, handles great on my rig (i7-3700k, HD7950) with everything on high, but the leap to insane for textures made an enormous difference in fps and I was struggling with it for, really, not a huge upgrade. Once I turned that off, I ran with a rock solid 60+ fps.

All in all, it would be my go-to FPS multiplayer game (haven't played one on a regular basis since Call of Duty 4), but the issues with the lag are a bit too much of a deterrent, which is an outright shame. I look forward to Australia getting servers in the future.

Oh, and by the end of my time with it, it was still bothering me killing AI called Spectres, considering I've been using this handle for over 10 years now. :p

Use your camo - you're almost invisible to Titan optics, turn 180, jump on the Titan and blow its brains out.

nevermind.. the AR is my favorite weapon now.

do we know if there will be other ARs/SMGs in the game other than these?

Dko5 mentioned in the stream that his favorite weapon wasn't in the beta so theres more to be seen in the final version it seems
