Retro's next Donkey Kong should be a Third-Person Adventure-Shooter

Watch Da Birdie

I buy cakes for myself on my birthday it's not weird lots of people do it I bet
People usually throw around the idea of Nintendo developing a shooter, and usually the ideas thrown out are a more multiplayer-centric Metroid, a "Mario Paint Ball, or a re-imaging of Star Fox akin to the multiplayer mode in Assault.

However, I think if Nintendo ever would like to seriously look into developing a Nintendo-style shooter, Donkey Kong would be the perfect character to use. He already has a precedent using guns in Donkey Kong 64, and being a primate, he's human enough to not seem totally bizarre wielding (cartoony) guns, but also a funny animal thus "filtering" the violence so kids aren't shooting other humans.

So, here's my idea...Retro did great with Returns and I assume Tropical Freeze (I've yet to get my hands on it...), but a lot of people weren't happy with them working on a fuckin' Donkey Kong platformer, instead wanting them to work on Metroid. Personally, I think Donkey Kong has probably one more game left with Retro, but wouldn't it be neat instead of simply putting out another solid platformer, they went in a different direction and gave both sides what they wanted? Combining the adventure shooter elements of Metroid Prime with the world of Donkey Kong. And get David Wise back to compose some atmospheric music for really nice looking levels.

Alright, so, the game would be a third-person shooter (I feel that a FPS wouldn't work right since Donkey Kong isn't a human, and thus it'd feel weird to see through his eyes when he moves in a different way from us humans which would make the aiming feel unnatural) where Donkey Kong fights Kremlins (yes, they'd be back!) through using different fruit guns, like his Coconut Gun, a fast-paced Grape Gun, and like a...Banana Sniper Rifle? Also bring back the Pineapple Bombs. It'd make use of the Gamepad, as you'd use the left stick to move DK around, while the right stick could aim the crosshair, as well as using the shoulder buttons to lock on. Unlike other FPS, DK would be very agile, so there'd be a big element of moving around and dodging the enemy, for example, DK would be able to do his trademark roll to dodge enemy fire, then quickly fire back. He'd also have "parkour" elements, like he could quickly jump around and climb up ledges, and also swing from vines while simultaneously firing his gun at foes, so there'd be a lot of running and jumping to make the gunplay more fun and fantasy.

The set-up of the game would borrow from the old 3D Platformers, basically Donkey Kong would explore giant hub worlds, completing various missions, opening up new pathways, and like in Metroid Prime, finding new routes as he obtains new abilities and weapons, so basically a new Donkey Kong 64 meets Metroid Prime. Keep the collecting simple...there'd be basic bananas, used to purchase ammo and such, and Golden Bananas which would be the "Stars". Maybe throw in some side-view levels on occasion where things become a more typical DKC-style level, to pay homage to the series. My idea for the plot would be King K. Rool has developed "K. Rool Land", a giant amusement park/zoo where he's captured all of DK's friends, and it's up to him to save them. Just because I think an amusement park would be a fun place to explore, I'm thinking the zoo element would allow you to have little "biomes" located in the park, like an Arctic Zone, for more varied and atmospheric locales.

Of course, in addition to a robust single-player mode, add a solid multiplayer mode (online hopefully, but if Nintendo can at the very least develop a solid couch multiplayer game, more power to them) where you get to play as the other Kongs and Kremlins, and can also ride around on Rambi as a mount while firing your gun at the other players.

It'd be pretty dongalicious.

Please not ;) I want a new 3D JnR from Nintendo though that doesn't star Mario and his boring friends (DK, Yoshi or Kirby)

I want Retro to create their own IP. It should be something that tells a mature and captivated story...

I think it's a clever idea - if Nintendo ever made an honest attempt at a shooter, this might be how they'd do it - but it doesn't seem likely.

The fact is, Retro should be working on something that can sell consoles to the hardcore crowd. DK is good, but he just doesn't have any appeal with the core audience. Focusing those efforts on something deadset at the hearts of the dedicated fan - one who may have written Nintendo off for not having an attractive exclusive, would be more productive.

Eh, Donkey Kong Country doesn't seem to work all that well in 3D.
2.5D seems like the best fit for the series - basically what they have now, but make it so the levels actually wrap in and out of the background like in the Klonoa games instead of staying pretty much on a 2D plane the whole time.

It should be a Max Payne-like game starring Diddy Kong

All their attempts at active storytelling have been a disappointment. A cool setting with a nice backstory and satisfying gameplay mechanics should be the focus. It just needs to be a setting that fulfills some need not already served by Nintendo's game portfolio.

Retro's Metroid is a thing of the past , some of key members left to make Armature studio.

Retro is not the same Retro , kinda like how Rare is no longer the same Rare.Retro will surely bring quality though but it won't be in Metroid and it will not be in any type of shooting game.

I'll take anything different, even Cranky Prime. I lost my enthusiasm when we started seeing more and more of the same. So bring it on.

This probably wasn't aimed at me, but I actually don't want Retro to make Metroid either. I want to see them tackle something new. They proved they can do 1st person shooter/adventure incredibly well, they've proved they can do 2D platforming incredibly well, I want to see what else they can do. However, I don't want it to be in the Donkey Kong universe. Something new (not necessarily a new IP, but that would be nice).

Sure, many of the core team is gone, but they've still yet to produce anything that's not fantastic.

Retro's next game shouldn't be a Donkey Kong game, imo. Except if they have two teams where one could handle DK and the other one would handle the rest (so basically Metroid or maybe even something original).

I'd love to see them making a new Starfox.
Or maybe reinvent Urban Champion into an awesome 3D Brawler like God Hand. I'd totally play that.

I have a fever, chills, headache, and can't sleep. This thread is perfect for me.

I honestly like your idea, OP. It's just that Nintendo likely would never approve it

I quite enjoyed DK 64 multiplayer when I was a kid.

I wouldn't say no to the idea, but I'd rather see a 3D DK platformer before a shooter to be honest.

I'm pretty sure we had a similar thread may a month or two ago, mentioning the already applied Weapons mechanism in DK64.

I hoping that Garden Warfare does well help create more cartoony shooters.

I like FPS games but feel I over them at this point.

Gimmie some Time Splitters/Serious Sam/zany shit.

SolVanderlyn

Thanos acquires the fully powered Infinity Gauntlet in The Avengers: Infinity War, but loses when all the superheroes team up together to stop him.
I'd play it.

My first reaction is, "What?! That's bananas!"

Than I remember Oddworld and then there's Garden Warfare.

I guess anything can work as long as it's done right and it's fun!

Edit: But in all seriousness, we don't need this.

Better idea: DK vs Metroid!

Inspired by (the best movie ever) Predator, the game would have Samus as a predator hunting DK and the rest.

a third person adventure shooter, eh?

maybe they could also introduce a larger cast of characters, too! you could have DK be the standard, then maybe Diddy as a lighter variant, another heavier character, and maybe a couple with interesting mobility options

they could have a ton of puzzles designed to take advantage of their myriad unique skills, and the combination thereof

there's tons of potential here, OP! follow your dreams!

Ew. No thanks. I think they should either make a new Metroid game or a third Donkey Kong Country with the kremlings (they shouldn't even bother making a new DKC without them).

I stopped at the title: do not even fucking dare.

Retro needs to do something brand new, or else go back to Metroid.
NO.MORE.RETRO.DK.
