What is your preferred platform and why does it suck?

A PC - and it sucks because it's incredibly expensive (for me) to be up to date hardware-wise, but you are never up to date. And if you reach the graphical optimum, then game is already old and another game is in your focus.

I don't think this is true, although I wish it was. It was true maybe before 2005. The fact that every game is a console port pretty much allows 5 year old graphics cards to run most games at max settings.

If you bought an 8800 GTX in 2006 you could have played almost every game at 1600x900 or above for the entire console generation.

3DS: the OS sucks, Nintendo Network sucks, the screen resolution sucks, and it has region-locking which sucks.

PC: I hate that it's not a handheld I can play in my couch, twerking with settings and that it doesn't have Nintendo games and that it is so poor for local multiplayer

I think my dream gaming device would be a Vita with pc specs, pc and nintendo library with the possibiliy to connect to a tv and play some games with m/kb and/or controllers.

You may say I'm a dreamer

Dolphin?

I don't have a preferred platform. I just play whatever I'm in the mood for. My least used is probably my PC, although I 'm hoping to rectify that with South Park and Dark Souls 2.

PC (it used to be 360).

-Games tied to non-steam platforms (like uplay, origin), i'm okay with a behind the scenes DRM, but not to tie games with bullshit no-value added platforms that serve no purpose except adding downtime and removing steam features. Steam won, completely, stop fighting this retarded war.

-The inherent weakness where the most important software developer on PC, Microsoft, also holds a competing platform, xbox, which pushes it to pull IBM's on PC gaming. We survived GFWL, but i shiver thinking what monstrosity GFWL2 will be.

-Crazy fragmentation. Most PC don't have proper dedicated video hardware, most don't have a decent dual-analog controller.

-After Steam decided to throw away its reputation by allowing scammy and shitty unfinished alpha version on their storefront, there is no longer an assured quality store for PC games.

-Hardware: if something breaks in a PC, good fucking luck. Most of the time it's easy to diagnose, but not always, and if you fall in the "weird problem few people have" prepare for months of error searching.

-Apple not making a modular machine between mac mini and imac: ok this will sound like a moot point to some, but i'm an artist, before owning a gaming PC i had a work mac, apple is a terrible value proposal for gamers, but the downgrade from OSX to windows is downright cruelty, even from the incredibly retarded Lion. At some point i'll get fed up of eating shit and having ALT steal focus from photoshop, and i'll fork back to get an iMac, especially if windows9 is as complete shit as 8, then bye bye powerful and cheap upgradeable pc gaming.

Wii U and 3DS. While it's not something that affects me personally, it is a shame that they are region locked. In some ways because I know I can't play something bought outside my region I shut off learning about said games so I'll be oblivious to what I'm missing.

The problem with Nintendo in general is that it feels like they have some great ideas but then half arse them. I mean just look at the VC. We have to start from scratch AGAIN! Hopefully they have future proofed it this time but we'll only know that with the next system. Oh and that's not to mention the 50hz problem...

And something completely minor, but why oh why did they change how Miis work on the WiiU. For them to appear in the background of games you now have to make them your favourites. It's just an annoying extra step that serves no purpose when it worked perfectly fine before. Favourite should just be for the Mii selection screens to push them to the front. All Miis should replaced the randomly generated background ones favourite or otherwise!

PS4.

I think Valve won't support it.

I don't actually mind buying all the systems, it's not the money, it's the fact they all become redundant outside of the prime system, and the others for only a couple of exclusives. I hate Windows, I want to throw my PC out a window and get a MacMini, but I can't not play L4D3 and HL3, so am I really going to buy a SteamMachine for the few Valve games I care about? That's wasteful even for me.

I'm actually pretty ready for the one platform future at this point.

Playstation Consoles

Besides PS1 and PS2, PS3 and 4 had major issues with regards to actually having compelling titles during the first 1-2 years of its life.

Compared to when I bought a Dreamcast, it was a world of a difference.

As people mention though, for PS systems, you're pretty much paying for the potential if you get one during the first year.

That said, Sony's consoles for me end up being my personal favorite for every generation since PS1. Here's hoping this gen continues the streak.

As others have said, about the WiiU:

-non existant 3rd party support (aside from indies)
-no real account system (yet? )
-no browser version of the eShop

...but goddam, the firstparty titles are stellar !

PC gets the motherfucking shaft from just about every developer. It's like the most effeminate inmate in a maximum security prison. Dark Souls 2 is coming god knows when. Same with GTAV and so many other great games exclusive to console.

Vita's screen gets dirty too quickly, and it's very noticeable too. Like what the hell, I barely touched it but it's all filthy again. Maybe it's just me, but I don't have this problem with my phone.

PC: Late ports, no ports.

My favorite games are fighting games and PC is unbeknownst to almost all of japanese game development. Nyu Media pls gib UNiB on steam.

My three favorite platforms right now:

3DS - Sucks because it's region locked.
Wii U - Sucks because no third party support, although that doesn't bother someone like me who owns multiple consoles. Also, it's region locked.
PS3 - Sucks because... I honestly can't think of something. Sorry. :)

- No sports games. PC's used to have a pretty rich background of this. Now I think we're limited to the last gen version of NBA2K and FIFA. EA doesn't make Madden or NHL PC anymore and 2K doesn't bring their baseball games to PC. It's one thing to be lacking in something like JRPGs - this was never a big genre on the PC. But the decline of the sports game genre on PC's has been pretty sad to see.

NHL04 Rebuilt 2014

MVP Baseball 2013 Mod

PC: If given the choice I'll go PC every time!

That being said it sucks for:
Eastern games
Console exclusives
Controller support (to many games that have a console counterpart lack proper controller support)

The only problem I have with PC is that I can't sell my games. So much junk in my library.

Also sports games. Can't beat playing FIFA with your friends

Right now, it's probably my 3DS XL.

Obviously, it sucks because of region locking, but I also hate the fact that this fucking toy feels like it's gonna fall appart every time I pick it up.

Battery life is shitty, screens are awful, plastics are flimsy, os is slow as hell...

Yet, i love the games.

NeoGAF. Where you list the things you like and immediately follow it up by analyzing why it sucks.

I game on most platforms and they all do something better than the others. Wii U has an amazing 1st party library, the PS4 is a marvel of cost/performance and PC just doesn't have any negatives. It's cheap, has the best performance and usability. The 3DS is the second coming of christ.

3DS

Horribly slow OS
Stupid friend codes
No friend chat-messaging
Western "mature" games are practically non existent
Not many racing games with real cars

Does dolphin play gc/gba/ds/3ds and wii u games? Serious question

Dolphin emulates Gamecube and Wii games. The Wii U is way too recent to have an emulator. Same thing for the 3DS. Emulators are available for pretty much all other Nintendo platforms.

The PS4 is my preferred platform, here's stuff I don't like:
- Can't play USB media.
- Can't play/display 3D blu-rays.
- Controller battery is on the short end.
- I want the promised instant game resume.
- HBO Go/Nordic not currently available (but announced).

Pc - sometimes it takes like 15 minutes to google and fiddle with crap to make shit work the way it's supposed to

The only reason why I'm a console only gamer, waiting for a steambox :-)

For me

Vita, ergonomics sucks

PS4, not enough games I bought and played to much already....

My preferred platform the last few years is 3DS.

It sucks because the internet is slow, it has the lowest resolution screen of any device I own, and it is fucking region locked.

3DS- Bad screens, account system and online system are the main ones I think.

EDIT: 3D isn't that great either

Currently X1:
  • No backwards compatibility. I spent waaay too much on XBLA last-gen to be dealing with this...
  • All the small but important things the 360 did better. Things like playing music in the background (or even accessing my music at all).
  • Those bumpers... my god...
  • Gold paywall. I'll always have Gold regardless, but the console's potential as a media device is insta-killed by locking services away for people without a sub.
  • Digital 180. I loved what it was. Was perfect for me, as I'm no longer buying physical games. The 180 has cost me loads extra in games.
  • Game chat and Skype chat being linked. Seriously?...
  • No notification when a friend comes online. Makes the console feel less connected.
  • Lacking some media apps. I want my Sky Now, and Crunchyroll, so I can stop having to use the 360 for these.
  • Appstore. Where is it? I want Plex yersterday.
  • HDMI-IN lag. I would like to leave the 360 connected through it, but it makes games unplayable.
  • Dashboard layout. As much as I like the Kinect, the dashboard should still be easy to navigate without it. It should be more like the 360's was. How the hell do you even get to the OneGuide without a voice command!? Fix it MS!
  • Specs. I have a PS4 (and PC) where I can buy any multiplats that look/run poorly... but to be honest, I'd rather not have to bother with it. If the X1 was more powerful, I would be fine with just it until the PS4 has the exclusives to justify itself.
There's probably more I'm forgetting right now also. However, even with all these it's definitely the console I'm most impressed by currently, and feel has the most potential over the course of the generation (via OS updates). If I were to write a similar list for any of my consoles, the length would be ridiculous. Other than the 360... the 360 was godlike.

The 3DS. 3D is a feature that I never use, not even for ALBW.

The browser is ass. It's slow loading and the layout makes little sense. Why in Arceus' name is the scroll bar not on the touch screen?

Mine is PS3 and the only thing I can think of that sucks about it is that the newer models don't have PS2 BC.

PC - yesterday it started BSODing on my ass and I couldn't find the culprit so I formated all drives. Fun stuff.

PS4 - No backwards compatibility. That's by far my biggest complaint, followed by the poor battery life on the Dual Shock 4. As a Wii U Pro controller owner, there's just no excuse for a battery life that short.

PC
No sony exclusives
DEVELOPERS KEEP FUCKING UP BORDERLESS WINDOWED. HOW HARD CAN IT BE.

PS4. My next day one purchase is Destiny and we all know how far that game is. At the moment the only 'major' game I have is BF4 and I'm not remotely interested in anything that's out or coming up (maybe WatchDogs a little bit).

The XBOX ONE.

It stings how Microsoft failed to convey the concept of the operating system which is in its own right true next-gen compared to the PS4 which is largely a hardware upgrade with minimal or no radical changes. They also failed the PR battle of 2013 where both Sony and Microsoft were looking into the same things (DRM, second hand sales, always online, etc) - Sony even admitted that - but again Microsoft played the public PR game very poorly. They left it wide open for Sony to capitlize on Microsoft's mistakes. I don't sympathise to Microsoft, I don't have any shares, but the message and concept behind the XBOX ONE does not deserve the level of controversy it received. I won't be of the above opinion if the XBOX ONE sucked, that would be a double failure, but as it stands, it's an excellent console.

I agree with you, too, OP. PC targeted games no longer exist. Remember Crysis? It made me, a console gamer, so jealous at the time.

PC targeted games exist. Just not ones that blow people away on graphics while appealing to mainstream audiences like Crysis did. Console gamers - hell, most PC gamers will never, ever, ever, ever be intrigued by an exclusive like Europa Universalis. To a lot of you it probably looks like a map with spreadsheets. I doubt anyone here is rushing out to get the recent sale of Rise of Flight (World War 1 flight sim). It's a graphical beaut but it's a World War 1 flight sim. To a guy like you who's a first time PC gamer, you're not interested in that. Modern PC gaming is missing something like Quake, Far Cry, Half Life 2 type exclusives that blew everyone out of the water back in the day.

There is a very strong argument to be made that Crysis was the best looking game of the last generation and it was released in 2007. Even if you consider the Last of Us the best looking game - it took the then next gen consoles six years to catch up to a mid 2000's PC game. PC's have been capable of next gen graphics since Crysis 1 at the very least; it's just that no one is willing to fund that sort of game since there is no money in the AAA PC exclusive.

The thing that sucks about the Vita is that limits you to 100 apps on a memory stick at the moment and the memory sticks only go up to 64. I need at least 128 for the future, preferrably 256. It's so convenient that switching memory cards is anti-vita to me. Nearly everything digital for speed and easy access making vita something special. But it is pretty constraining when space is low or you reached 100apps.

3DS
===
Not nearly enough classics on Virtual Console
No more 3D Classics (honestly I feel like this should have been a bigger feature of the system)
Not enough RPGs
No Metroid
No proper Castlevania
Lack of download play
Low resolution
Shitty battery
When 3D works, it works well. When it doesn't, it feels half-baked
No FPS games
No SNES games
No more GBA games
Lack of GB/GBC games
No Pokemon on Virtual Console
No Pokemon Trading Card Game (makes too much sense!!)
Worrisome account system in case of loss/theft
Lack of touch screen games
No book-style games like DS Brain Age/Ninja Gaiden

Still, it's my favorite system currently, and probably my favorite handheld of all time
