What is your preferred platform and why does it suck?

It's really difficult to get a thread going on NeoGaf on this matter since accusations of fanboyism fly everywhere so lets have fanboys do it to themselves. Maybe give a little history so we know you're legit.

To start if off, I am a PC guy. To call me a fanboy would actually be accurate as I rarely ever touch consoles or portable games. Haven't owned a console since the SNES days. Still can't play an FPS with a controller to this day. Just not happening. I try really hard to not insert my own values into console driven discussions but the reality is that I hate pretty much everything about what console gaming brought to the industry in the last decade - except for the games of course. I'm just talking about the pure business side of it.

But that's not the point of this thread, here's why the PC sucks IMO:

- No sports games. PC's used to have a pretty rich background of this. Now I think we're limited to the last gen version of NBA2K and FIFA. EA doesn't make Madden or NHL PC anymore and 2K doesn't bring their baseball games to PC. It's one thing to be lacking in something like JRPGs - this was never a big genre on the PC. But the decline of the sports game genre on PC's has been pretty sad to see.

- PC exclusives that specifically show off the graphical capabilities of the PC are non-existent. In the last 10 years I can think of: Crysis, Star Citizen and the maybe the Total War Games. PC gamers always tout how much better their (our) games look but for the most part, we're just getting souped up HD ports.

- There's a brewing battle on the digital distribution front between companies. I'm not a fan of EA games being exclusive to EA's service and Blizzard games being exclusive to Blizzard's service. It kind of creates platforms within a platform. Services like GOG I make exceptions for since their thing is to rework old games so they work on modern PC's.

- It's probably not the majority but it's significant and I'm a part of this group. A lot of the PC fanbase has a hard time accepting how modern gaming has changed. I am a bitter old gamer who thinks it has changed for the worst but I'm biased, I grew up playing PC's in the 90's and 2000's.

a Wii U and it sucks because barely any 3rd party support, the name, the marketing and smash fucking bros. isn't out yet.

I wouldn't consider myself a fanboy, but PC and 3DS.

PC's problems for me are the lack physical copies for a lot of the best modern games, linking in with a complete destruction of the used game market and relying a little too heavily on digital rights, which quite frankly aren't there yet.

3DS is much easier... Region lock.

To be fair, the PC used game market was dead long before Steam. And my stance on digital games has always been to pirate them if I get my access revoked. I'm not buying PC games twice.

Xbox One. It has so much potential that is untapped. The thing that makes it my goto platform over PS4 and Wii U is the TV integration and also my friends. I don't think most people get it if they don't have XB1 how crucial the TV integration is. As long as I'm not on a different input playing PS4 or Wii U, I am always connected to Xbox Live. Any requests for parties I immediately see. It's extremely quick to switch between tv, games, internet explorer, etc.

Now for why it sucks:

#1 - All of the content I bought for 360 digitally cannot be used on XB1. I bought hundreds if not over a thousand dollars of content for 360 digitally. It would mean so much if I could just play all my content on my new xbox system.

#2 - Lack of 3D blu-ray compatibility. It's coming but my copy of Gravity 3D is requiring me to use a standalone 3d blu-ray player for now. It's not an ideal solution.

#3 - Lack of proper DLNA/music streaming. Again, it's probably coming but the "Play to" solution sucks.

#4 - Digital prices of games are higher or equal to that of retail games. I HATE the backlash Microsoft got for their original plan of retail discs/digital games. Yes the 24 hour checkin would suck for some and surely they could've came up with a better implementation. However, I wouldn't have to worry whether I bought a game at gamestop, best buy, or digitally over Xbox Live. It would work the same. Therefore, I could get games at cheaper than MSRP when those stores had sales. Personally I believe Microsoft was in the right for this and was wrongly attacked. They should have elaborated more and maybe came up with a better DRM policy but this could've changed the industry. I see it no different than PC games that are steam works.

#5 - Lack of open app store. It will come but so far there are few too apps. I want my promised HBO Go and more importantly, hopefully Plex or VLC.

A distant last place might be the power difference between PS4 and XB1 but to be honest, that's not that important to me, I have a Wii U after all. The all-in-one concept matters a lot more.

Edit: Despite all this, it's still my goto platform and I prefer it way over PS4 or Wii U

What this guy said.

Also, original 3DS. What fault can I say huh... well... it's not confortable to game on. My hands hurts after a while. Especially when if you need to use the triggers.

PS4 was my preferred platform until I realized it actually did suck. So I built my first gaming PC. I'll have a hard time being convinced to go back to current consoles since they're just bad PCs these days. And I have no issues with comfy couch gaming, with Steam Big Picture and a 360 wireless controller.

But as it's my first gaming PC, I do I have issues. I don't like how trying to use my DS4 was a project. It's a hacked work around. PCs are supposed to be open and yes, there's likely a way you can do what you want to do. But it won't be ideal. At least it's better than not being able to at all. I also don't like the initial cost. It's more money to get started but still well worth it. Cheaper games, better games, no online fee.

I agree with you, too, OP. PC targeted games no longer exist. Remember Crysis? It made me, a console gamer, so jealous at the time.

I love my PS4 and here's why it sucks:

Amazingly capable system that is inexplicably missing features it's little cousin the PS3 did with ease:
  • No YouTube
  • No native MP3 or Video or Photo playback
  • No DLNA client
  • No support for external HDDs (other than for save files)
  • No ability to sort the main GUI by category, or create 'folders'
  • Can't turn off the DualShock 4 LED
  • Doesn't support wired USB controllers that PS3 did (Logitech wheels, Hori arcade stick etc)
  • No PlayTV
  • Driveclub still isn't here!

Wii u. Love the system and the lineup so far. Sales for it suck and don't bode well for future support and making it all that it could be.

PC.

- Proprietary Nvidia and AMD features. Just annoying when you can't have it all.
- Console exclusives. Only half serious with this one. If my preferred platform wasn't PC, playing in 1080p or lower wouldn't be a problem so it counts as a reason why PCs suck.

PC

New iterations of DirectX have always been a bit annoying because you have to upgrade to whatever OS Microsoft is trying to push along with getting new hardware. It'd be nice if DirectX Next would be backwards compatible with current hardware, but we all know at the very least we're going to have to spring for Windows 9.

PC... What sucks is all those late releases and the few ports that suck balls (but tbh, consoles also have those - see skyrim and Bayonetta PS3- and even bad PC ports often have the capacity to run better than their console counterparts given enough power).

Another thing that sucks about my current set-up is that my PC is pretty noisy, and I can't afford the parts that would make it quieter atm. At the same time I got the PC for free so I can't really complain. My next build will be designed with noise in mind though. I'd like something at least as quiet as a console.

Nah f that

all about dat opengl now

Nowadays since my 360 is slowly dying, it's the PC. It's sort of by default my preferred non-mobile platform, but still:

  • Local multiplayer functionality is sparse (endemic to gaming in general sorta, but devs have less incentive to include it and it shows).
  • Haven't been enthralled or interested by a PC exclusive game in a long time. My interest in indie or indie-sized gaming experiences is waning and the current crop of highly regarded indie games bore me. No AAA PC exclusives do it for me too.
  • Platform flat out sucks for racing games, probably my favourite genre.
  • Developers often can give a fuck less for optimization, especially LoD.
  • Most of the games I want to play are ports, and if they're available in retail, I'd still get them for my dying 360 instead of Steam.

WiiU

The architecture and power make third-party ports harder than they could be and the install base is doing little to provide incentives to deal with it

No real account system.

The first-party has screwed it over sales-wise because Nintendo has chosen the most niche possible design for their games, even if I personally enjoy many of them.

Wii U. You can understand why, with the total void of 3rd-party support, and Nintendo just being all around asshats with 21st century video gaming concepts & mechanics (UI, online infrastructure etc.) The gameplay is rock solid, like I am when I play any first-party Nintendo venture on a "next-gen" console, but I just get so sad at how ignorant N can be in regards to the way the wind is blowing.

I suppose, though, that I play the ever-loving shit out of my 3DS. So I guess that would be my true platform. And. It doesn't really suck. If I had to claw at a reason the 3DS sucks I would say... I wish it used higher-res screens, that weren't employing resistive touch tech. I mean, wtf. Same goes for Wii U gamepad, too. God damn it.

ive always preferred the xbox brand. sony exclusives have never interested me and the PS4s technological edge means absolutely fuck all to me. ive never seriously considered a Nintendo home console.

now, i think the xbox one is too young a platform to judge right now, so i'll just speak to my biggest problem with xbox, the Gold paywall for just about everything. the paywall is lame. please get rid of it. i dont mind a subscription service to play games if you can offer me dedicated servers and few freebies here and there, but needing gold to use netflix and youtube is ridiculous.

no real faults with any of the other stuff. see someone else's post for those.

I'm not convinced that is a smart confession to make on GAF.

If that's your stance, then you see why digital rights aren't there yet. Nobody should have the right to immediately revoke access to huge portions of your library in the first place. How you choose to cope with it is your own choice, but it doesn't remove the fact the problem is there.

I'm personally a big fan of buying Humble Bundle games. If for some reason I lose access to the Steam copies, I still have DRM free and sometimes Desura copies as well.

PC.

this is a personal opinion but i hate most PC exclusives compared to the ones on consoles. i have zero interest in strategy or MOBAs or MMOs. not a huge fan of 2D platformers either. there are some good ones like papers please, the swapper etc but they can't really be compared to games like Halo, TLOU etc

Currently PS4 I suppose

It sucks for the following reasons I can think of [will add more as I think of more]

  • MP behind a paywall
  • No external media support [HDDs, FDs etc.]
  • No Youtube App
  • Lightbar on controller
  • Controller battery life
  • No USB on the back of the console
  • Not very many good exclusive games at this point
  • Not many exclusives announced currently although will come etc.
  • Share button doesn't work 100%, sometimes is completely broken
  • Can't change account system name
  • Sony online store is both good and bad, runs a bit wonky sometimes
  • Store goes down sometimes
  • Party Chat & System isn't as good/user friendly as 360
  • Not as good a blu ray player as PS3
  • Region-locked DLC
  • Trophies have to manually sync

ATM its my PSV and what sucks is that it will most likely be the last Handheld Sony created.

It's like playing with a friend, knowing she'll die in a few years and also knowing no one will ever replace her :'(

PC is my preferred platform
- Game libraries spread across several clients
- Nvidia/AMD proprietary features/optimizations
- Games don't take advantage of PC hardware, and many of them cater to the LCD of laptop gaming peasantry
- Games are super cheap so I buy many games but don't even have time to play them all (this is both good and bad)
- Random hardware errors can occur that take a lot of trouble shooting
- I spend way more time tweaking games than I should.
- Little to no quality control (things like The War Z being allowed to exist and sold for actual money)

Hard to say, was playing mostly on 360 last gen. Had to switch to PS4 this gen.

So I guess preferred platform is PS4.

It sucks compared to Xbox in a few ways for me:

1. Region locked DLC
2. Trophy system is kinda shit compared to achievements, why the hell you have to sync it manually? Why games are displayed in last trophy earned order and not last time played? The whole leveling system is confusing compared to gamerscore.
3. No way to change PSN name or home region without creating whole new account.
4. PSN speed suck, I went through any solution I could. The only way to somewhat improve speed for me is running connection through VPN server that is close to Akamai CDN. On Xbox One I am able to download whole games in an hour or less, DR3 took something like 50 minutes. On PS4 last 900Mb BF4 patch took whole evening and night to download - had to leave console on overnight.

If Xbox One would have same specs as PS4 (i.e. 1080p games due to decent GPU) I wouldn't even bother switching my "main platform" and PS4 would be my secondary console as Xbox One now.

My only beef with 3DS is region lock and lack of SNES VC, Genesis 3D kinda is Genesis VC, actually better now that I think about it.

Region locked I solved by buying a 3DS LL, and having two consoles works in general due to the fact that I play Pokemon a fair bit.

PS2

It sucks because it's so fucking fragile, and I can't spare the money to replace my old one. I think I'll simply turn to emulation in the close future.

PS4 - it needs games. Also, 4 months after release, it still can't fucking record properly and Sony won't fix that.

3DS - It doesn't in the slightest. Although Fire Emblem Awakening was a mediocre FE and Pokemon X/Y was a disgrace to its franchise.

PC - lack of AAA exclusives that are here for the long term

If they can get away with a console release, that seems to be the way those series gravitate towards.

Old PS2 + Hard drive is the way to go. (requires network adapter and access to a modded PS2/Two to copy files to the memory card). That's is you mean the DVD drive is going bad.

Steam.

User: Gems can slip past your radar easily, I don't have time/patience to reserach all those games that find their way to the platform.

Platform: Valve has conditioned me to wait for permanent price drops + sales before purchasing anything if I just wait a year or two. How can indie companies grow if all they get is mere pennies from me?

Basically gaming development is too accessible now, Valve has opened the floodgates and competent developers will get lost in the sea of shit.

PS4

- no pausing downloads
- not as many games as I would like yet but that's soon to change
- no exporting screenshots to your PC
- share button generally very low quality
- library is at the end of the line after all your games, makes no sense

Loving my XB1 so far and the varied games MS are giving us so far, PVZ is awesome!

But here's a list of bug bears

Lack of support for 3d blu ray means I have to keep my br player using up space in my cabinet (so much for all in one)

No support for sky tv sat receiver in the uk

Would like to be able to change the order of devices the kinect turns things on as currently "xbox tv on" doesn't really work for me as the receiver needs to be on first or the xbox outputs to the tv rather than my surround system, having to use the harmony for on/off at the mo

I know the party chat is borked but haven't really tested as my mates have yet to upgrade to next gen, we used it a lot

Having to pay a premium for wanting a digital future (with instant game swapping by voice command why would you want discs anyway!)

Not Being able to stream movies from my nas/PC

Too small a hard drive and not swappable either (not a problem just yet though still plenty of room for Titanfall just a problem I know I'm gonna have to deal with)

Being told on forums my games aren't good as there aren't enough p's

PS4 I love it and play many games most of which I enjoy to varying degrees but the OS needs to be more fleshed out as others have said. Seeing as I'm sure many of these complaints and omissions are being worked on my major complaint is they weren't in day 1, or soon enough.

PS3 my major complaint is I have to switch my hdmi to use it and a massive growing backlog thanks to PS+, as well as games I NEED coming like Persona 5, and I just want to play those upcoming games on my PS4.

3DS

Region-lock
Sort of underpowered
Account system issues
Probably not a big issue for most people but it's flimsy enough for me to have broken once (granted I was pretty careless)

PC.

Remembering passwords for every online games and services.
Random crashes because you have Nvidia/AMD card for certain games.
Not enough JRPG port...Have to buy console/handheld for the JRPG catalog.

PC - lack of AAA exclusives that are here for the long term

By far the biggest problem with PC. The fact that Crysis 1 with graphics modifications still blows away many recent games is absolutely pathetic.

In 7 years since it's release no one has stepped up to beat it, and it took a 40 million crowd funded title to finally challenge it.

If Valve had sense they would moneyhatting developers for Steam exclusivity with the outrageous profits they make.

Currently:

PC: Late ports, not always guranteed to run smoothly without dishing out more cash on hardware upgrades, not having everything "just work without trouble" can get tiresome, slightly annoying fanbase

PS4: Lack of compelling software, AAA linear "experiences" are considered "compelling software", Bland, barebones UI, so-so build quality, absolutely insufferable fanbase. The absolute worst of fanboys, hands-down.

Valve is about healthy ecosystems though, I don't think aggressive moneyhatting is the way to go.

I just wish whenever exclusivity is lost, it doesn't come as a compromise to the IP like with Crysis. CDPR did it right with The Witcher 2. But it now is no longer a drive to go PC.

My only real complaint with the PC is that it doesn't have a high quality , system-design heavy baseball game like MLB: The Show. It does have OOTP but that's really a different beast entirely.

Not having inane escape from dangerous places AAA games isn't a bug, it's a feature.
