Endless Legend is looking so good

Madly looking forward to this one. I've always loved my 4x space games but I never got on with any fantasy ones despite wanting to. If they can carry the ideas I loved from Endless Space into the fantasy setting then....well good things.

Looking at that screenshot, I am getting giddy at the thought of actually graphically seeing the city develop. Look at those small towers :-o I want to watch them grow into a big city!

Other things that I also like are the different terrains in the game and the UI, it looks so simple and non intrusive.

As per ushe, my ten votes for this month, (almost) in no particular order:

Magnetized: Underdog of the month. Stylistically, it is very similar to a game like *ahem* Impulse, and if the month wasn't ending tomorrow I would push hard for this (like Toma did for that.. other game (actually, it's sort of the other way around where I really like this game and sort of didn't want to admit that Impulse was alright, and now Toma is kinda dismissive of it, even though it hooked him for 50 (!) levels, but make of that what you will :p (i love parentheses))). The mechanic is quickly explained: You're a little dot that floats in a straight line and you have to navigate through a level by activating the magnetic pull which influences you're trajectory. It's free to play in your browser and, well, I've kinda been going at it for for at least 45 minutes now.

Simian Interface: An excellent month for abstract Flash games, it seems. This one is a simple, but very stylish puzzle game that plays around with perspective on a 2D field. Heavily inspired by Fez, methinks. Starts out innocently and goes to some weird and awesome places (you're trying to reboot a monkey, I think? also, drugsbananas and behaviourism?). I finished it in a single sitting. Soundtrack keeps you pumped all the way through. Anyway, if you don't believe me, Panda voted for it as well (he knows what's up!).

Olympia Rising: Quite a promising demo. Wasn't so hot on it when I had first heard of it, but it actually controls super smoothly and the art and music are very well done, indeed. One of my most anticipated projects now.

Dojo of Death: Very simplistic, but also kind of pure in that sense. Solid time-waster.

Magicians & Looters: Pretty respectable Metroidvania with an interesting art style that looks kinda cheap if you only take a quick glance but actually fits pretty well. Catch it!

The Banner Saga: Excellent S-RPG with gorgeous art and an interesting, albeit not too deep battle system. Emphatically recommended, one of this month's (and potentially this year's) highlights.

Sub Rosa: Very janky and probably not that fun to play, but like I mentioned last month, the premise is pretty good and the results potentially hilarious.

From Hell's Heart: Rather intense and surprisingly accomplished for what it is. Definitely nails that Moby Dick conceit it sets out to reproduce, on a smaller scale of course. I'm not as enthusiastic about it as Messo, though not for ecopolitical reasons (lol). The controls are a bit loose which.. is a curse and a blessing, actually.

Env: This doesn't even come close to being as good as Paradis Perdus, but it is still very unique and interesting. I imagine a lot of people have dreams like this. Worth fleshing out.

Permutation Racer: I don't know how this stacks up against something like Race The Sun, but I enjoyed my time with this. Visually it's not half-bad, the trance soundtrack is alright, it controls fine - consider it if you're a fan of the genre (it's free, anyway). Windowed mode is mysteriously bugged for some (including me), so try fullscreen if you're only seeing faint traces of geomtry.

Honourable mention to The Castle Doctrine. Strong concept that gets bogged down by its adherence to itself (to its own design doctrine, if you will).

----

tl;dr: Give Magnetized and Simian Interface a shot.

I haven't played Nidhogg, Octodad or The Floor is Jelly, yet, but I'm sure I would have included them all if I did.

KiloBite is an the next logical step for snake, 3D! A simple HighScore chaser with a beautiful retro look; which can be left on or mixed and matched to achieve a look you like.

Not 100% sure what the rules are on posting your own game, so I'll just go ahead and do it anyway. I'm sure someone's going to let me know if I've done something horribly wrong. I always pop into these threads somewhere near the beginning of the month to take a look at what's been interesting, starting with the next thread I think I'm going to come be more active here; would love to join in the monthly votes!

Noting to worry, it's great when developers post here

Anyway, the look of your game reminds me of qrth-phyl
I'll be sure to check it out later

VOTING

 1. Nidhogg - $14.99/sale $11.99 (PC) - I love local multiplayer games and this is one of the best. It has online too but I've yet to try it. This is a simplistic [sword] fighting game with enough depth to make it enjoyable for many sessions.
 2. Strike Vector - $19.99 (PC) - Another awesome multiplayer only game but this one is an online shooter. You control these mech-like vehicles called Vectors and they have a relatively complex movement system (complex compared to the standard FPS fare) and it feels great to get better at manuevering your vehicles.
 3. Olympia Rising - Free Online Demo/ (PC, Mac, Linux) - This early demo provides very smooth and challenging action platforming mechanics. This game clearly shows promise and I'm glad it got kickstarted despite the rocky path.
 4. Dojo of Death - Free (Browser) - Very simple yet addicting browser game. Rack up combos as you slice fools.
 5. BloodLust - Free Demo (PC) - The developers do an interesting job of REALLY warning you when you try the demo. They tell you how complex of an RPG this is, how you need to turn the tutorial mode on and you can set it to easy if you want and did I mention this RPG is complex? As I started to play it, I thought it may be too rough for me to enjoy but as I dug into it, I really started to see the potential. Extremely rough around the edges but the mechanics seem very fun and this seems like it could be a challenging and fast-paced RPG. I look forward to trying some more.
 6. Lyne - $3 (PC, Mac, Linux, IOS, Android) - This is a competent little puzzler with really nice visual design. It definitely gets challenging but not that I have a couple dozen triangles (you get 1-4 triangles after completing a set depending on it's complexity), I'm pretty bored with it even though there are new sets everyday. Still, it was certainly worth the $3 I paid.
 7. Joe X - Free (Browser) - This game was really interesting. It's a 2D brawler with a moveset similar to a Devil May Cry. The twist is there's only the one small arena-style level and the goal is to get a high score. I recommend hooking up a control pad via xpadder or something to get the most out of it.
 8. Heroes of a Broken Land - Free Demo/$14.99 (PC/Max/Linux) - I didn't get to play this very long. If I had, it might be higher on my list. It was a charming and low-fi dungeon crawler. If you tend to prefer a more modern adaptation of that genre (e.g. Legend of Grimrock) then this may be a little too retro but what I played was pretty enjoyable.
 9. Magnetized - Free, $2.99 (PC, Browser, IOS) - Another simple concept executed very well. It's one of the more innovative one-button games I've seen. You have to guide a "pixel" safely from point A to point B without hitting any walls along the way. The trick is there are "magnet pixels" you can activate by clicking (the magnet pixel nearest to the pixel is the one that gets activated). When activated, the pixel's path is altered in the direction of the magnet pixel. Such a clever concept and again, executed with a ton of polish. It got boring after a bit for me but I was impressed nonetheless.
 10. Permutation Racer - Free (PC, Mac) - This game's minimalist 3D aesthetics are pretty and the race against yourself mechanics are well implemented but unfortunately it's beaten to the punch by Race the Sun which is even better executed. Still very solid, and of course totally free so it might be worth a look.

Screen_8.png

http://www.desura.com/games/magic-book

Looks like a simplified Sidescrolling adventure RPG! I am getting some slight roguelike vibes from it, but I dont think its randomized, will check it out and report back as this looks too interesting to ignore, yet doesnt have a proper description either... other than you can kill dragons.

Pick some objects, drop them on a processing machine, grab the battery generated by the components and put that battery over a energy slot to open the door. All that just to go to the next skinner-box chamber. Ok for a while, but when chamber after chamber each challenge becomes harder and military threatenings shows up everywhere… Bill understands he may never leave that place alive…

Cubesis - €3,69 (PC)
cubesis_new_level2.png

http://www.desura.com/games/cubesis

Cubesis is a turn-based strategy, centered around the fragile balance of the Cubeworld. You can forget about other turn-based strategies, because things work a little bit differently here. You assume the role of Cubies – the inhabitants of the Cubeworld – whose purpose is to survive, that is to have full bellies and “score as much gold as possible”. The way to their dream is beset by many obstacles, however. For example the sea. To overcome these obstacles, you need to figure out what pleases the gods Ikjuch and Likael, and make them dry the sea out (for example).

Walk - Free (PC)
Walk_Screenshot.jpg

A simple exploration game with a beautiful visual style and atmosphere with simple, intuitive controls. Your only real objective is to find the darkly coloured sphere. You and the sphere are randomly placed around the world so each playthrough is different.

Oh god, TrapThem...
That developer is one hell of an annoying narcissist. I had started a thread on TIGForums to discuss the merit of indies, and somehow the thread essentially got hijacked as the developer shifted any and all points towards his game. The thread went from being about indies to being about gimmicks and trends in gaming and how TrapThem is so much better than other games because it's focuses purely on mechanics and other games use gimmicks and other useless mechanics instead of real gameplay and how only the dedicated TrapThem players really understand how good the game is, but people who just play the demo can't see the depth it has

Anyway, I definitely recommend Box Out. I posted some impressions earlier in the thread, but it's pretty good. Adds a nice twist to the usual precision platforming with its swapping mechanic, really ramps up the challenge and variety in cool ways

Actually thats opening another can of worms regarding how much asshole a developer can be, yet still be supported by me with my money for his game. Sort of reminiscent of the whole Phil Fish thing who was being the biggest dickhead developer I've ever read in my life, yet still supported FEZ because its a goddamn amazing game.

And I really gotta hand it to the Trap Them dev... the games really are good. I mean the reason they dont get as much attention is likely the presentation, more than anything else, and its totally not great to go off on a rant like this, but ... the games were really good.

Barring things that disagree with my ethical or moral system, I tend to support talented assholes. I'll buy a Kanye album and I'll buy a Phil Fish game with no hesitance whatsoever. Conversely, I can't stand Chris Brown or R Kelly.

Found some cool games, waiting for the March thread to post about them

On other note, finally sinking some time into Infested Planet (seriously, it was my first Steam game ever) and I'm really enjoying it. The game has been finely tuned and expanded since my first time with last summer. Quite challenging, you're always deciding what's the best use of your limited building points as well as what's the best sacrifice, What's more useful, a turret or a shotgun trooper? Should you recycle a marine to place a minefield at a chokepoint? The randomized mutators always find a way to throw a wrench into your plans and it's quite visually awesome to see your small squad facing and overcoming literally hundreds and hundreds of enemies.

And the large numbers do make a difference. You have to be watching your flanks, controlling chokepoints, because it's so easy for poorly planned defenses to get overwhelmed and overrun.

Voting February!

I did not have much time this month. So far, my vote goes for:
 • Nidhogg: a wonderful way to introduce friends/colleagues to video games. A great laugh.
 • Lyne: it is the core mechanic of The Witness. Nice.

I am going to check out a few games.

While the development is coming along nicely, Painters Guild still hasn't received a new alpha like I had hoped (just checked, and I didn't make that up, they talk about a new version for Feb. on their Greenlight page). Here's some Venice scouting action:

I'll let Toma decide if he wants to include it.

Oh man. Praise the Toma-bot, but my program just gave me these numbers:

66 + 82 games for the next thread, 72,000 characters.

That will take some downsizing.

Must be all the Screenshot Saturday posts...

Easily a new record based on pure numbers. Definitely will need to omit some games, otherwise I cant fit the OP format. I'll try to play some games and omit some less interesting ones, because we cant have this thing growing without limitation.

I guess I'll do less games this month if the excess of posts is too much of a problem. Also some of the games in those SS posts have already been featured (Previously Mentioned). I could only do new games if that's better

Yeah, it would probably help to only include games that we didnt feature yet. Otherwise, you dont need to do "less" games from the other stuff or we'll end up with not enough games next month :p

Lets just see how it works out if you dont include games we already featured.

Toma-bot only responds to a certain post format, no? I think you could still include them without "clogging" the next thread if you format them differently. Up to you, of course.
