Let's Discuss Condemned: Criminal Origins

The one thing the sequel had was slightly more involving crime scene detection, which is something I really wanted.

Everything else was a letdown or a wrong turn.

According to the Wine homepage you should be able to play this using Wine on your Macbook.

I'm pretty inept at these sort of things, is Wine a free/legal install that's easy to do? And would I be able to buy the steam version of the game and use it with Wine?

Well the combat was improved tenfold as well, one of my favourite things about the sequel. It was just more fun to actually play. Maybe not necessarily what some Condemned fans wanted but it suited me just fine :) So much so I still play some of the side games like Practice Mode, Lockdown, Riot Control etc.

I tell you something, more games need a mode like Practice Mode. Select the number/type of enemies you want, weapons you want to use etc and have at it. How I wish something like Max Payne 3 had that type of mode.

The funny thing is that despite the multiplayer of C2 being tacked on and a bit rubbish I had a mate who absolutely played it to death, we're talking someone who doesn't really like multiplayer games that much and hasn't played many since then. He spent hours upon hours with that head in a cardboard box mode. Was funny seeing someone so adverse to multiplayer enjoy that so much. He's never enjoyed anything multiplayer wise as much again either. It's the damndest thing.

Loved this game to bits and it really sold me on next gen when I first got my 360, while PDZ was a steaming pile of crap. I think the darkness and static effects were enhanced even more by the fact I was playing on a SD television at the time and then eventually replaying in HD was magical. Shame we will never see a 3rd game, the 2nd one had it's moments but the plot shit itself towards the end with all the shouting/head exploding stuff.

As Sartre noted in his contemplation on Hell in No Exit, the true horror is other members.
Also, one of the best covers last gen.

Followed up by one of the worst Platinum Hits treatments, in that the side spine of it is blank and neglects to include the name of the game.

Hey everyone, this is Dusk Golem aka AestheticGamer. I have posted on NeoGAF since 2011, and have decided to resign. I have enjoyed posting about horror games here for years, but I no longer wish to support the site and will be leaving for good. I will still be around the internet, I go by AestheticGamer on YouTube, I make games on Steam as Yai Gameworks, and I plan to go by Dusk Golem on other forums. I'll be joining an off-set of the GAF community leaving to try other ventures like ResetEra (Official Twitter for that here: https://twitter.com/reseteraforum ). I hope some of you who read this may consider it, and I plan to try to expose more people to horror games in the years to come. Just not here.

I hope you all are having a good day, and know I always loved the community, and in the end it's the community I'm going to stick with, not the site itself. If you want to follow me, my official Twitter is here: https://twitter.com/AestheticGamer1

Wonderful game. Genuinely disturbing and creepy, fantastic first-person combat system and a decent enough story; until the final act, of course, when it Shyamallama-ding-dongs its way into space.

Damn I loved this game. I probably wouldn't have even played it when it came out if it wasn't for my achievement hunting days (ugh). So glad I picked it up. I liked the sequel until the last hour...

Great game, enjoyed it very much. Oddly enough, I didn't know that it received a PC port. (Back in 2006, I used my PC for work and WoW only).

Thanks for the info, gonna double dip now! :D

Still one of my favorites of last gen! I'll never forget being able to try this at zero hour(xbox 360 launch party palmdale desert) for the first time. This game to this day still creeps me out. The melee mechanics are top notch!
It really feels like you're in a silence of the lambs simulation.

I thought the sequel was decent. The combat was improved as were the crime scene investigations. Bum fight club also stole some hours of my life and was good fun.

There was also the incident with the scariest bear on the planet.

Ethan's 'transformation' was unfortunate and the ending level was a let down but I still think its worth playing.

Yeah. I think the sequel suffered
from"Bioshock 2 syndrome." Better combat mechanics, but somewhat hindered story.

I had to play with ABBA playing in the background in order to cool down the atmosphere enough to finish it. Dancing Queen got me through the mannequins level.

Fucking mannequins.

I lovelovelove this game. I think I'll boot it up on PC again soon, it was so creepy. And first person melee brutality done right!

It's great. Pretty much the same engine as F.E.A.R.

Just beware that it suffers an engine problem with certain mouses. FEAR 1 and Condemned 1 had this in their versions of the game engine. I can't even play either of them with my logitech mouse as they eventually crawl to a halt framerate wise.

I loved (still do) both games in the series. The mechanics are great, atmosphere is top notch, and in my opinion at least, it has a strange story that goes almost into cosmic horror. Really really enjoyed the sound craziness and am disappointed that not many others find it as fascinating as I do.

Such a fantastic game with superb voice acting, great atmosphere and a satisfying melee combat system. The forensic science investigation/puzzle sections were pretty cool and enjoyable. Nothing quite as satisfying as a pipe to the face followed by a kick to finish it off.

This was one of the first 360 games I got back in 08. I'm still missing 3 achievements. The
Mall, school, and house
were the best levels. But once I started getting a hang on the AI's tendency to run away to hide behind a wall to scare you, I would tazer them before they ran away.

The sequel on the other hand was disappointing since it was edgier and even more absurd. I didn't really enjoy it as much as the first one. The focus on more combat, changing character designs, retconning a few things, and VA's made for a different game that just didn't have the same atmosphere as the first game. Flipping the bird in first person was funny. There was probably only one sequence that was good. I've been dying to get rid of the game.

Awesome game with superb sound design only equaled by TLOU.
I remember being impressed by the enemy AI as well, I don't know if it aged well in that department though. Back before Oblivion came out, I dreamt it would have combat mechanics like Condemned... I still wish for a first person rpg with that kind of combat mechanics/physics.

There is something to be said about its graphics as well, the lightning is amazing, I really miss the days of Monolith's own graphics engines, games done with it look like nothing else in the industry.

Thanks for the heads up, feels good to finally own the game on Steam.

Condemned competed with COD 2 for being the best 360 launch title way back when. I remember playing COD 2 and being blown away, so I passed up on Condemned until about three years later.

The game is pure genius, albeit way too short.

Probably the most underrated game of last gen. Simply supurb. And this is coming from a person who hates games with first person perspective.

Such an awesome game and one of the only games that I've ever found scary.

The locker scene in the school made me nearly shit my pants.
Part where they have you zoom in on the guys face with your camera, and then suddenly he's alive and looking right in the camera and grabbing you and shit.
Wasn't expecting that at all, had to take a breather after that part.

That part got me too. Assholes. Lol.

You know, I just finished playing Outlast last night and it game me some Condemned vibes. Doesn't beat it though as you quickly find out the gimmick of that game.

I actually felt like I was being hunted by the AI in Condemned. When enemies would run off to further places in the level it creeped me the f out man.

Woof. That is terrible.

The first one was amazing. It had a very gritty, understated style. The protagonist and his co-workers are real people, not in any way Hollywood. The bumfights are amazing and the levels are great.

I had a friend borrow it and then return it. "What did you think?" I asked. He just shook his head fast and said "Oh fuck no."

The second was a huge disappointment but some of the levels were really amazing, honestly up there with Bioshock. They messed up the combat with arcade combos and the characters got a Hollywood makeover. Such a shame.

I agree with everyone in this thread. A superb horror game, and one of the most underrated games of last gen.

Condemned 2 was a bit disappointing, but it had its moments. The hotel, doll factory, and lodge (well, only the first half with the bear) were all great levels. The investigation parts were much better, too.

Game was amazing. I was really let down by it's sequel though. It was without a doubt a blast though to play. The atmosphere was without a doubt amazing. One of the few games to actually give me a few jumps.

My friends turned me onto the second game due to their enjoyment of the first (which we unfortunately couldn't find at the time and the second one was cheap so we figured why not).

Honestly I loved it up until the
stupid black oil crap
became prominent. I stopped playing after that as the game wasn't as enjoyable for me during those parts but one of these days I want to get around to playing the first game given how much I enjoyed the first portion of the second one.

Also yes, mannequins.

Outlast did capitalize on the same trick Condemned did: showing you something horrible in an adjacent area, and then opening up the way to that area. "Come on in!"

Also, like Condemned, the end was a giant what-the-fuck with the final encounter.

Woof. That is terrible.

I can't even post a pic of my 360 Platinum Hits copy as example because I fucking wrote the name of the game on it so I could find it (copied the font pretty good, too).

Maybe someone else can snap a pic of the blank spine on it and post it. When I first saw it, I was afraid that was how all Platinum Hits were gonna be. Game was scary in meta ways, man. ;)

Really really great game. Sequel was fantastic... until the end...

Would love a return to that style from Monolith but they look like they have their hands full with the LOTR ip.
