I haven't played enough Gaiden to properly judge... but that's probably because I like G so much more. :)

The bosses are INSANELY creative and really use the 3D space as well as a 2D game possibly can. The capture mechanic is also really unique and gives the game tons of scoring possibilities. Personally, I dig the music in G a bit more than Gaiden too.

one day i'll have $100 and have to ask myself: Radiant Silvergun, or Battle Garegga?
it's a tough question

I'm not a fan of any shooting game that forces you to marry the scoring system just to make completion a remote possibility... but I went with Garegga. I'll take medalling over chaining (specifically, Silvergun chaining) always and forever.

You should take that 100 and get Batsugun instead. :)

A 1,000x this! That game is fantastic.

As for the Darius question, I love Gaiden, but never got into G. Maybe it's the wonky 3D of G compared to the beautiful 2D sprite madness of Gaiden.

G. Darius is uh...too difficult for me, I suck at it.

I've 1CCed and even 1-lifed multiple paths in Darius Gaiden.
G. however is just so elusive. The worst is screwing up and missing the alpha beam counter, since usually the bosses have TONS of HP.

Both soundtracks are incredible (slight edge to G.)

If you have an Xbox 360, buy Radiant Silvergun off XBLA for $15. It's a ripoff at Saturn market price.

Man Radiant Silvergun is so good but I have such a hard time switching weapons, navigating through tight spaces, all while avoiding bullets. Shit is so hard.

As a Saturn collector you will always have to get RS. It is jank, though, so get it later rather than sooner. Garegga is way better/sexier/playable/less-treasure-/shit .

Wow, this thread is kind of a gold mine. I was never into shmups as a kid but I bought Ikaruga for the GC on a hunch years ago and utterly adored it, it was the reason I bought a 360 later, and having stumbled upon a dude streaming the PC version last week and seeing it for the first time in a few years I asked myself why I'd never got into the genre any further. I think the time is right and there are so many recommendations in this thread it's going to be fun researching them all.

I'm a little surprised how poorly-served the PS3 seems to be though. I created a US PSN account and bought Mamorukun which I'm enjoying and I have Ketsui on the way but there's not a huge amount else, I'm guessing the architecture made ports too expensive to be profitable? I don't have a 360 and I live in PALland so not all the PS2 recommendations in the OP will be available here and they're probably slow and ill thought of if they are.

There's no real point to this post other than me being excited and wanting to let you know I'm grateful for all the content you've given me to sift through. Cheers!

I like the sega saturn a lot... and probably wouldn't consider myself a collector, but I definitely don't have RSG and never plan on buying it. I'm still surprised the price tag is so high with the xbla version available.

I'm a huge fan/fanboy of battle garegga... so I'll just leave it at that.

they're mostly on 360 because Microsoft supported CAVE/G.Rev etc..
I've read that at the beginning of the gen, Sony didn't want to deal with 2D titles that didn't fill up the entire HD screen. After a couple of the titles were published on the 360, the majority of the niche (both gamers and other developers) followed.

anyway... cheers!

Be sure to pick up Raiden IV (from the US PSN) next month. There's also a PS3 port of Caladrius coming up (retail in Japan). Oh, and R-Type Dimensions is on the Japanese PSN.
Also, there's quite a few shmups as PSX/PS2/PCE classics. The shmup console last gen was definitely the 360 though.

Edit: And pick up Under Defeat HD (it had a retail release in Europe and should be very cheap).

Nice one, cheers! Caladrius looks pretty sweet so I will probably go retail on that and with the discovery that US PSN credit is so easy to get on Amazon these days I think Raiden is a cert too. I actually bought Under Defeat last week and it is absurdly cheap, but it was faulty and needs to go back when I get round to it. Boo.

I have just realised I bought Gradius V ages ago when I saw a good deal on it and have never played it, I should probably do that at some point.

it's easy to fault Shienryu for being conventional, but I can't help but like it. it's pretty, which helps!

OH MY GID

RAIDEN IV... finally... as an EU X360 peasant I'll be able to get the game :'-)

I would have preferred a retail release on X360 (which is basically my shmups machine) but hey, I had lost all hope to be able to finally play the game so I'm not complaining!

What's the consensus: Darius Gaiden or G-Darius?

For me, G-Darius, but just barely.

It's mostly because of the beam, how it's used for scoring, and especially having those fun beam duels with bosses. Absorbing all of Queen Fossil's beams with your own towards the end of the fight and sending it back at the boss with raw, screen-filling power doesn't get old for me.

Also, I find G-Darius is easier to pick up and play, for the invincibility times during use of Beams or Capture Bombs, and power loss on death is less harsh than in Darius Gaiden.

Now I kinda want to grab G-Darius from the JP PlayStation Store, unless there's a crippling issue with it like input lag.

Perhaps I missed this earlier in the thread, but there's a new Bullet Soul on the way?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nzG1H-yM0bM

We've mentioned it casually in passing. There isn't really any concrete news about the game (except who is performing the OP and ED themes). I do find it curious that Asada jumped ship from Cave to 5pb/Mages and all of a sudden their only shooting game is getting a spruced up rerelase. I wonder if this will lead to a renewed shooting game effort from 5pb.

Can someone translate this post for me? Sorry, but I really don't understand what you mean at all.

It's only a VC (NES) game, but give Recca a try if you haven't.

lol I had the wrong tab up, meant to post that in the Sega Saturn appreciation thread. Sorry about that.

If RS was free on XBLA I still wouldn't take it. I'd never play it. That or Garegga? Latter by default.

I prefer G Darius to Gaiden.

PS1 G Darius is indeed crippled by slowdown so badly that it neuters the game's challenge. I wouldn't bother with it. I was able to 1CC the PS1 version, and not come anywhere close to doing that on the Taito Memories PS2 compilation.

Currently waiting to hear if the new Bullet Soul is playable on US 360.

taito legends 2 is an admittedly flawed goldmine. no tate hurts, but it's hard to stay mad about gekirindan, g Darius, elevator action returns, ki ki kai kai, metal black, gun frontier, grid seeker, darius gaiden and layer section 2.

got mine for $2.

Whats the consensus on Xbox v PS2 in this case? I have the PS2 version and via my BC PS3 there is some serious input lag ... *cries*

I brought this up a while back, but the interesting thing about GD is that if you emulate the ps1 version, there is no slowdown at all. It's identical to the arcade version in speed and difficulty.

I'll have to do a comparison sometime to be sure, but the last time I played it on my PS2 (SCPH-90000) while there was still tons of slowdown on parts like Queen Fossil, it seemed to be noticeably faster overall than I remembered when playing it on the original hardware.

I didn't know Taito Legends 2 ever came out on Xbox... apparently it did in PAL regions, but it works fine on NTSC system, wow!

I noticed that a few days ago. I never played BS and I'm waiting for someone to tell me if I should be excited or not...

Bullet Soul wasn't anything incredibly special, but it has a high level of polish, and I found the music to be catchy. I'm excited.

tried the bullet soul demo from the marketplace, seems decent-ish. i'm not too thrilled about games where bullet cancelling is the primary method of scoring, but i might pick up infinite anyway. right now i'm thinking of grabbing ginga force too 'cause people seem to like it. :p

Hey folks, some good news! Myself and shmups forum vet NTSC-J did an interview with several shooter western and world-record holders for the latest issue of Shooting Gameside coming out this month, and it includes an interview with our very own NHK Iconoclast! Details below:

http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=49530

http://gameside.jp/sgs/sgs9/

The new issue of Shooting Gameside, out on March 25th, will feature an article on three of our very own: abschüssig, iconoclast, and Gus! There's also stuff on this very forum, STG Weekly, and more!

All three were very good sports and took the time to answer all the questions we could come up, so please check it out! It's a great read; and it's all in Japanese! Seriously, though, maybe we can work something out where we can post the English originals. I'll let you all know.

Gus groupies will definitely want a copy or two as it features candid photographs of the legend that would look handsome plastered over any bedroom wall.

Thanks to NHK Iconoclast for being a good sport. It took awhile to get the interview published but it's on its way.

So I recently burned a copy of the Sega Ages: Treasure Box collection for my PS2 and it worked but it made my phat PS2 make insane loud sounds and I got scared that I was gonna break my PS2's disc drive. I know the game is on a CD rather than a DVD so that might be the problem. Does anyone have the actual disc (which has the blue overlay) and played it on their PS2? I'd be down to buy it but I just want to make sure it wouldn't freak out like my burned copy.

Worth picking up the Raiden Legacy pack for PC? Includes RAIDEN, RAIDEN FIGHTERS, RAIDEN FIGHTERS 2 & RAIDEN FIGHTERS JET.

No. The games it includes may be great, but the collection is trash.

I don't have a PS2 copy, but if that's an alternative for you, you can get the game as a PS2 Classic from the Japanese PSN.

What system(s) have the best version of the Raiden games? They look fun.

EDIT: Anyone play Jets N' Guns Gold? I remember playing the original years ago. I *think* it was good, but I can't recall for sure...

Word, unfortunately I don't own a PS3. I want to play Alien Soldier without a loud humming/buzzing sound from my PS2. Maybe I'll pick up the actual disc at some point.

The Raiden Fighters games are best on 360 or in MAME. Honestly, if you don't want to play on 360 I'd suggest buying the Legacy pack and just using MAME instead.

For the Raiden Fighters series, just get Raiden Fighters Aces on 360. Flawless ports, online leaderboards, etc etc. I guess mame is do-able as well but honestly 90% of its versions seem to crap itself when it comes to Seibu games.

Raiden 4? 360 (or the PS3 version next month which looks to be a marked improvement)
Raiden 3? Only released on PS2 and PC
Raiden 1 & 2? Raiden Project on PS1 (includes both games)
Raiden DX? Also available on PS1 (In Japan only)

Jets N' Guns is interesting in that you build an arsenal. Weapons are purchased at a store. While money is limited(you can't replay missions to grind cash) you can sell equipment for 100% of its purchase price. So basically you're free to put together a completely different loadout for every mission.

That's the only interesting aspect though, it's a very boring and sometimes frustrating game otherwise.

Once the game loads you can play all you want without the disc. Just boot up Alien Soldier and then take the disc out.
