Many people confuse technical quality with the position of the sun and how wet streets are.
Well I'm not sure what is 'technically' lacking from the recent footage compared to the original footage, but I've always suggested that it could be related to time of day and weather conditions - and indeed there are already people saying that this new trailer looks better than the other recent footage, and the only difference I can see is the position of the sun.
I'm looking again at the 2012 footage, that seamless blend to gameplay where you first see him walk down the street before crossing the road to the club. It was a wow moment for sure. But if you break down the impressive features of note:
- Bokeh
- 'God rays'
- Soft shadows moving in wind
- HDR (not sure that's the right term, I'm referring to the bright reflection of the sun off the road)
- normal-mapped textures
- steam coming from the road, blown by wind
- other objects (e.g. cups/cans) blown by wind
- trees blowing in wind
Which of these features have I seen in the recent footage? All of them, except for the steam coming out of the road.
So how come all this new stuff doesn't look as good to people? It could be a downgrade (beyond the understandable IQ differences, considering that was PC footage originally), or it could be simply because that intro shot was perfectly set up to deliver the wow. The bokeh blend to focus was a great start - it really sold the scene immediately - not something you'd normally get walking down the street in gameplay but something the engine is clearly capable of doing for cinematic effect. The sun was lined up perfectly in front of the camera to bounce a reflection off the pavement and show lots of long, soft shadows, and the wind was blowing just the right amount to make the tree create some flickering god rays. Then the stuff blows across the road moments later, etc etc. There was a lot of density of features that all added to the visual impact. But I have seen
all these things in recent footage, aside from the steam coming out of the road (although I wouldn't be surprised if that has been in there somewhere and I've not noticed it yet).
