So you're telling me... there are people who only liked watch_dogs for the graphics when it was first showed?

Animations, hacking, atmosphere, ambience, lighting, how busy the city was and the incredible graphics were what was so great about it. It was looking like a true next generation of open world games and they downgraded not only the saders and lighting.

What exactly is the point of that comparison video? Why would you compare a beefed up PC build to a console build? Did people seriously believe the PC and console versions would have equal fidelity?

You're being stupid now. Just for you again:

Ubisoft said: Watch Dogs' graphics haven't been downgraded but if anything upgraded since the E3 2012 reveal, especially on next-gen.

It's not us making this comparison, it's Ubisoft themselves. They are the ones claiming PS4 > E3 2012!

For fuck sake. You DON'T know that. Remember how pissed off people were when they released that horrible trailer using Wii U footage? People were pissed of because they thought it was next-gen. If it looks like shit it's most certainly because it's the ps360/wii u version. We all know (should know) by know that PS4 is indeed on par with a high end pc-version of currently released games. If not shadow fall speaks for itself. It won't be that much different from a pc running it in the same resolution. Don't take the hardware argument any further now. That's not the point. The point is that people are so fucking fast at jumping to conclusions. Time will tell. Leave it at that.

Rumor that the PS4 version was downgraded to look similar to Xbox One:

http://furiousfanboys.com/2014/03/ubisofts-deceptive-watch_dogs-downgrade-was-leaked-last-september/

Back in September, a rumor came out that Microsoft was pressuring third-parties to downgrade their multi-platform titles so they would look identical on both the PS4 and Microsoft’s lower-powered Xbox One.
This rumor said a French developer (obviously Ubi-Soft) has downgraded the PS4 version of their big next-gen launch title (Watch_Dogs) due to a “political issue” as to not offend Microsoft, the manufacturer of the Xbox One.
The evidence shown last week obviously indicates that the game has been downgraded, which gives a lot of strength to the rumor from last year.

If they didn't bother to do any research, they probably have no idea what it looked like in the first place and think that the new footage looks fine. But these are hypothetical situations we're talking about. If someone doesn't do their research before the purchase, and all the info is out, then congrats: they have total responsibility for what they purchased.

But I dunno, all of this is just so silly. I'm not saying ubi's in the right for downgrading anything, but at the same time the overreaction just seems so fierce. It's less of an outrage and more of a shame. Here's hoping the game will be great.
People getting mad for this = people providing potential customers more information.

watchdogs reveal show a game that looked beyond anything i've ever seen. No doubt it was running on a beefed up rig.

This new stuff looks exactly like something from infamous 2, so its definitely a downgrade. But i always had a feeling that the graphics wouldnt live up to the reveal

The only big game until now with significance difference was Tomb Raider, running 60fps in the ps4 vs 30fps on the x1. And was published by square, a company more close to sony than EA, for example.

This commercial they just released looks a hell of a lot better than the trailer.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NvCUktx9Cuo

I don't know how to embed videos so there's the link. It almost looks like they just focused on the lighting to show that it is still there. Overall this looks much better, and more on par with the E3 2013 version of the game than the new trailer. I don't know why they would have chosen such bad video for the release date, but this shows it in a much better light.

That trailer confirms another downgrade at the end.

The lovely bumpy parallax mapped brickwork on the streets from the old videos have been dropped in favour of a flat texture.

I didn't even catch that, but yeah that's actually pretty noticeable now that you bring it up. It doesn't look as flat during the motorcycle scene though, only when the cops hit it you can really see the flatness. I wonder what's up with that. I think it does look better than last week.

"Gameplay edited outside of PS4 System"

Could mean simply "We edited the video on a PC/Mac because that's how video editing works" or could mean "Gameplay in this trailer is not from the PS4 but some other source and was edited to look like PS4 gameplay"

I am leaning towards the former because I don't think Sony would do that but you never know.

Possibly meaning that they didn't use the PS4 editing suite to capture it. That sounds about right. Since it is a commercial about sharing, they may want to make sure that someone doesn't believe they can actually edit different clips together like that.

Is this new footage? Looks better (to me) than the footage people are complaining about. And yeah I understood the disclaimer to simply mean that gameplay was from the PS4 version and can be shared but the editing was done externally from the PS4.

Definitely looks better than some of the scenes we've seen in the previous footage but it still gives off a last-gen "vibe" somehow.

New footage is still very, very soft and doesn't look like native 1080P. I'm going to laugh when we find out it's not.

Youtube compression sucks, but throw it into 1080P full screen and compare it to the Destiny trailer, or others. It's a very blury mess in comparison.

I'm getting memories of GTA4 PS3....

Youtube compression is indeed bad.

Hint: Is a sandbox. Every car is the player car XD

Passive-aggressive mocking post structure: Hint: They're going to treat the player car (the one the player is actually in) differently and offer it higher LODs/swap less because it is the subject and under a lot more scrutiny.

Its a shame the game took such a downgrade in lighting and textures over the past 2 years. Maybe it spent too much time in the oven...time to put the game back in the oven.

Way to drop the ball. Now ps4 really hasnt got crap to use for ammo. What a shitty way for "next gen" console to go.

Are you trying to imply, Sony still has no games? Cause if so, you're missing another AAA game coming in a couple of months and you can't expect a new AAA every month.

I understand why people are upset about the overall downgrade in WD
I for one am not angry about the situation but I do semi understand why and believe it is justified.

Some people assume that certain individuals are angry about the lack of awe stunning graphics that WD has resulted in prior to the graphical spectacle it was in the past....

In reality though these individuals are angered by the fact that the previous footage in which they looked at and eventually became inwrapped in (believing it was what they where going to receive at the games launch) was mostly but a lie

Granted this is not a argument if the PS4, etc... could run the said game as that is another argument entirely but rather the fact that people became invested into this game having not only the semi unique gameplay as a selling point but the sheer beauty of the game as well....

These exact people wouldn't mind if Ubi showed off their game from the beginning as the footage that we are seeing now until its said release.... Seeing at it is a cross-gen game these visual would be expected if Ubi showcased it as a tidied up version of a last gen port with extra effects (an example being AC4)

But instead they showed this game off as a a graphical beauty with a semi unique gameplay to boot... A step towards what a consumer should expect when going next-gen.

They advertised their game in press events using their old footage... sometimes claiming that this is what user should expect when it releases on their said platform (in this case the PS4)
Maybe they felt pressure from other graphical behemoths... Or maybe they actually believed that they could of used that said engine on those next-gen devices (and PC) but certain financial situations and delays/deadlines proved hazardous in reaching that goal.

We may never know... but if the former is semi correct and they had planed on using the last gen engine from the very beginning then most angered individuals have a right to stay angry....

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Some people say that people do it all the time and that there is no reason to be angry about the situation.... but still Ubi had many ways to go through this situation

A games journey to its launch is usually long process.... The devs show off the game usually some CG trailers too, gameplay is later shown, and more consumers jump aboard to its said release....

People form hype threads... usually gifs are formed and as we are human beings we become engrossed in whatever visuals or footage that we deem as spectacular and interesting... either it is is the graphics, the art style or the mechanics/gameplay

Humans forget things easily and also wish to see competition.... if we see something from a said game that is deemed in our minds as spectacular then we place are expectations higher and wait for something else to overcome that said spectacle.... not the opposite (downgrades)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now imagine this

Certain devs showcase their game to consumers as an alpha build on a said platform that may or may not improve upon release (but does not decline in overall quality)

VS

Certain devs that showcase a high quality build of their said game only to drastically decrease its overall quality when reaching its release

Which of the two would consumers favour?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Graphics are not the problem here but the way Ubi presented the game in the first place.
Consumers want trust before they invest in something and that said trust was tarnished with WD

There is no problem in showing off your game as a alpha build and/or non graphical showcase and improving upon it... there is no problem if your game isn't a major eye candy...

Is it a benefit? Absolutely!
Is it required to sell a said game? Absolutely not!

Desinty isn't a graphical powerhouse but people are still excited about it.... People where excited about WD but after this downgrade they lost that said trust

If the game suffered graphically and/or if the games previous graphics where a lie... then what else from their said game may be a lie too?

The TRUST is gone!
That is what people are angry about

Agree with everything you've said, and the quoted part in particular.

Definitive Edition for PC confirmed
?

If you have the rig, I'm sure there's little doubt it'll be the best-looking version.

Many people confuse technical quality with the position of the sun and how wet streets are.
Well I'm not sure what is 'technically' lacking from the recent footage compared to the original footage, but I've always suggested that it could be related to time of day and weather conditions - and indeed there are already people saying that this new trailer looks better than the other recent footage, and the only difference I can see is the position of the sun.

I'm looking again at the 2012 footage, that seamless blend to gameplay where you first see him walk down the street before crossing the road to the club. It was a wow moment for sure. But if you break down the impressive features of note:

- Bokeh
- 'God rays'
- Soft shadows moving in wind
- HDR (not sure that's the right term, I'm referring to the bright reflection of the sun off the road)
- normal-mapped textures
- steam coming from the road, blown by wind
- other objects (e.g. cups/cans) blown by wind
- trees blowing in wind

Which of these features have I seen in the recent footage? All of them, except for the steam coming out of the road.

So how come all this new stuff doesn't look as good to people? It could be a downgrade (beyond the understandable IQ differences, considering that was PC footage originally), or it could be simply because that intro shot was perfectly set up to deliver the wow. The bokeh blend to focus was a great start - it really sold the scene immediately - not something you'd normally get walking down the street in gameplay but something the engine is clearly capable of doing for cinematic effect. The sun was lined up perfectly in front of the camera to bounce a reflection off the pavement and show lots of long, soft shadows, and the wind was blowing just the right amount to make the tree create some flickering god rays. Then the stuff blows across the road moments later, etc etc. There was a lot of density of features that all added to the visual impact. But I have seen all these things in recent footage, aside from the steam coming out of the road (although I wouldn't be surprised if that has been in there somewhere and I've not noticed it yet).

I don't get what I'm looking at here. How does the second scene look worse than the first? I'm not trying to be cynical. All I see is they made the helicopter spotlight a LOT more realistic and reduced the saturation of everything...

Or is the first scene supposed to look worse? I cant tell with you guys! Stop worrying about it!

The balls in their court, all they need to do is show a video of the game for PC at max resolution as it currently is. That is, if they aren't shitting out lies.

This thread is getting massive and OP was never updated with the GIF that showed the rest of it? The source described it as a single area that looked bad.
