Media Create Sales: Week 11, 2014 (Mar 10 - Mar 16)

Yeah, Microsoft is probably shipping 500 units for the launch because they are so optimistic.

DS II selling near 6k on the 360 is absolutely outstanding, all things considered.

In what way is 30K on its 4th week "strong" for the PS4? Vita is doing very well considering what it tends to sell. PS4 is a major disappointment at the moment.

A) Supply is constrained almost everywhere
B) "No gamez" is perhaps best applied in Japan
C) Console market is shrinking in the region

With this level interest in the console despite good reasons for consumers not to be, it is WAY too early to call the PS4 a major disappointment right now.

Looks like dropping below 2013 YOY is not going to happen any time soon.
I feel like I'm watching my kid slam home a solid second place in the egg and spoon race on sports day.

My kid that was born without arms and emits an egg-destroying wave every ten seconds.

A drop of greater than 1/6th with not much software to drop it is significant. It's below the Vita's 4 week the mostly of reasonably healthy and most dead consoles 4 week. It's not a good result not remotely.

I never said it was a good result.

I think PS4 is probably doing as expected considering the software situation. I don't think it was ever supposed to be more than a token launch. Just my opinion, though.

PS4 held better than I would have expected this week. In 'home console in Japan' terms obviously.

Wonder if Demo Gear Solid will do it any favours next week.

Dem supply problems, huh?

I don't think many would have predicted Vita to outsell PS4 in its fourth week, that's for sure

I actually think the PS4 is selling brilliantly when nobody has bothered to put any Japanese games on the console.

Seriously, are any on the way apart from Deep Down?

Vita is holding well

3DS is way down fom last year, what rabbit is Nintendo going to pull out of their hat to rescue it?

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
To be honest, I thought PS4 would have been around 20k this week, considering the Week 2 to Week 3 drop. Better hold than what I expected. Still, very bad 4th week historically. MGS will help a little next week (35,000 again, if not 40,000?)...but then, it'll go down and down and down. I suppose it's possible we'll see <10,000 units after Golden Week period, not going to happen in the next weeks, IMHO.

Ah, but excluding DD will X/Y be the first to reach 4 million retail copies sold?

I gather Pokemon X/Y has already passed Animal crossing that according to Media Create is a little shy of 4 mllns(retail), so yeah, I think it is.

I thought Famitsu had Animal Crossing with more than 4 million (retail + Download Cards)... maybe somebody with the actual numbers could help us here :D

It's just slowly but surely replacing psp and ps3, like it was always planned.

Replacing PSP and PS3? You can't be serious...

I don't understand the PS4. Why'd they even bother launching at all without anything to push the system? Even the Wii U had a well-rounded launch lineup (in comparison) to create interest at the outset, later failings aside.

I'm also baffled as to the planning of the PS4 launch in Japan. Why they don't have much to entice customers is beyond me. Was it just poor preparation in general?

What's next on the Wii U chalkboard?

It'sdeadJim.jpeg

There were only two things on there realistically ....Mario and Mario Kart. (maybe 3 if they had bothered to market Wii Fit U).

..and I can't see Mario Kart 8 making much of an impact unless it's bundled with a price cut.

....
Vita should be top for the next few weeks thanks to the games coming.

It's surprising Vita has managed to get so much content from 3rd parties this year in Japan ...and 3DS so little.

Just goes to show how much better Sony are than Nintendo in drumming up support....even when their hardware has been selling a fraction of the competition.

They reshuffled their Japanese studios more than once, Japanese devs have been really poor in the transition to HD in general. Not a good combination.

Because Vita is officially a failure sales-wise, and the PS4 is the second coming of Christ and supposed to save gaming in Japan

People in this thread were very cynical about PS4 before release almost solely because of its lack of Japanese software.

You are right but they were saying that Pokemon X/Y will be the first 3DS game to reach 4 million retail copies excluding digital sales.

I think future Western PS4 games may help. The launch games mostly had PS3 versions, keeping people from upgrading yet. GTAV shows that they have some interest given the right game.

PS4 sales unsurprising. Why buy a console when you aren't getting games for it? It'll see the same random spikes the Wii U does when it gets a cool exclusive game, until Sony can make that consistent. Why's the PS3 still getting the bulk of the cool games in Japan?

You know, it wouldn't suprise me if PS4 got an even better bump than this. It's going to be the platform where the mainline MGS will end up, might as well upgrade now. It's not going to do 6 digits of course but 50k isn't completely out of the question. At least that's how I see it (and I know that Ishin doesn't really help me here). I wish I was that optimistic for the rest of the weeks, though.

Holy shit. I can't believe PS4 is still tracking behind Wii U. Console gaming is dead in Japan.

I agree with the bolded part, but there's no way that the PS4 could've outsold Wii U LTD in 4 weeks here.

EDIT: ahhh nvm you probably meant launch weeks aligned. alright then.

I think Sony knew the PS4 would have a slow start in Japan regardless, and they chose to focus on the markets where they make money instead.

I almost want to say Nintendo and Sony are in the same boat, at least when it comes to Japan. Both seem to have done really badly with their console generational transitions.

I don't think the PS4 numbers is that bad of a drop, it's slightly above my expectation after last week terrible numbers. Good or steady opening for Dark Souls II? That 50k discrepancies between MC and Famitsu though.

Nothing to "prepare" here. Japanese devs weren't ready for next gen, because the console industry isn't really healthy in japan. Things will get better, but not as fast as you think.
Needs more time and more games.

K updated my last week chart

This will be a very slow year, but next year hopefully will be better.

RIP(?) Inazuma Eleven

It looks like the TV anime is ending. Apparently Hino will talk about the IP in some Nintendo magazine, so it might not get LBX'd.

So three 3DS cardass games in the span of one week? Holy shit.

Also, damn, so much for Shin Budokai 3D eh BN? Well it took two Toriko games before they brought a proper game that was a sequel to the MH clone games on PSP to 3DS.

Safe to say Ultimate Mission 2 is going to bring in the big bucks. The original had monster legs for the series. Battle for Z did awful numbers.

Also the scans show screens and they show some kind of comparison between UM1 and UM2, and it looks much better now. But seriously the SAME shot? Is this an expansion?

I don't think you'll ever see a "Shin Budokai 3D". Dimps hasn't put out a Dragon Ball fighter in five years, and I can't see Namco Bandai having them return for that.

The Ultimate Mission games are card games. It's very likely that UM2 will just be the first game with the card packs not featured in that. It'll probably sell very well, but I'm not sure it'll match the first game's success. That one had a lot of cross-promotion going on, specifically tying into the first new Dragon Ball film in 17 years. UM2 will have Kai on the air, but the Boo storyline is less popular than the previous ones, and that content was already included in the first Ultimate Mission.

Battle of Z did do poorly in Japan, but ultimately that's not the main market for Dragon Ball home console games, and it hasn't been that in twelve years. These Data Carddas games have zero international appeal, so the local market is integral to them.

With Project Diva F 2nd out next Thursday the Vita has a good chance of taking the top spot for hardware sales for that week. Unless the 3DS' other piece of otaku bait,New Love Plus+ can put a stop to it.

I see so download cards are counted as digital sales? I always thought they were counted as retail sales (at least looking at Famitsu numbers).

So I kind of just assume what people say is right since I don't really understand the numbers, but isn't the 3DS doing pretty good?

Major decline compared to last year, it peaked very early compared to other consoles. It's doing fine in a vacuum, but if you consider that it's Nintendo's only money maker right now it should be much higher.
