Facebook has acquired Oculus VR for 2 Billion US Dollars

So... why exactly are people hating on this? Outside from being associated with Facebook (who itself has casual games that GAF may not approve of)... I'm not seeing any legit reasons.

Ads and potential Facebook integration. People are worried they'll slowly move it into being interconnected with everything FB.

Wait why is it so bad that Facebook has acquired them? Facebook has loads of money to support it, isn't that better than Oculus which has little to no capital relative to what Facebook has?

Because its an acquisition, not a partnership, or investment. Facebook can turn it into a VR Facebook mill and you see that exiting frontier of VR gaming being eaten up into a social nightmare.

OR needed a partner to have a chance to compete against a giant like Sony or other hardware manufacturer, but... facebook?

I dont know... it could be bad or good, Oculus now has alot of money and alot more casuals will be interested with Facebook name on it but on the other side it´s facebook ...

And 2billions? Why? Does Oculus have super ultra important patents for VR? Oculus is an awesome company but never worth 2 billions.

Get ready for that premium Facebook experience. It's just regular Facebook, but with a premium.

This pretty much makes Sony the new leader in VR technology huh?

Part of me is hype because Facebook not only has the bankroll but also the user base for VR stuff.

The other half of me is terrified because Facebook has the bankroll and the user base. And also because they like to alter things every chance they can.

"Your parents, your grandma, your annoying aunts/friends, everyone joining the marvelous world of VR stalking and gaming. With awesome popular top-quality gaming franchises such as Farmville and Candy Crush using VR technology now your gaming experience would never be the same! Coming Fall 2015"

Ok this is seriously... bad, isn't it?

I guess the good news in all this is that FB doesn't seem to want to fuck too much with their acquisitions lately - Instagram & Whatsapp have remained pretty independent, though obviously it's too early to tell w/r to Whatsapp. Still though, Facebook seems to be taking a more Disney-like approach to acquisitions - own the product and let it stand alone (ESPN, ABC, etc.). If they do that for Oculus, and just fund it and let it grow on it's own, then I'm fine with this.

Big IF though.

For 2... BILLION ? Oh my... I can somehow understand for WhatsApp (hundreds of millions of users which are unestimable data sources) but for a company without any product for the moment... Well I think I don't understand today's economics.
Or some banks are ready for a rude awakening.
