Phil Spencer named Head of Xbox

So why exactly are people so excited? If he is more about games, the damage is already done with Xbone. The console wasn't made to be the ultimate gaming device.

I don't understand this logic.

How does Xbox One's hardware prevent Microsoft from developing more quality first party games?

It doesn't, but there is a console out that goes for the exact demographic that Phil Spencer wants to go after. PS4 has the goodwill, the momentum, the price, the tech. I don't see how MS can turn Xbone around. But maybe they can with the next Xbox, I personally thought there wouldn't be a next Xbox, but if MS goes out of their way to announce new leadership at the Xbox division, I'm starting to doubt it.

The PS2 was less powerful than the Xbox. Heck, the Xbox could do HD on some of it's games.

That didn't keep the PS2 from having some awesome games and being an awesome console.

Adding to my point, the hardware doesn't stop xbox from having great games. It may not be as powerful as the PS4, but it is still powerful and quite frankly if you look back in time the PS2 was not as powerful as the xbox but it is widely considered the better of the two consoles.

Games games games.

While true, gamers nowadays want to play games in Native 1080p now. It's now 2014, & Xbox One can barely get some games at 900p without making compromises in graphics &/or resolutions while the majority of other games are at Native 720p. C'mon. We've all already played through tons of Sub-HD & Native 720p games with Xbox 360 & PS3 already.

Nothing of which either has anything to do with gaming experience or can not be remedied. Why all of a sudden is PS4's tech advantage become the bee all and end all for gaming exactly??

"Gamers nowadays want to play games in Native 1080p now"

I'm preeeeeetty sure they always have.

Dude, I have a PC, and I downsample and up the AA every chance I get. 60 fps is king. 120 is better. Everything about PC games is better as far as HD and all that goes. Maybe I'm biased, but that's how I see it. Consoles really can't compete in the IQ department.

So coming from a guy who has been PC his entire life until a couple years ago when I also got a console, listen, graphics are great. IQ is probably the most important part of that IMO.

but I am a gamer. I'm going to go where good games are, resolution be damned. Yes IQ is nice. But I'm kind of more concerned about the games. For me right now, the Xbox One is looking to have better games
well..except inFamous
. If the PS4 ends up having games I like better, I'll go there.

I can stomach 900p if it means I'm getting good games, and I'm pretty sure most other people can too.

Eh people can change also I'm pretty sure he knows first hand just how much people hated the original XB1 vision.

It's one of the advantages of being proliferate on social media, you get to experience the backlash first hand rather than being told about it.

Absolutely people can change it just always concerns me when people get all excited about a new face because he is "likeable" when it isn't a new face at all and he has been a part of most of the bad decisions we were complaining about last year.

Also enough with the he's a real gamer crap. Mattrick was making games since he was a teenager so he obviously has a passion for it and he still made poor choices. All the power to him in his new post but until we see some actual "change" I won't be rejoicing. I like the wait and see approach:)

Gamers will go where the games are. If Microsoft can offer exclusive titles that are interesting and exciting, they'll be fine regardless of the technical disadvantage. They lost the feather in the cap of multiplatform games are better on Xbox but that doesn't mean they can't deliver terrific first and second party games.

At least when you look at it, they're in a much better position than Nintendo even after all the issues last year because the Xbox One will actually be getting 3rd party games.

Never but this was cute.

However what is up with these responses that see this other than good news? What is up with you guys? This is amazing news especially for Xbox fans. Yes, MS wants to have a global and wide impact but right now please Xbox fans is nothing but good news. Once they get there core fans in check, then they will start to look towards other fans to pull them in. This "I can't see them beating old past stuff" shit is whack. They can, they will. If Sony was able too with the PS3, I have faith MS can too.

I'm saying, why can't we have both? You guys should be expecting more, not less, especially coming off of last gen 8 years ago in which tons of us have already played a lot of Sub-HD & Native 720p games on PS3 & 360, in which we're now seeing a ton of Native 720p games on Wii U & on Xbox One.

I sure as hell don't want to send a message to companies like Nintendo & Microsoft in which it's OK for them to do this by supporting their methods. Native 1080p should be standard nowadays, period.

Happy to hear that he is focused on shifting the message to gaming. I think it was a major miscalculation to spend so much time focusing on media as opposed to games prior to launch. That said, show me some games and I'll buy a xb1 in a heartbeat. :)

If he can implement a significant price drop, sure. $299 no kinect or $350, consider me swayed ;)

Everyone keeps throwing this out there in these threads but why drop Kinect if they have proven they'll add value. $450 with Kinect and a game last week. That's essentially less than ps4 or a limited edition X360 from a year or two ago. With a free Skype camera. Just get it to $450 permanently with a rotating game.

I do think that the damage is done but that doesn't mean XB1 can't have quality first party games, it just so happens that this time after a decade it's the PS that is the more efficient gaming system tech wise.

Weaker hardware/bottlenecks didn't stop Sony from dominating with PS2 and coming back strong with PS3 so I doubt it will stop MS, especially now that they have a figurehead for the brand who actually seems genuinely passionate about games.

Agreed. $450 with game and kinect, that's pretty good value.

Some people genuinely do not like xbox and want to see it fail I suppose, they've done terrible for the birth of their new console but to me all these new refreshing steps are a great thing, this news is really exciting me..the main reason it excites me is because phil is a gamer and he's social with us and he's a straight shooter...I don't know i just like him because he teased phantom dust too :P lol

This is a good start, I hope he has some power to get shit done. I'm buying an XO for the exclusives so I hope they have a good game plan there. I don't care if they develop them in-house or finance a 3rd party. Anything but buying out formerly multiplat games, that's gotta go.

I do, but if Xbox has games that appeal to me more, I'll go there.

Honestly, it's noticeable, but 900p is easily dealt with. At least it's looking like the minimum we're going to be getting is 900p (instead of 720p).

Besides, 900p is a huge jump from 540p upscaled to 720p stretched to 1080p and stuff that we have been getting up till now. It's a huge jump. It could be bigger, but it's still a huge jump. And most people out there don't even know.

I mean, heck, we have console gamers nowadays that say 640p no AA console screenshots look better than 1080, MSAA PC screenshots. Compared to that 900p is nothing. Just a bunch of numbers kids will throw at each other because console warz. Most can't even tell the difference. I don't even see how, but no, they really can't.

The point is games. Yes, graphics are terribly important, but when for the most part it comes down to 1080p vs 900p, if one console has more games that I want, I'm going to go with that one.

Also, your post seems to assume that the PS4 is going to have better games. What's wrong with my liking Xbox games, exactly?

There's nothing wrong with that, I'm just saying that you guys should expect better in graphical quality & in better hardware within these consoles. Tell Nintendo & Microsoft that it's not OK for them to be charging you a lot of money for weaker hardware. We're at the age in which even Smartphones & Tablets have gone Native 1080p & above.

Head of Xbox? I would have expected to hear words like chief operating officer or something. Head of Xbox doesn't sound like anything.

"Didn'tKnowJack"

Read some of the articles like what Kotaku or Polygon have put out. They talk about what his position involves.

Basically, yes it's a very big position. Call it "Xbox Division Lead" if you want.

Well heck, I expected gtx 780 levels of power. ...Or maybe I just really wanted that.

I wish it was better...but it isn't. So I have to deal with it. No point in crying over spilled milk. It's done. The best we can hope for is better games, and as long as we can get that, I can look past a few less pixels.

Though we can be hopeful for the next gen. If Spencer can stay in this position until work begins on the Xbox Two or whatever, then man, only good things can come out of that.

Are people actually acting like he had nothing to do with the terrible X1 launch? The dude is pure MS talking head. You might as well have just given Major Nelson the job.

I would have liked more power (in all 3 consoles, actually) but it didn't happen. I'm not going to pass up games that I want to play though. I love video games, that's why I buy all of the consoles in the first place. I'll be upgrading my PC eventually and that's where I'll end up playing multiplats, just like last Gen. But each of my consoles will still have games that I'll want to play and I'll play the. Because that's why I buy them. To play the games.

I've never followed any of MS xbox division personal due to not owning any Xbox system till 2011 but.....

WARNING SPOILER TEXT CONTAINS FIRST IMPRESSIONS I'VE GOTTEN FROM WHAT I KNOW/SEEN ABOUT PHIL SPENCER YOU'VE BEEN WARNED

Please tell me what makes this guy so great, what has he done?
He seems like a corporate douche with his photogenic businessman shark smile/grin and wearing a range "indie" studio shirts every-time you show up on stage at a press conference

Don't tell me he doesn't also believe in going after "casual" audience -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z2iku7pkbf0

Well ok then, "Chettlar." I'm sorry I didn't read 15 articles on the matter before making a simple innocuous comment. Jesus H. Christ.

Are people actually acting like Jack Tretton had nothing to do with the terrible PS3 launch? The dude was a pure Sony talking head. You might as well have just given an intern the job.

Fixed some stuff for you in there to show how it's the same thing. Jack is now some beloved guy because of how the PS3 turned around, how about giving Phil a shot?

He's been at Microsoft for 25 years and has been heavily involved in all things Xbox (specifically games) for the last 6-7 years. He knows the division and probably has the best sense of what the public wants. Had this job been given to Elop or someone from outside the Xbox division, it would be a recipe for disaster as Microsoft is still trying to bounce back from all the missteps last year.

or you know just read the OP, basically anything Xbox(music, video, first party, third party) he's in charge of now.

Also congrats to Phil, definitely a big step up from the old Donner.

He was in charge of first party launch titles. What part of that was terrible???

Best exec in gaming. Spencer seems extremely committed to gaming and I expect there to be some fireworks during E3. Microsoft is financially in great shape so I expect to see money being spent.

Interesting decision to have Xbox reporting to Windows/software division...

In short term it might just mean more Xbox games for mobile (Windows/Phone), but long term is even more interesting.

If you take the corporate philosophy that Satya Nadella has presented of mobile and cloud first then combine that with Xbox having to report to the software/Windows division, it could mean that they no longer see Xbox's future as primarily console hardware anymore. Similar to Office 365 the next generation of Xbox could be a cloud powered service for Windows/iOS/Android/Mac. The hardware division would only manage Xbox input devices like mice keyboard, controllers, remotes, microphones and Kinect. The actual game processing power would come from the cloud, Azure being the platform delivering Xbox games to most popular mobile devices.

Just look at what Amazon unveils this week and imagine what the Xbox version of that might be in a few years. Xbox could become a cloud powered service; a mobile app for the consumer like Office/Netflix/Skype/Pandora. A disc driveless Xbox could be just the first baby step to moving their console to the cloud.

what is amazon revealing this week?

Is it wrong that people like myself prefer playing games on consoles in which they have better versions of graphics &/or performance? It's why I've gone NES & SNES only. It's why I have the Sega Saturn, Dreamcast, & the Original Xbox alongside PS1 & PS2. It's why I have the Xbox 360 alongside PS3. It's why I'm going PS4 only. And it's why I enjoy Arcade versions of games.

If I had the money, I could build myself a good gaming PC as well. The only games that I would tolerate being on a weaker console is if they're exclusive to a certain console (providing that the games are great, like XenoSaga: Episodes I & III for PS2).

In my view, there were two possible candidates for the job. One was Yusuf Mehdi who was probably the person most responsible for the launch fiasco (after Mattrick) and the Xbox One's initial strategy His subsequent media interactions shows that he hasn't learned from the experience and still subscribes to the original vision. The other was Phil Spencer who's been able to deliver a decent launch lineup and has easily been the best spokesperson for the brand. He's been quick to praise the competition, admit the mistakes made and focus on the gamer. The fact that they went with Spencer shows that Microsoft is now content with Xbox being a gaming platform first and that they have learned from their errors. Going with Mehdi would have been doubling down on a strategy that was ill advised. This should mean competition for the gamer from two companies that clearly know that they need the core gamer to prosper this time around.

What exactly do you want fans to do???? The hardware is finalised and was finalised long before it was announced to the world. And there is a lot more that goes into a console than its power. Software, OS, controller, where your friends are ect are all big decisions to make if you're only going to buy one system, not miniscule differences in graphics (in most cases.)

Are you really so daft? He didn't know what was going on with the console? Please.

Don't resort to petty insults if you've ran out of argument. Nobody is denying he didn't know what was going on, but why do you assume he had any sway, that isn't his department. He is in charge of software, that's what he did, and he did a good job. Don't be so blind as to look at MS as one entity.

personally for me I've always wanted all the console if I could get them, the power thing never mattered to me, I played games back in the day like, Day of the tentacle that blew my child hood mind but i could play Super Mario 3 and love it even with it's inferior graphics, that stuff doesn't matter to me ..like the guy said before we gamers just like gaming...that is why Indie games are so massively popular ..nothing graphically amazing but the gameplay is there...

I'm sure I don't care what you game on, so no, it's not wrong at all. But just like you want the best versions of multiplat games (well, not "PC best") some people prioritize being able to choose from all the exclusives. So enjoy what you like and I'll enjoy what I like, but don't act like everyone is making some grave mistake just because you personally can't stomach Xbox One quality graphics.
