NeoGAF, welcome to .webm - the FUTURE (of burning out your CPU)

They're not going to be replacing .gifs anytime soon until they're universally supported.

Didn't say they would, I just said the use would increase with time. Also, with 4chan and a host of other sites adding support for HTML5/Webm I bet were not far off from Neogaf implementing support. There is no reason not to, smaller files, better quality, ability to include sound, etc.

I've tried this on multiple browsers and have tried various links and my campus network still thinks it's malware.

Guess I only get to enjoy whatever these are during the summer and on holidays, haha.

Personally I also don't think it matters if this "replaces" gifs or not for the general audience, as long as enthusiasts (such as on this forum) can use it to show sequences in actually good quality. The mindshare will increase with time.

That said I don't understand why video instead of .webp is being used, that seems to work without any of these (very nice) embedding scripts. I guess it's nice to be able to rewind and whatnot but eh.

You mean at the browser level? Feels like mobile are the main group that would be out of the loop for now, but even then using mobile devices for gifs is a shitty enough experience as is.

For as relatively tiny number of sites that do hosting and as few tools as there are for doing the conversion, it's picking up pretty quick.

Is there any way to decrease the distance between the screens with the DS emulator? I have never messed around with it, however I think a lot of games could benefit with no gap between the screens, TWEWY, Sonic, Ninja Gaiden, etc
No idea. I've never tried a DS emulator.

How I did mine:

1. I had a video recorded with fraps from some time ago.
2. I had converted that video to mp4 using handbrake.
3. Selected a few seconds from the mp4 video, created a new mp4 video (~23 MiB). Select "seconds" instead of "chapters" on handbrake.
4. Uploaded it to dropbox.
5. Used http://video.online-convert.com/convert-to-webm to convert the video.
6. Uploaded it to pomf.se
7. Posted it in url tags.

Not the person you responded to, but thanks for putting up how you did it. It was the only easy way to get this done. Now I was able to make this (though I'm not sure if it's 60fps or not). Too bad I'm not good at this game, because it doesn't show very much lol.

WebM for NeoGAF FireFox Addon 0.3

New:
Only preloads metadata data and should save bandwidth as well as CPU load. There is a dummy Autoplay property within the addon preferences which does nothing at the moment.

It looks like this:
untitledqis2w.png

There need to be an option to disable auto Loop.

In Firefox (desktop), if you right-click on the video player and mouse over the play speed, the fourth option is.......Ludicrous Speed. I laughed. :)

AHHHHHH.

ITS THIS GAME!

I KNEW I WASNT GOING CRAZY!

This is the DBZ arcade game, right? I can't find any stupid videos of this, and I've been telling my friends about it.

Edit: And now for some reason, I've actually found a video about it on Youtube. Go figure.

Edit: Goddamit. No, its not real, Youtube desc said it wasn't... *sigh*. I swear, I know there was a really nice looking DBZ arcade game, but I can't remember the name of it, nor find any vids of it.

Not sure if anyone answered you, but this is Hyper Dragonball Z. It's a MUGEN demo.

Distance pre-alpha GDC gameplay. 3.85MB for 17 seconds. Not too shabby, seemed to keep the filesize down.

Code:
-c:v libvpx-vp9 -crf 4 -b:v 1200k -qmin 0 -qmax 35 -lag-in-frames 0 -threads 4 -slices 8

Really just experimenting with quality vs size, likely could be better. 2-pass seems the way to go, but haven't tried it yet. It's fun seeing all this encoding discussion on GAF.

Big WebM files are no issue for me, it's just the fact the loading times (instantaneous for me) and quality are orders of magnitude better than GIF which makes it.

Real talk, this trend is absolutely going to die once pomf.se get's their webhosting bill and add limitations on the service.

It's too good to last. We'll need to find another host for all these videos soon.

gfycat. problem solved.

Can someone explain what the difference is between this and H.265?

WebM is Vorbis audio with VP8 video in a restricted Matroska container. VP8 is an inferior, but presumably patent-free current generation (same as H.264) video format. H.265 and VP9 are from the next generation. Encoders for those two are currently under active development, but there's still a lot of work to do before they are ready to replace the current standards.

So this is what I have an i7 for... I can't decide if I want autoplay or not... I feel like it's needed but cpu can get pretty intense with it on.

Gfycat doesn't host the files though, it hosts compressed reencodes of the uploaded videos.

It's like the difference between uploading to something like Tinypic, and something like Flickr, Sta.sh, abload, etc etc.

People choose the latter because it doesn't modify your files and reduce the quality, like Gfycat does.

Use a good video recording software (Fraps, DxTory, etc) to record the raw footage, and then convert it to a WebM using ffmpeg.

OBS works as a free solution, and I've been playing around with it. I really can't get high quality footage out of it though, it washes the colours out and highly compresses the video to streaming quality regardless of what settings I use.

Thx guys!

This stuff is fabulous. Is there any way to get hover to play feature in firefox using greasemonkey or any other extension?

webm's are smaller file size than gifs though. I guess they could try to get ads for upkeep if it comes to it.

Do the source videos for 60fps webms have to be at 60fps?

Trying to make a 60fps webm of my last Witcher 3 one but the source video is 30fps.

You can blend the frames I guess, but it's really better to get the best quality source you can first.

Warning! Huge post! Don't worry, I won't try this again. I think a little benchmark is in order.

2 things

1. Turn on your preferred px (height, width) browser limit. Play vids. Which of the following WebM's looks the best to you? State your limit.

2. Now turn off your px limiter and try again. Which looks the best?

3. Finally, after looking at the spoilers, what do you think the best balance in terms of resolution vs. bitrate (custom suggestions are fine)

All are V9's rendered at 4 Quality from a 100MB/s 'master'
