NPD Sales Results for March 2014 [Up4: FFX/X-2 HD]

Oh so that's why it's at 22 pages already.

Well at least I seem to be mostly right about PS4 and XboxOne right now. PS4 will have a sizable lead in America by the end of their first year, a freaking honking huge lead in Europe, Japan actually seems to be running behind my projections.

I've been told it's lofty, but I do think if Sony can continue being sold out while shipping large quantities they can create their own Wii like phenom. This will take timed price-drops. Don't wait until you've saturated a certain price-point.

I'm hoping for one or both of these systems to be passing 45 million units sold by year six in NA alone. I do expect Sony to have the lead by the end of this year in NA. This will force MS to drop the price of One, and Sony in turn will drop the price of the PS4. Depending on how they do it you could have a leveling off effect for the remainder of the generation. I think a good chunk of MS coming problems are solely on the price of the system. I mean they still did pretty good, but they got outsold with the first big title of the generation launching on their hardware exclusively.

This gen is off to an interesting start though.

Honest question, if both new consoles are selling well and a growth market exists in this new ecosystem, what's the difference if one is selling more than the other?

A rising ride raises all ships!!

I'd rather more optimism in these threads.
Let's foster competition and focus on software which is way more important to us as consumers

I think it is if great all sell well. I just think not being number one in UK and US has a profound effect on MS and their strategy. Just look at how desperately they went for the number one spot in March.

In the 360 era the Titanfall series would have been an Xbox exclusive, now Titanfall 2 will likely lead on the PS4.

MS is built to be in the lead. They don't have the wealth of internal studios to keep up. I mean it is April and literally one game on the Xbone was developed internally, Forza 5. Compare that to 3 on PS4, and soon to be 4 with MLB. They can't even trust Rare with Killer Instinct, twice now, and pulled Black Tusk off their new game to make another Gears.

So maybe the silver lining in this is that they take their great sales thus far and invest more internally and on new IPs. I agree competition is good, and I think that is why many are glad to see MS not in the lead, it forces their hand. The PS4 and Sony WWS would not exist in its current form if it wasn't for the success of the 360.

I have to wonder what sales need to be at to pay for things like $500 million NFL contracts, $100 million R&D for the controller, whatever millions R&D for the Kinect2, etc.

And they had PS4 at 6.9 million before the 7 million figure was announced by Sony.

I know you guys like to shit on them, but they do a decent job with what they have.

You remember the times they guess and are right far more than the times they guess and are wrong. It's just not the way to do things in the vidya games sales business.

Imo North America isn't the problem. Whatever this thread might indicate the XBO is doing alright in NA. The problem is that besides the UK, nobody in this world gives two shits about the thing. Its there where Sony is doing most of the damage. I don't think most of this board is aware how truly aweful the XBO is selling outside their two main markets. It's WiiU level bad!

I feel they kind of ceded that when they didn't bother to even launch in most of them.

That said, you can still get some decent sales out of those two countries, so while it certainly wouldn't be especially good, it's still something they can sell to.

Did you have a response ready if MS won? If so what was it? I would thoroughly enjoy reading it.
Unfortunately, since that wouldn't have been a big deal as most expected it, I could not come up with something funny in the case X1 had outsold PS4.

Also LOL at a large number of people not recognizing the meme and falling for it :)

I'm late! But wow, Titanfall didn't really help move systems at all. Neither did the promotions. I'm actually somewhat surprised that the PS4 beat out the Xbone. Now the question is by how much.

But that's not the only problem. If they reduced the system to $399.99 tomorrow, it'd still be a system in which every multiplatform game is inferior, in which apps are all locked behind a paywall, in which is poorly competing with PS+ amazing month on month offerings, in which is burdened with a peripheral virtually nobody wants anymore, does nothing for games, and still has yet to have even a single genuinely well received dedicated title yet for the XBO. On top of that, policy-wise, they continue to stand by a damaging ID@Xbox policy that is hugely damaging to small indies.

The power difference is the one thing they can't do anything about, so it's not all that useful to discuss it, really. I personally do not see it as a real problem, and I certainly don't see it as their biggest problem (and, again, it's unchangeable, so it's still just wasted breath).

Price is problem one, and Kinect is the major obstacle. Drop it. If then the paywall on certain entertainment apps is problematic, make an adjustment there, as well. But that's a secondary problem, and it's addressable. I don't think the deal with indies is even the smallest blip on the radar.

Start at the top of the list, and the top of the list is price. Work on things that can be fixed.

Good post. I personally think it's a good system but there are drawbacks. Not many people are clamouring for a Kinect, it's not as powerful in the hardware stakes as it's competition aswell as being more costly and they do not have the depth of first party as Sony.

While they may continue to make deals with third party, it may be futile should the current sales trends continue. Third party publishers will look at the sales and simply look at the higher install base.

In my opinion the biggest problem of Xbox One is Xbox One itself. Some at Redmond are probably still getting a pay cheque for making choices that have flattened the momentum it's predecessor built.

What they need are some new multi-million seller IPs. Sony made like 4-5 of them last gen. While the usual Halo/Gears/Forza trio is nice, The only new IP I can see being a huge hit for the Xbox One is Quantum Break.

The website calls their guesses "weekly unit sales." Nowhere does it indicate that these are just predictions.

They deceive people into believing that these are real sales numbers, when in reality they're just a bunch of crap.

On a serious note though, I think the PS4 being the dominant console is good news for Japanese devs, especially the niche ones. They now have the best of both (halves of the) worlds. They can release a game on PS4 and have a larger userbase in the west to sell to, while also having the largest userbase in their home country as well. Unlike last gen where if they released on PS3, they had less western userbase, but if they released on 360, they would get 0 sales in Japan.

do you mean the Vita?

Couple of thoughts. If these results don't put Microsoft into Defcon 1, then I don't know what will. The only way they turn this around is going nuclear. Kinect or not, the primary SKU needs a substantial price drop. Even then, I think that only stops the bleeding for the short term. Sony has played all their cards right and has maintained the momentum since launch and there is nothing in sight that looks like it could change the current market performance.

Titanfall numbers look to be solid. For what was essentially an XBO exclusive it looks like it did great but not megaton numbers. The IP has proven itself for future iterations.

Suckerpunch nailed it with Second Son and numbers look to be stronger than Sony probably expected when it was greenlighted.

Dark Souls II has a solid open in the Top 5, but it is kind of disheartening to see it fall below CoD: Ghosts which is in its 4th month. Sure it has legs, but I still thought DS2 would fare better. Perhaps the lack of PC sales for the month was the difference.

It's not even price that's mainly preventing the sales parity it seems. They were practically throwing it in the bargain bin this month with what amounted to ~$100 discount at several major retailers and still couldn't move more than the PS4? With 1mil a month, sony is likely moving at least 2:1 over the xbox WW. That's probably being generous as it seems dead in the water outside of the US.

There's no mystery here: Titanfall sold well, but it simply wasn't enough of an attractive game to the average consumer to overcome the negatives the Xbone is saddled with, particularly a (still) higher price tag, no Kinect-less sku, and a weaker system than the less-expensive PS4.

This is the truth. Titanfall likely would have been one of the biggest new IPs, if not the biggest, ever if it launched on Xbone, PS4, PS4, 360 and PC like it should have.

Titanfall just wasn't the super special game of the century that MS was relying on to boost Xbone sales.

Brazil is also Xbone country. And Brazil is a huge video game market nowadays.
We'll see if that market also will elevate consoles.

But I can see the landscape changing here. Xbone it's winning here because it launched for half the price of the PS4. Now in the grey market they both cost basically the same.

Comparatively, the PS4 has some pretty big console exclusives coming soon in MLB The Show and Planetside 2 (I really think this game will make a big impression among console gamers)
Well if anyone liked MAG, they will get to see a hell of a lot better rendition of it. PS2 is my main multiplayer game now.

Nintendo's silence is even more deafening when you consider that for March they had the "get a free digital pokemon game" promotion all month. Through Club Nintendo, but still.

As consumers, people should be pretty excited about Microsoft getting their asses handed to them by Sony. Microsoft has a history of being pretty awesome when their backs are against the rope, and hopefully that's the case here. My only worry is that we won't see the fruits of Spencer's labor for a few years, as was the case with Sony last generation. Should be interesting to see Microsoft's gameplan moving forward. The only thing that might royally fuck them over from a first party standpoint, is the possibility that it'll basically be Matrick, Balmer and company's gameplan that'll be guiding the XB1 for the next 1-2 years.

Zune begs to differ.

Not calling in to question anything. NPD is a perfectly valid metric for comparison, but, by their own admission, their numbers do not represent actual total sales of these consoles because they do not have access to the point of sale data for all retailers. It's not like XB1 magically sold an extra 60k units at smaller retailers while PS4 sold none.

Software sales is a whole other issue. The lack of Digital sales data, at this point, is becoming a significant skew.

Right, but its also like polling, or like the federal job report data. Accuracy comes because of statistics and science. They don't have perfect data, but they have enough to get accurate counts and more importantly, to analysts and investors, trend lines.

The point is and never will be to accurately count every single item sold. It's simply not needed, and it doesn't bring into question the validity of the data they do have.

Unless there a major cooking of the books going on, there's no real reason to question their data (which is paid for handsomely might I add, hence why we get leaks and others pay to see it).

nothing to add. ms, for whatever reason, opted to put all its eggs in one basket this gen. huge error...

i'm assuming that they did. the result of what is essentially a flat month is actually a boost you're seeing for the xbox one. sales almost always decline from february to march.

Everyone believed Titanfall was systemseller bro, even after the poor performance (60fps is king debacle) on Xbone, and the deafening silence of EA/MS, even to this day of it's precise performance. Still 95% of GAF predicted a win for MS for march due to Titanfall.

This is the game from the makers of CoD.

It definitely sold systems, the question is how many. The Xbone is really unattractive hardware and people would rather get TF for PC or 360.

Saying the game itself underperformed is pretty early until we get the numbers for the bundles/Xbone/PC as well as the 360. It beat out an established quality franchise release.

To be fair, 3DS sales seem to be slowing down all around this year.

Hey look, someone else gets it. Price isn't the issue, the absurd deals this past month showed that. You had Target selling the X1, Titanfall, 1-year of Gold for $449.

Then you have some people saying they would jump at a Kinect-less SKU if it was $379-399. You can do that now.

I like the recorded accuracy too. can't beat up to 7 significant figures on pure guesses.
