The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Game Delayed Indefinitely for Xbox One [Up: Released]

This close to release, the game has to already be printed on a bunch of discs. A bug wouldn't make them pull and delay the game, they would just get a day one patch ready like devs do for everything these days.

Maybe it's a power play, I remember Kotick publicly saying if Sony didn't do something drastic with PS3 he'd pull support. CoD is still their golden goose, and it's DLC and marketing is tied up with MS, he has a reason to be miffed.

I can see this being the case.

Depends on how serious the bug is and the tolerance level Microsoft has for them. If it's some crazy thing that can screw systems then that's an absolute priority to stop the release of or face a much more serious fiasco. Something that just keeps the game unbeatable or from booting up though might be more of an issue for if someone can't patch and thus is stuck with a defective product, full stop. Performance and similar though is a relative non issue, at least it's still playable even if suboptimal.

They paid for the deal. It would be pretty immature to start removing support and throwing a tantrum because you are forced to stick to a contract you signed.

The fact that they already spent the money developing the xb1 version makes this even less believable.

It most likely didn't pass cert. It's not that complicated.

They won't have printed Discs, it will have been delayed the day it went gold., Just as Watchdogs and Driveclub were. The reasons why could be anything.

I assume that MS has a clause that all games (XBONE) must use Kinect in some manner so I'm gonna venture a guess and say they didn't program any Kinect functions.

I seriously doubt it's moneyhatting or performance issues.

Since we're all talking crazy conspiracies, I'll add mine.

Sony moneyhatted the game to include exploits that allowed non-approved code to be ran and thus opening the door to hacking, homebrew and eventually piracy!

My hypothesis:

Bug in Xbox One version that would necessitate delay in Bone version only
MS gives Activision the big ole release day parity buhonkus
Activision says fuck that and cancels the Bone version not wanting to completely delay a game on all systems that is timed to release alongside a film

Just a hypothetical here:

If instead of "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" the title read "Destiny" how long would this thread be right now?

For whatever reason the Bone version wouldn't make it on time, so they postpone it for now or forever, whatever.

Next up. Destiny.

Nah, but not a big game so no big deal.

GAF would crash.

That seems like the most likely explanation I've read, couldn't make launch and the MS policy prevented a Delay on just the XB1 version.

Or you know there's a bug and Activision doesn't know when it will be fixed so they don't put out a new release date with the delay announcement. Seriously. The work on the game has been done.

It has already been mentioned that the MS launch parity clause is for indie developers, which Activision is not.

Over on Reddit when asked about AS 2 Major Nelson palmed it off as a publisher issue.

If this is true and he knows nothing about it, then what about this.
We are working with Microsoft in an effort to release The Amazing Spider-Man 2 video game on Xbox One,

So either he's out of the loop, or not talking about it. The use of "Working with Microsoft" would suggest it's either a system issue and they need MS help or a parity issue and they couldn't get it ready in time.

Just because the parity release date clause we know about pertains to Indie devs, it does not mean they can't do the same on a game by game basis for major publishers. Especially for a release closely linked to a Movie release and the free promotion that comes with it.

Interesting. So MS is saying its purely Activisions fault.

Well they could delay it temporarily and say 'It failed MS QC, we're resubmitting' but it's being delayed indefinitely, it's been taken off the marketing and preorders have been cancelled.

With Watch Dogs WiiU it was "delayed infinitely" for a while until Ubi said Fall 2014. These sort of things happen.

Really weird when it's out on Wii U but not Xbox One. Doesn't paint a good picture for missing it, regardless if it's not a heavy seller.

Technically game breaking bugs ARE the time for indefinite delays, because you have no idea how easy or hard that'll be fixed. I recall FFI&II on GBA being hit with indefinite delay that sorted itself out within a week or so. Indefinite just means "not definite" ergo they don't know how long it'll take.

It's quite unusual for a game-breaking bug on a multiplatform game to be platform-specific, except - maybe - if it's running on the weakest platform which just doesn't have the resources to handle it. I would be surprised if there were significant differences (beyond "a few more effects turned on") between the One/4 and the 360/3/U versions here - the nature of shovelware - so I doubt lack of hardware resources is an issue.

Oh, bullshit. There are so, so many aspects of consoles that are different from one another (even if we are in the early days of the platform where variants are rare if nonexistent) that any number of errors can go wrong with your product on any platform. Middleware/cross-plat engines and standardized APIs make things easier to manage, sure, but it's still a minor miracle that games are not buggier than they are today, particularly when we're talking a multiplatform game that might split the testing pool.

Not interested in the game at all, but seeing big publisher 'delay' the game just like that on Xbone, you can tell they don't put much priority on the system at all.

You wouldn't see publisher delay/cancel one of the biggest selling franchise on the PS2 or 360 in previous gen this last minute.

When and whether ASM2 is released on Xbox One is TBD.

Except you know, the whether it will be released stated by Activision, If it was a bug there would be no "whether " in that sentence.

What are the sales numbers for spider man games?

So the game is already done and yet Activision decides to cancel only the X1 version? That's a very strange procedure.

This game is definitely on my radar. The game looks decent with potentially awesome moments.
The whole Spidey being trained a bit by Kraven the hunter is very intriguing.
The gameplay footage I saw however did show what looked like a choppy frame rate and sub 30 dips, especially in the Peter Parker sections.
I'll be checking for the DF performance analysis, and if the final version is solid, I'm buying it :p (PS4)

Ruh roh, bad news if the Bone starts losing games no matter how bad they are.

This. Microsoft needs to find a way get more people on board, as Xbox One's sales have been tapering off outside of America since January.

It took them 4 months after December to get another 1+ million in sales, while Sony's been racking up another 3+ million sales for PS4 in that same timeframe.

As an Xbox-preferrer and a die-hard Spider-Man fan, this news and subsequent radio silence is messing me up.

I wish someone would either just say, "It's not going to happen," or, "It's a bad bug clean-up. We just chose our words poorly. It's coming."

Anyone in my situation coming up with a new plan for what they're going to play on? I'm going back and forth between the 360 version or the PS4 version. I'll ultimately double-dip if it is released on the One, because I prefer the One's controller, and web-swinging in Spidey games is one of my 'zone out and relax' activities. I can't stand the PS4's controller, so I'm leaning toward the 360.. but buying the last-gen version bugs me (even if it was developed on last-gen platform.)

Remote play is also a strong argument for PS4...

At the end of the trailer, Xbox One is listed, so maybe it's not cancelled just delayed.

Same boat. Huge Spidey fan, been collecting Spider-Man comics since I was a wee kid, and I've played all the games. I'm pretty pissed off at this (indefinite) delay. It's frustrating that no one has even properly commented on the issue as yet. No word from either publisher, developer or MS. I was hoping to play it on the XBO, but I guess I'll have to play it on the 360.

Interesting find.. if this trailer was released this week, surely it would've been scoured over by the same people that removed Xbox One boxart and ability to pre-order from the game's main website.

Hmm have you used remote play before? The controls for it are going to be objectively worse than using the DS4 or XB1 controller. I don't think I'd mind it but if controls are such a big thing for you I'm not sure how remote play would be a boon

Point taken.. It wouldn't be for primary play, but I travel for my job sometimes, and having the janky controls of remote play is still better than nothing.

I found it a fun challenge to play Infamous Second Son from hotels a few times. Nothing near the experience on my home theater setup, but better than having to play phone games. =)
