I think Microsoft's problem has been the fact that they keep getting pushed against the wall in every consumer electronics market they try to break into. Why can't they bring their A game to start with?

Ballmer knew how to deal with corporate clients & infrastructure, he didn't know how to deal with the general population. Combine that with wanting Apple margins without knowing how to deal with consumers, you get all the blunders that have happened over the past couple years.

More like they keep trying to push on a wall. MS has a track record of being LTTP on tech.

Seems like par for the course on VR as well.

Wow is all I can say. Titanfall just wasnt a system seller that ms hope for.

Guess everyone should have knew something was up with the titanfall bundle firesales.
It can still be a system seller, it's just selling systems in months other than its launch month.

While Sony would be very smart never to give up the price advantage, and they should be able to manage that unless MSFT prices irrationally, due to lower BOM and better cost reduction curve, a parity Bone price would probably just pare the losses for MS in the States.

Bone is fundamentally inferior hardware and crucially that knowledge is now public, coupled with public awareness of the DRM-nightmare vision that MS tried to usher in. Where it isn't public we have early adopters repeating it everywhere.

The Bone has to be to be cheaper than PS4 to stand a chance of not being 2-1 LTD. Price parity is 2-1. Always more expensive - we are easily looking at 3-1 here if not more. Exclusives matter almost jackshit since the biggest games are all multiplats.

Remember PS3 still sold 360 worldwide at a higher ASP despite ALL of the advantages the 360 had. Microsoft has no pricing power here, a rigid adherence to a belief in parity is not going to work for them. We have prior data. They do not have the brand to pull that off, they are not premium or considered in the same ball park world wide to belong in the same price tier as a PlayStation.

PS4's performance so far should not come as any great surprise.

MS is going to blow people away at E3.

Price drop to $399
Gears of War announced + release date
Halo 5 announced
Forza 6 announced
Quantum Break release date
Exclusive content for X game
DX13
Kinect 3.0 software upgrade
Jesus makes an appearance (megaton, we've been waiting for this mofo)

How about engaging an argument with some depth of your own? There's a difference between consumers winning and the company at hand winning. Sometimes both come out ahead, and sometimes only one of the two do. It's possible for a company to put out a thoroughly quality product that consumers enjoy (or those that actually purchase it), while simultaneously not seeing a return on their investment. The Zune HD was such an investment. I'm not even sure what you're trying to argue at this point. The device reviewed well across the board, but failed to carve out a meaningful marketshare. It was a critical success and a sales failure.

There's a difference between preference for having a first place system with profitable revenue stream over having a second place system that provides profitable revenue stream. And willingness to sink further large sums of money into having a first place system, that may no longer provide a profitable revenue stream.

This.

MS needs to work on it's Europe situation, but other than that their strategy seems to largely be working for them. Xbox is profitable and experiencing growth. Don't know if they should sacrifice that just for the right to say "We're first place." At the moment, there seems to be a lot of money in second place.

NPD released

PS4 60k more than X1 despite Titanfall + Hype Machine overload + unofficial price cuts

GAF explodes

Bish exits his bunker

Dent and Kuchera question NPD validity

GAF laughs

Sony announces 7 mil WW "sold through", Microsoft announces 5 mil " sold in" (or shipped)

Verge takes it to mean the same thing, states that PS4 leading by 2 mil

GAF laughs

1) Microsoft released PR

2) NPD released PR, Titanfall #1 best selling for the month, #2 highest-selling Xbox One game

3) Xbox One - 5 million shipped, a lot still sitting on shelves. Contrast that with PS4 - 7 million sold to consumers, where sold and shipped are pretty much equal.

4) Arthur Gies / Ben Kuchera from Polygon question the reliability of NPD, but their claims are unfounded and completely disregard Microsoft's / Sony's / Nintendo's veneration for the numbers

5) Nintendo still hasn't released PR

6) Xbox One - 311K, down on a weekly basis from last month

7) 360 - 111K, also down from last month

8) PS4 - Highest selling console this month, ~60K higher than Xbox One according to Thuway

9) 360 is the best selling 7th-gen console, so PS3 and Wii sold below it

Thanks to you both, I really appreciate it!

Regarding the price drop, i don't understand the need for it right now. PS4 is selling well for what it's priced at right now. A price drop from MS might be coming for sure, but i don't think Sony will follow suit, not until after a while.

We will see how many Xbox One are moved after the price drop. If Xbox One starts to overtake PS4 after drop, Sony might start considering it as well.

Clearly a price drop is coming at E3. I expect some crazy moneyhats as well. I hope its nothing I want because that will bum me out I guess. Microsoft executive Panic mode is officially activated!

You are not going to get a better deal on an X1 than the ones that have happened during the past month. Unless you are expecting a $349 price point with Kinect, which is not going to happen.

I agree, no way Sony drops the price this early. I'm still not 100% on a XBone price drop.

Considering the mostly stock components inside the system, the console being sold at a minimal loss, and how aggressive they have been in this launch, I could see them doing a price drop if they sense Microsoft is about to do one. It would be like blood in the water to them.

I don't know if there's much to suggest that Gold subscriptions are converting to PS+ subscriptions.
The silence would make one presume that it's down year-over-year.

Expect it to snowball as 360 owners switch to PS4 and begin canceling their live subscriptions. Unless they also buy a XB1, I don't think many will want to pay for 2 online services.

Sony and Ubisoft have the best strategy. Just keep delaying your games! The anticipation brings all the boys to the yard.

The transition from the Xbox to the Xbox 360? Windows Vista to Windows 7? The latest incarnations of Windows Phone? Zune HD? Hell, you could even make an argument for the Xbox One at its reveal and right now. Windows 8 is looking to be making a similar rebound with the enhancements of Windows 8.1 and the retooling of the Start Menu in a near future update. All of this is pretty damn recent too.
All I get from this is that the next Xbox has an equally fair chance of being another disaster.

But at least there's still a chance for the Xbox One to be as good as the Zune HD!

It won't be instant, but I agree. At least $50.

Although if XB1 gets a Kinectless SKU it should be cheaper than a PS4 by default.

That would be admitting kinect is a failure. And as far as I know, it's very much apart of the Xbox one experience
