Things You Seen/Interpreted Wrong In Video Games (AKA Agahnim As Per GAF...)

We all know the famous Agahnim As Per Gaf image (I think it was Jarosh that did it?):

Well I was doing some work today with the 8-bit Goomba sprite and I always saw it as its body is a beak and its like a giant bird face like so:

And then I was playing F-Zero VC on Wii U and I remembered when I was younger I always seen the city beneath the track as like underground, exposed electric pipes and wires that just didn't have tarmac over them:

What things did you see completely wrong? Are there any in any modern games?

Mellahan

Concerned about dinosaur erection.
I misheard something vital in Mega Man 8. You know Frost Man's stage, right? In the second part you're given cues when to jump or slide on the snowboard thing.

Welp, ten-year-old me kept hearing 'slide! slide!' as 'FLY! FLY!'

I spent minutes trying to figure out how to 'fly'. I pressed every button on that controller, I tell you. Rush wasn't around to help. I was certain Beat couldn't pick you up, either. I simply couldn't fly.

Some years later I figured it out. Slide. Sliiiiide.

Thanos acquires the fully powered Infinity Gauntlet in The Avengers: Infinity War, but loses when all the superheroes team up together to stop him.
Actual representation = My interpretation

Diddy's Kong Quest = Diddy Kong's Quest

Agahnim has a hat = Agahnim is a green haired guy

Vile (Mega Man X) looks like Boba Fett = His arm cannon is his head

The green sumo robots from MMX have their eyes in the center of their body = Those are just chest lights and his head is tiny and on top of the rest of his body

I always thought it was Samurai ShoWdown.

It's Samurai Shodown.

Also, working at a game store I hear Virtual Fighter and Residential Evil.

I also twitch whenever I see anybody say/spell Laura instead of Lara.

Apparently this happened
I have no idea what I'm looking at.

For me, I always saw Link's shield in Zelda 2 as his sword, as though he were holding it straight up and down.

The impression stuck for yeeeeeears because all I ever saw of the sprite were little pictures in Nintendo Power when I was a kid. I never saw the game live until the 3DS ambassador program.

Everything in FFVI apparently. I was nine when it came out and now I play it and see things much differently in the sprites.

Yoshichan

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?
Blizzard's icons are very very confusing.

What the hell is this?

RECKLESSNESS!!!!!!

lol agreed, WoW icons confuse the shit out of me but it's not like I really try to figure out what they are.

One of the endings of Suikoden 2 shows an image (which I can't find) of Jowy sitting alone at the meeting point from the start of the game. The way his boot is angled made me think he had a pirate style wooden leg when I was a kid, kinda bummed me out lol.

Always thought that the eyes were the red things.

Wait, are you sure? Bulbapedia says you're wrong:

Armaldo is a bipedal, amphibious Pokémon, somewhat resembling a mantis shrimp. It is covered with thick, grayish-blue plates. There accents of yellow, black, white, and red throughout its body. Its oblong eyes protrude from the sides of its head. A black pattern with two red, teardrop-shaped spots covered the center of its head and a yellow lower jaw. Three pairs of wing-like appendages extend from the sides of its long, thick neck

EDIT: My bad, I misread your comment. I thought you were stating that as a fact.

On the topic of pokemon:
The front of Metapod is actually on the left. The thing on it's back is some sort of spike, not a nose. Like this:

You just blew my mind OP. I never realized this wasn't the case :O

SovanJedi

provides useful feedback
I remember when I saw screenshots for Castlevania IV for the first time and I saw this enemy:

...I thought it was some strange beetle doing cartwheels.

Go nuts. Kakuna was the one that gave me the most headaches; I thought it was actually reaching out its claws to attack when the sprite art is supposed to be a Beedrill emerging.

I thought Amarant's beard was a duck-bill and Amarant was some sort of duck creature, looking directly down.

What the hell is this?

It always looked like a weird red shoe to me.
Studying it closer though, that's probably a red sword cleaving through metal. (or a person -> grey shirt, red blood)

EDIT: yep, that's a person and the sword is red with his blood.

Watch Da Birdie

I buy cakes for myself on my birthday it's not weird lots of people do it I bet

It's not just you, Amarant's character model looks damn weird. Like a chicken or something.

Same with Freya, I always thought the holes on her helmet were his eyes and she was wearing armor that covered her face or was a weird dragon creature (thus "Dragoon"), as opposed to a rat.

Pancho

Not with sprites but it happens to me with names a whole lot. I beat Dark Souls 2 today and it wasn't until the end that I realized it was Drangleic and not Drangelic.

Wracraft 2 peon.

I thought he was some smug guy with like a green elephant trunk facing forward and glancing smugly off to the side.

On my first playthrough of Tales of the Abyss, at the end I thought
that Luke and Asch both died and that the "Luke" that came back was another replica made by Jade.
Fun times.

That and of course Metapod, I will never be able to unsee the angry nose face.

It wasn't until their were pictures floating of Quote in the Wiiware update of Cave Story that I realized that Quote is not facing the side of the screen, but is actually facing the player at a slight angle.

That green pixel line on the right is not his nose, it's his other antennae, and that blue pixel line on the left is not his ear, it's his right eye (left from our view).

And I think I thought the other antennae on the left was a pony tail thing.

TBH, I've always preferred how I used to see him, his original sprite looks REALLY derpy to me now that I'm looking at it correctly.

Never saw it the way you did, but I needed to see official art to see the antenae

Sprite does look kinda derpy, but I likeit. Quote's artwork design though is boss

On Metapod, I didn't see angry nose until someone pointed it out. That was a mind-blown moment for me, although I stuck with the original way I saw it as being official

Maybe because it was on a blurry CRT back in the days but I could never see Rachel's face in FF6, I keep seeing some kind of mask thinking it's a breathing device.

This is probably what she must've looked like to me when I was a kid:
