Team, Item, Class, CPU, CPU Machine, Course Race Count is not clear. The second-to-last setting is whether the courses are chosen randomly / you choose them / they're in order, and the last setting is the number of races in total.

It's pretty likely that there's more characters than just the three question marks, since Mario Kart Wii and Mario Kart 7 would shuffle the character selection screen around until you unlocked them all.

Truth! I don't remember ever using the babies from previous games in the series. They're annoying, too tiny, and make weird noises. I mostly (if always) use medium-sized characters.

I don't like the character selection screen at all. Its just... bland. Idk. Not like it matters really, but still, the presentation so far has left a lot to be desired, at least compared to past games imo.

It all reminds me of the awful Playstation All Stars Battle Royale UI.
