Mario Kart 8 Info Thread

Not sure what you mean...Do you mean that all the coins collected by all the players go into a community pool to unlock new things? That has been confirmed, but I can't remember where...

In previous games where you could play the GP mode with multiple players, you could unlock characters and such exactly as normal.
Worst case scenario : only the player associated with the NNID the game is played on gets its coins added towards the total count, in which it's the same thing as playing the game alone anyway. You shouldn't be worried too much about this.

Basically, 4P GP from the beginning even if it doesn't unlock stuff makes this a co-op game. Without it, it's mostly a VS game (although I was happy to see the Team options in MKWii). Being able to unlock stuff is icing on the cake, but I much prefer to unlock stuff with a co-op feeling than from single player only. MKDS was the last time I was excited enough about a MK game to play it a ton single player; MKWii quickly became multiplayer only (I'm not sure if I even bothered unlocking every Grand Prix for 150cc) and I completely skipped MK7. I am only finding out now that track design and kart differences/viability had started to get better when they added gliders and underwater sections. a number of the tracks I've seen in MK8 now impress me with route options that make even off-road tires useful at times, anti-grav collision boosting that makes weight even more of a consideration, and track design that reminds me more of Crash Team Racing than any previous Mario Kart. So I'm excited, but if I can't immediately sit down with friends, play GP together, and unlock stuff all at once I'll end up a bit tempered with my excitement. It's not a deal breaker on whether or not I'll have fun with the game, but more of an issue of how much trudge I'll have to deal with solo in addition to the multiplayer fun.

I'm generally a co-op maniac and even refuse to play Tales games alone.

Yeah I was talking about unlocking grand prix and 100cc/150cc/Mirror modes.. maybe even stamps

Are the screenshots on miiverse etc compressed or from the gamepad? I only ask as there's a couple in the screenshots thread that look pretty rough and are getting some hate.

They are taken from the browser. MK8 is gorgeous but it shows a lot of aliasing in screenshots. I posted some official ones in the thread so that people could see that there was no difference between the screens that were taken and the ones Nintendo released. Here's my post:

Don't know what screenshots you've been looking at. ALL of the screenshots released by Nintendo had aliasing. Here's a few examples

I'm guessing that you've only ever seen video or probably GIFs of it, otherwise you would know this.

And like everyone else has said, this game is gorgeous in motion.

People just never really noticed because the game looks that good in motion so it comes as a surprise when they see the screens.

from videos the Mii racer is growing on me but I think the helmet was simply because they did not want to render all the crazy hair combinations still don't like the helmet as my eyes keep focusing on it and not the road

maybe playing the game will change my focus

Yeah this game could use some anti-aliasing but that's just a "meh" thing honestly. The lack of A-A is compensated with that beautiful lighting, detailed characters/environments and depth of field. All running at perfect 60 fps. Uh la la.

Does anyone know when using the Wii Wheel, is the B button still hop/drift?

Wii Remote/Wii Wheel controls:
Accelerate: ②
Brake/Reverse: ①
Steer: Tilt the Wii Remote left or right
Hop: ① while holding ②
Rear view: Ⓐ
Horn: D-Pad (when not holding an item)
Throw item forward: D-Pad ↑
Throw/Drop item behind vehicle: D-Pad ↓
Equip item: D-Pad
Adjust gliding height: Tilt the Wii Remote forward or backwards

Damn that sucks. It felt natural using the B trigger on the back of the wii wheel to hop and drift.

I don't think there's a difference (in how games recognize them) between the Classic Controller and the Classic Controller Pro.
I was just about to ask what the difference was between pro and classic, as I've never had a pro.

The Wii Wheel naturally had a bumper at the back that would hit the B Button and allow you to hop/drift in Mario Kart Wii. The Wii Wheel design has not changed. Why would Nintendo remove this?

Literally no difference aside from the fact that one has grips and the other does not.

The normal Classic Controller also has analog L/R buttons. Don't think that they are used in any game, though.
Also, ZL and ZR are really tiny and awkwardly placed.

Just form factor and the placement of ZL and ZR. On the original Classic Controller they're small nubs located on the inner sides of the controller. On the Pro, they take the position of L2/R2 style triggers.

L and R also aren't analogue triggers anymore but no game made use of that functionality as far as I'm aware.

I'm relatively sure you can still use the B-button to drift. In Mario Kart Wii both the 1-button and the B-button did the same thing, so it would make sense for that to be the case here. Additionally, I think you can see the players using the B-button to drift in this video.

It's not listed in the game's digital manual

If it works even if it's not listed then that's great news for Wii Wheel users.

You probably can use B. For some reason the manual doesn't list all controls, such as shaking the Wiimote to perform tricks while we know it's possible.

Thanks everybody for the CC/CCPro account!

iirc Super Mario 3D World was compatible with a CCPro but not the regular CC so that may be the case here as well
But SM3DW is compatible with the CC - I just played a ghost house with it.

Is there any point in playing 50cc mode? Any unlockables? If not I probably won't bother, maybe after I've done everything else just for completist sake.

Extremely silly question but is the game actually any faster on the higher CC's or is it literally just three different difficulty levels ?.

In GP mode it's both, the CPU races better or just rubberbands hardcore and the speed increases accordingly. In Vs. Mode it's just speed and you can set difficulty independent of that.

Do we know if you'll be able to make a party with friends and then go race with other people online? My main worry is that, since I only have one friend who will also be getting this game, we'll only be able to play with us and CPUs.

Knowing Nintendo's track record, I feel like I already know the answer. Still, aside from that, super stoked for this game!

This is possible since 2008 in Mario Kart Wii, and it will be possible in Mario Kart 8.

edit: what PotionBleue said

Did, like, a million people get a code?

Pretty much torture at this point.
Seems like it. There are youtube channels uploading videos that have no other gaming related content on them (I'm sure they have some connection to gaming sites, but still). At least Nintendo seems to want to get the word out that this game is worth getting a Wii U for.
