Mario Kart 8 Info Thread

It's going to review pretty well, I think.

this is how long it will take me to get decent at racing this since I have not played an MK for a decade or so

Why would they be?

They seem to have their hands in a lot of Nintendo's pie lately. Wii Sports Club, Smash Bros., Pokken (if you think it's real) and their continued MK partnership with the arcade games (and whatever they did for 8 that got them two mentions in the credits). If they had a more active role in MK8 it wouldn't be surprising.

I wonder if there will be anymore secrets to find in the game. Nintendo has showed a lot of stuff off but they ate pretty good at leaving a few extra, extras. Fingers crossed!

Just saw a commercial for the game. Showed plenty of gameplay, made a point of the zero gravity mechanic, no family gathered in the living room, tag line was something along the lines of "it's flippin' awesome."

I wouldn't doubt if it's been mentioned already but I haven't seen anyone discuss it.

My only gripe til now are anti-gravity parts.

First, they don't look different. Is just all the screen is upside down and that's all. But maybe a little effect, some zoom out or something to make you feel a little dizzy. I know they don't want to mess with the final experience, and they said they tried some alternatives, but in the end it looks like you were in a normal track.

Then, I know the vehicles have anti-gravity wheels... but items don't. I think some items like bananas or shells shouldn't be used on those parts. And if you get hit by an item that is allowed (maybe the boomerang or the piranha) your anti-gravity must fail and your kart fall to the gravity part or an abysm.

And it could be cool that the first lap on GBA Mario Circuit was normal and the other two with that awesome anti gravity part.

Piranha plant's little potted wheels switches to antigravity.

"Mario Kart 8 is here!"

That's how you do it, Nintendo.

Seems with 3d world, Nintendo was using kids in their commercial, to target parents. In the meeting early this year, iwata said they need to target kids more. This MK commercial seems to be targeted at kids, so they can then bug their parents.

Sorry if this has been asked, but is it possible to race with an online friend(s) in random matchmaking?

I'll likely be pre-ordering this at GS soon, however, I won't be able to pick it up since I'll be gone for the weekend (birthday weekend, woo!). I know this isn't the place to ask, but I got a question about pre-ordering at GS (if someone could answer, it'd be greatly appreciated). Assuming I pay for the game in full upon pre-ordering, could I have someone on my behalf pick up the game for me or do I have to be in attendance for the pickup? I would pick it up at midnight launch but I'm not sure about when I leave. Thanks.

Yes. And that's a good detail. I find it really cool. But I think other items, specially banana, should fall from the track (I can't even name it floor).

But in the end, this is Mario Kart. Screw Physics. Screw logic. Have fun. A lot of fun. Bring friends.

While that may makes sense, I think it would suck in practice to be honest.

after watching the CM anyone think they should have allowed the camera to be upside down during the race if the track went upside down?

I guess if you are sitting in the kart your view point would not shift even if you were upside down but still

I thought that too, but everyone says it's the download size.

Edit: Well, just found a picture from the NA eShop, there it says: Space required 4,949.8 MB, so it might be the install space.

I am going to unplug my external HD so I can save that on the Wii U's space for faster access

Thought the same at first as well, but the anti-gravity parts are a gamechanger: for the first time, players can co-operate to become faster

Normally in a MK game it was always you vs. the world and now that anti-gravity mechanic with its touch-others-to-boost-feature turn that whole idea literally upside down. Think of situations like this: you are in anti-gravity mode, have one enemy in front of you, and one behind you, and a shell to fire. Wouldn't it be smarter to try to crash the driver in front of you to use him as booster instead of attacking him to further the distance between you and the driver that was behind you?

That's the dynamic of the anti-gravity system I think, and it could be bigger than many here think

Couldn't you use the shell to take out the guy in front of you and then crash into him/her for the boost while also leaving him/her in second to take the brunt of any follow up attack by the person behind you now that you have no item protecting you?

That's what he said tho.

Not only that, but I noticed that if you get triple mushrooms and someone bumps into you, then they get a boost from one of the mushrooms but don't actually steal the mushroom. Two people with triple mushrooms could conceivably cooperate for multiple boosts in the same way you can for anti-grav boosting.

It also makes me wonder why this wasn't the Mario Kart to add more mechanics for team on team racing. We now have... two.
