GAF Wii Homebrew thread: Homebrew, emulators, USB disc installs! Easy tutorial!

Can anyone think of any reason my disc drive would stop working after soft modding my Wii? the HBC works, but now I can't play any of my disc games anymore. It sucks.

Not actually that important

Did you connect to the right USB input? Wth the Wii laid down horizontally, it's the one closer to the bottom.

The thread seems pretty dead, but I'm hoping someone who's got homebrew running on Wii U/vWii can help me.

I've got a USB Y adapter for my HDD and I got the Homebrew Channel and all the IOSes installed just like tutorial, but for some reason, Config loader just hangs on the splash screen. HELP!

Is your hdd known as compatible? I went through 3 before I could get one to work.

for those wondering, a Wii U Pro controller or a PS3 controller are better to control GC games when running with Devolution than actual GC controllers with the adapter because the app maps the buttons in such a way that it makes it a chore to play with GC controllers.

i find that a big SD card is more convenient than an HDD to play games with the loaders. not sure if SDXC cards can be recognized by Wii mode but a 32GB SDHC card for GC games is far more convenient to use than an HDD (main reason is that the Wii U doesn't check the SD slot so you don't have to worry about leaving it plugged)
for Wii games with loaders, the USB HDD might be more convenient even with the added hassles (that is, if Wii mode doesn't recognize SD cards bigger than 32GB)

Shouldn't be an HDD issue. It hangs on the splash screen even with no drive plugged in.

Strange... I had that happen when my drive was going to sleep (spin down), that's why I asked. Try another loader maybe just to check it's not a hardware issue? I use USB Loader GX, it gives me less grief than CFG.

Just tried GX, it runs and loads fine, but won't detect the hard drive. I guess even with the Y cable it isn't enough enough to read it. Strange, though I read somewhere it would work just fine (I have an old WD Passport)

EDIT: Looks like I might've picked up the wrong type of Y cable. I got this. When I probably should have picked up this

If you haven't changed the spin down or sleep settings on a PC try that first. But yeh if not you might have to try find a confirmed compatible HDD. Like I said I went through 3 before I struck lucky, and they were all with y cables. My one that actually works is a powered one without a y cable, and even then I had to change the spin down settings before it would detect it.

Hi guys, I will receice a WiiU by the end of the month, ks there a possibility to play backup games on a HDD (Wii) on the gamepad ?

Compatibility with HDDs depends on the ios used so try some different ones if a specific HDD was previously mentioned as compatible.

I've not turned my Wii on in about 2 years. Need to dig it out of storage, it's soft modded but I can't remember how/everything that I've done.

Is this guide still the best to start over? - http://gwht.wikidot.com/

I picked up Xenoblade Chronicles today, finally, and just want to play it! But I do want to keep the Wii modded.

Finally got it! I got the right kind of Y Cable today AND plugged it in the right way. The Red USB HAS to be on the outside port. Also like you said, it seems USBLoader GX is the way to go, still can't get USBLoader to run for some odd reason.

For a regular Wii? Absolutely! I would look into the d2x and Devolution (check out Config USB Loader MOD version) and maybe the Safe Upgrade guide.

What would be faster to play my backups, by putting them on an flashdrive, external hdd, sd card or a class 10 microsd card in an adapter? Just looking to get the best and easiest result.

I'm also reading the gwht wiki now but where in the steps do I do d2x and Devolution?

Sorry, big noob at this! Thanks though :)

Woo hoo! That's awesome. I love GX glad you found it useful.

Hey guys, I'm about to go out and get Super Smash bros. brawl for the smash stack exploit and I'm wondering if it matters that I get the nintendo select range version?

Thank you for all the help!

Still not sure why my hard drive isn't being found by any of the loaders. It's plugged into an AC outlet, so I shouldn't need a Y USB cable, correct? And even then, in the Wii U system settings, my hard drive is right there.

Just tried the bottom port now. With USBLoader GX, instead of outright telling me there was no USB device found, it gave me a 20 second countdown, then told me the same. Hmm.

Do you have spin down turned off? Is your HDD confirmed compatible with vWii (if there is such a list for vWii)?

Tried to use my USB Loader last night. App loaded, but when I selected a game, it went to a black screen and never loaded. I'm guessing I screwed something up when I tried to update my cIOS. Is there something I can use to verify, or should I just go ahead and reload all cIOS?

Anyone knows a good homebrew thread focusing on the WiiU, specialy with gamecube backups ?

What you're looking for is Devolution. It's a software that works on the Wii, on non-BC Wii systems and on Wii U's vWii mode. It allows you to play Gamecube games, but you need a BC Wii to rip your Gamecube games. This is because the software won't load any games unless you can "prove" that you've ripped your own original games.

So you need:

- Backwards Compatible (BC) Wii.
- Original Nintendo Gamecube games.
- A Wiimote (it uses the WM's internal memory as a means to transfer the "proof" of the backup being made by you. You need to generate it, it won't work with other people's).
- Devolution installed on the target system.

I have just done a quick search and seen that GBAtemp has been mentioned and linked to on this thread, so I guess it's OK to do so? If not, please remove the link:

Hi there, just saw a pictures of someone who got a wii u hooked up with a cube controller and streaming sunshine on his gamepad. I got my wii u, but i now want to hook completely backup everything from my wii to wii u and also want to use my wii u as a gamecube platform.(backing up!) what is the device called to use my cube stuff on my wii u and what software do i need, do upgrade everything to this state?

I hope there is an easy tutorial.... Havent been active in this for ages....

I'm not sure if it is compatible with vWii or not. It's a five year old Maxtor HDD that the Wii U itself detects in its system settings, so I thought I'd be in the clear there. As far as spin down goes, I think it's activated. It's not constantly whirring all the time if that's what you mean.

Try turning spin down off then (so it is whirring all the time). I had to do that otherwise my Wii thought the drive was asleep and nonexistent.

I'm not sure what's wrong, but I can't download cheats from ocarina in Cfg and USB Loader GX. I get a 404 prompt in the former and a blank txt. file in the latter. Also, I seem to be having trouble figuring out where to place the DKCR classic controller code. I've created a codes folder in the root like I've seen around the web and placed the v1 file (which worked on my Wii) into it, but no dice.

Did anyone ever figure out a way to enable the Classic Controller in Metal Slug Anthology? I've managed to get all my GC games working with the CC pro thanks to Devolution, it'd be nice to do the same with this one!

does anyone know what to use for playing actual game gamecube discs on a softmodded wii?

all i have is the hbc channel...could i just use gecko os to launch the japan game i am trying to play?

I haven't used it in a while, but from what I remember that's exactly how it should work. Just start Gecko, select "Launch game" or whatever it's called and it loads what's in your disc drive.

Just bought a Wii U. The only game I own any more is Twilight Princess, I guess I can't do the homebrew channel with it as it's patched now for that game? If so what are my other options? Cheers

Find a used copy of Brawl or LEGO Batman, I guess. I need to do the same. Stupid fixes. :(

That Twilight hack has been patched a long time ago. The biggest game still working on WiiU is Smash Bros. Apart from that I think there are a few Lego games and Tales of Symphonia 2. Not sure if all work on all regions.

Edit: beaten, that Pikachu is so fast.

Yes. You would need another retail game. Brawl, LEGO Indiana Jones and Star Wars are good ones. Letterbomb doesn't require any games and might still work (while it uses the message board and needs your console MAC I'm not sure if uses the Wiiconnect24 for messaging at all...if it does it won't work).

Will track down the cheapest option lol. Probably not Brawl.

Still haven't gotten the Classic Controller hack to work for DKCR on vWii. Anyone else have this issue? I did it the exact same way I did for my homebrewed Wii, but unless I'm missing something, no dice so far.
