I don't think changing the line makes the scene bad, but it is a bit sad that they obviously changed it because they didn't expect people to remember the name of a main character for the last 3 seasons.

This should totally be a new euphemism.

Darron is getting in some practice for the kingsmoot.

He's getting someone to blow his horn

I like how the Mountain is such a fucked up monster that they don't even feel the need to explain why he's killing a small crowd of men with his shirt off in the broad daylight. They DO point out that he's only been back in King's Landing for a few hours. For some reason his first morning back involves a gruesome massacre with entrails strewn everywhere, and neither Cersei nor the audience even questions it.

Yeah it was there but fleeting, and didn't have time to really settle in. They could have lingered a little longer on it, instead of on Carice's boobs. Not that I am in any way complaining about her boobs - but it was still a very packed episode and I was really looking forward to this moment. They didn't botch it, but it was a favourite from the book which could have been served better with another minute of screen time at most.

On second thought, I think Sansa should have been building Carice's boobs out of snow.

Well, what the hell is he else going to do? Go to a whore? That is not Gregor way!

LOL, I was wondering what was going on there? Why was he killing those men?

Power is power.

The more I think about it the more I'm moderately concerned the show will suffer greatly when they run out of material to crib from. A lot of the original material has been dreadful.
People who constantly note that they can't wait for the show to start making completely original content/skip through AFFC/ADWD are going to get their wish and look quite foolish IMO. David and Dan constantly create scenes that either go nowhere or simply don't make any sense, and this season they really took it to 11 with some bad stuff (Yara running from dogs, Locke's nonsensical plan to carry Bran over the Wall, Arya's turn based combat with Rorge, etc). Basically most of their action scenes feel like them saying "ok we need an action beat, there has been too much talking."

Loved the Hot Pie scene though!

Exactly.

Either they think their audience is too dumb to remember the name of a major character or they think they own ability to let the audience know what her name was has been lacking.

I feel that the problem of those added scenes resides in the fact that they have to be careful not to put anything that changes the unknown (to us) future. Once they get to what has not been published, they will be free to go full throttle.

Honestly, "Your sister" also just sounds better than "Only Cat".

Cersei wouldn't care as long as the backlash didn't effect her. But yeah, that was just random.

Good episode.

- Daario has a pretty nice butt
- Mel still has nice tits
- Fantastic performance from the Hound
- HOT PIE!!!
- Oberyn is killing it, fantastic scene with Tyrion
- Robyn and Sansa was handled well

The only slight on the episode is how awful the Gregor scene was. Not only was it just random violence which made very little sense, but the LOOK on his face is just awful. He doesn't look like some psychopathic monster, he looks like some friendly large guy taking part in a circus act. When Cersei spoke to him, it was like a celebrity meeting a performer as a VIP fan. Totally hilarious. Thankfully he'll be in armor for the duel, so it won't look so stupid.

Some of my friends watch the show and asked me last night who Stannis is. There are people who do not know places, character names, etc. I had a friend ask me if the intro changes each time. I kinda wonder why they bother.

Yeah was hoping for a quiet, personal moment with Sansa building the Snow Winterfell before Robert came in. But the episode was pretty packed. I wish they had saved the moon door moment for the next episode and closed with Lysa seeing Sansa and Littlefinger.
Splitting that scene again would've been an even bigger mistake. Lysa revealing the whole scheme was the real shock to me when I read it; it was one of the best parts of the book.
This felt like a regular backstabbing scene, and perhaps even a little rushed.

I'd have to read more on fan feedback from the last episodes, but it seems they have failed to expose how big LF's plot was and how much it shaped the story. Sure, people on reddit, GAF, WIC, etc are aware of it, but I think most of the audience will never realize it.

I definitely got that vibe, yeah. His delivery of that one(?) line was clumsy at best.

Whatever. I'm sure the fight will be brilliant.

Yep.

Once the show passes the book the only hope for it not having a huge drop in quality is that GURM takes a much bigger role in the series. Which of course will mean the books will be delayed even more.

Best case scenario right now is that the show goes in a radically different direction (like, no R+L=J or something) so they don't spoil the reveal of the book's ending.

It's obvious why, it's popular and they don't want to be left out.

Next episode is going to be hard to watch =( For all the craziness that takes place in SoS, what always sticks out to me is the duel and how Oberyn gets killed =( Being such a great character on the show isn't helping either.

Two (and some) words:

Karl "Fookin Legend" Tanner, best cutthroat in King's Landing.
He's way better than the Karl or Dirk in the books, and the whole Craster's Keep side-plot is up there book plots.

Rewatched that dopey Gregor scene and he's 100% being overdubbed by Ian Whyte. I'm hoping this means they can dub in the Mountain's dialog during the battle in the next episode since his face will be mostly covered.

Dinklage's performance was great the way he just sat there and slowly got teary as Oberyn told him how everyone thought he was a monster from the moment he was born.

My guess:

Trial by combat. A bunch of peasants thought to be wise asses after they heard the Imp called for a trial by combat.

So they got their trial by combat.
Trial by combat.
"You've been convicted of stealing bread. You are sentenced to lose one hand."
"I request trial by combat."
"That is your right. Your opponent will be The Mountain."
"Fuuuuuuck."

Oddly, while the show loves adding action scenes that fall flat, I still think they've done a great job on chatty scenes featuring all non-POV characters. Stuff like Varys chatting in from of the Throne, Robert and Cercei, Tywin and Jaime from season 1, are all really memorable.

Also Karl Tanner is best character in GOT history.

Feast and Dance is going to be a huge challenge for the show. Not just the timing of the arcs and structure of climaxes - there's a huge cast to consider for introduction - Dorne cast, Iron Islands cast, Meereen politicos, Tyrion's boat crew. Val.

The other challenge is just structure. They're less dramatic books for the most part, with much more subtlety. Not going to mesh well for TV. There's a good chance they're already fast-tracking Brienne's story. It seems very likely they're going to add more action scenes.

Completely unrelated random thought, but I hope we get a cover of The Dornishman's Wife. Would be a great closer for the next episode, Arys Oakheart, or the Dragontamer scene.

I've been waiting for that song for a very long time but sadly it won't happen this season. :(

For people complaining about Littlefinger's change of accents, a poster over at thecoli has pointed out that it is intentional.

I thought the same thing but that's part of the nikka's game. When he's among Lords and Ladies, dude speaks with a 'common' accent to seem less threatening but when he's on his demonic shyt, he speaks with a 'normal' but darker accent:

Common:

Lord:

LF and Varys are the best players in this game by a long way cause no one suspects their motives. My nikka Tyrion was wisest towhat these two nikkas were up but it ain't looking good for that nikka

I just realized that if Euron is Daario, Daenerys is in for some unpleasantness in the next book.

It's very likely that when the 93 ships arrive, the Ironmen onboard will conquer Meereen, killing most of the Unsullied. Daario/Euron will have Hizdahr brought forth and executed, and Daenerys will be forced to marry her old lover. This conquest may be how Barristan dies, and we can't know if Missandei, Daenerys' councilors, and Strong Belwas will survive, either. It's possible that Ramsay's treatment of his first wife and of Winterfell may foreshadow Euron Greyjoy's actions in The Winds of Winter.

Nah, won't happen, Dany got a dragon - a dragon is worth more than an army, more than 93 ships.

Man, thinking back to the first time I read ASOS, I knew that Oberyn wasn't going to win. At that point, George RR Martin convinced me that there was no fucking way he was going to let justice be served in King's Landing. However, the way he wrote the fight - the build up, and then the actual execution - I actually started believing that Oberyn's cool rage was going to be enough to beat the Mountain. It was only when I started to believe that Oberyn got cocky and lost control, and as such got his face smashed.

Hearing some people talk about how Oberyn is such a good character, and as a result is fated to die, kind of reminds me of the same emotions I had reading the book. I'm wondering if the fight scene will have people believing before smashing his face in.

yeah they fucked up the mountain in the show, and now its final
he was one of my favourite side characters, first the abysmal first recast and now my fears for the third mountain have come true, too. far too young, far too nice looking.
well conan stevens war perfect, no doubt. its such a shame they lost him. I bet season 2 would have had more real mountain scene with him, too. season 3 maybe even.

but I am not too concerned about the duel in the next episode, whatever went poorly with the mountain, pedro pascal easily evens that out, and more. I think the duel will hit like a sledgehammer. they set it up real nicely and I cant wait to see it.

I'm wondering if the fight scene will have people believing before smashing his face in.

of course, he will win. as he did in the books. but then he makes one mistake, exactly like bronn foreshadowed.

Hell, it still sucks me in every time I read that chapter. Every time he drives his spear into the back of Gregor's leg, I find myself believing that this is the time Oberyn wins.

Couple of things:

- People complaining about new Gregor actor's age. I don't like the recast either (well, he's probably better than G2 anyhow), but it's not like there's exactly an abundance of 7' actors out there.

- New Daario looks like Shia LaBeuof.

Sorry but I'll have to disagree, most of the non-book stuff felt like anime filler to me, like the dragons being stolen and the mutineers at Craster's.

Yes. Most of the show-only additions have been shite. I'm just glad there's no more Ros.

I always thought Arya was much more spoiled than Sansa, Sansa was naive but she tried to be a good girl and do what society expected from someone in her position, Arya did whatever she wanted and she could do it because her father was top dog in the north and let her do it.

Arya changed but that she's alive is nothing but dumb luck, she's a snotty little girl who keeps running into people who know who she is and want to keep her alive. She'd have died a dozen times if not for others protecting her.

WTF is this shit? Yes, Arya was a tomboy that liked to run around and play swords. But her moral compass has always been in the right place (well, she is slowly becoming a killer, but that's another matter), unlike the emotionally and mentally stunted bimbo that is Sansa. Lets not forget that she's a few years older than Arya as well. Arya would never have betrayed her father and her family "becuz Joffrey is dreamy!!1"

Then again in my imagination the moon door was an actual door, not a hole in the ground, so things were quite different. :p

It was an actual door in the book. I think they made it a hole to make it more dramatic and I think it worked in Season 1. But this scene had a lot of things wrong with it in general. Felt too rushed with little buildup.

It flows better when spoken by the actor.
Based on the line "Your sister." sounding more ominous and compelling than what I imagined "Only Cat" would have sounded like.
Or maybe they had him do both lines, and the director though Only Cat sounded kinda dumb when spoken out loud.

It was also a much safer option than trying to do the "Only Cat"-line only to have countless of book fans disappointed because the intonation or whisper-level was not what they imagined. That's the crux here, that you got a small, but loud, minority of show watchers who come into the show with the unrealistic expectations they've built up over the years, as GRRM has kept them content-starved.

If they had gone with "only cat" then I bet the complaints would be along the lines of why did he say it in a batman voice? or that's not what his face should have been like, he should have shown a smidge more of sorrow and revulsion.

I imagined him whispering "only cat" in her ear. I think "your sister" is kind of an awkward way to talk to someone. Maybe it's where I live, but when people talk to someone about their siblings, they would use their name rather than saying "your sister" or "your brother." It just serves no other purpose than to spell things out for the viewers, and I find it a little patronizing. It kind of has a "from my point of view, the Jedi are evil" vibe to me.

Vanity Fair wrote an article about why "Your Sister" is a better line. Next up, "Why Ros is my most missed character on the show."

GTFO Vanity Fair! What a stretch that article is.

Why didn't have dany and irri or messendei get in on last season when she did nudity? Why not show her at least kiss Daario? Why didn't Sansa (or a body double) get naked for Tyrion?

oh man oh god, if there was a Dany and Missandei sex scene I'd be all like

80872377.gif

#teammissandei for life. Speaking of, weren't they trying to build an awkward romance between her and Gray Worm? How would that even work since he has no fun parts?

Reading this thread, you would think the words "Only Cat" were the very peak of English literature, and to alter it was tantamount to rewriting Shakespeare.

You don't mention that those scenes are limited by the fact they've got to go with what GRRM is doing. Of course Bran can't go elsewhere/Yara rescue Theon at that point.
