Mario Kart 8 Info Thread

How the hell do you play Mario Kart for 20 years and don't know about Lakitu Boosts or spamming the item button to get an item faster? Are you as bad as IGN that don't even know how to drift properly?
I know these things mostly because of CTR, and that game was more obvious about any airtime = boost.

Has this been discussed? That's the fastest Lakitu save I've ever seen. Kind of changes the relative risks of falling. And even the item is retained.

Also, that lighting... that gorgeous lighting.

Yeah. NoA can be a bit stingy. It wouldn't be a big deal if other regions didn't have more options but seeing that embitters me just a little.

I'll take Wind Waker HD but I probably would have gone for W101 or Game & Wario instead if they were available. I don't care about the value comparison.

I wanted Mario & Sonic whatever Sochi 2014 but it's not available here :/

Played with Bowser!

Don't you know how to set Items as shields?

Don't feel bad. Mario Kart has a lot of little things that most people don't know about :p For another example, if you make a bobbing motion when using the glider, you actually go faster in the air.
Bobbing side to side or front to back?

I knew that there was still a lot I didn't know since I've seen other racers with my exact combo online racing far ahead of me even when it feels like I've had a flawless race.
Gliding Down then pulling up.
Ah thanks, that explains why some can do the RR shortcut in MK7 without any shrooms but I can never make it.

Praise the fucking sun! The only thing I could find on the subject was people speculating that it may or may not. This will be my most played mode. Thanks!

Even better, if your player 2 has their own NNID on the system, they can get their own ranking stats instead of always being logged in as "Guest" like it was with MKWii!

The game's performance apparently takes no hit in this mode either so it seems they optimized the engine around it.

Nintendo really walks the walk when it comes to their pushing of local multiplayer.

Did you guys also know that Mew is under one of the trucks in Toad's Turnpike?

Anyway. I'm really glad they added underwater segments in the last game. I don't know what it is about me, but good water in video games always impresses me. I could live on Delfino Island. I'm not sure, but I feel like my favorite track is gonna end up being Dolphin Shoals

As I mentioned before, I had this same issue but then today I tried the DKCTF demo on the same TV and it looked just as rough and jaggy. I'm pretty sure an extremely cheap old TV with poor settings is being commonly used for these demo stations.

I just tested this out at best buy. Both dk and 3d mario world were a lot smoother than mario kart. Im not looking forward to seeing it on my tv. The bestbuy tv makes 3d mario world look way better than on my tv. I cant imagine the jaggies im going to encounter when i pick this game up

What I wanna know is if the Lakitu save will remove the effects of lightning still. Without it fading to black I'm guessing it won't anymore.

Haven't paid much attention to video coverage, but are the tracks still a mile-wide with easily avoidable obstacles that barely effect the core racing experience?

Nope. Rainbow road spoilers if it matters.

Depends on the track but overall things are much more narrow than mario kart wii.

Sounds like a YMMV sort of deal.

Depends on how you look at it.
In Mario Kart Wii ALL the tracks were way too wide but in Mario Kart 8 there seems to be a balance between wide and narrow tracks.
Overall they narrowed them.

There are tracks with wide sections (Sunshine Airport's airstrip, Tick-Tock Clock's main clock) and there are others with very narrow sections (Electrodrome and Dry Bone Dunes' split paths)

I quite disliked Mario Kart Wii for this very reason.

Mario Kart 8 is very different in that regard with a good number of the tracks offering much tighter design. The track design is a huge improvement over previous Kart titles, I feel. I found MK Wii and DS to be utterly boring but MK8 is a blast.

You know, you're right. With MKWii I used to say "I have ten minutes, enough for a race, I win this one and go to work" . Then obviously I' d finish last and craved revenge, so ten minutes became 40. But what a great feeling, man

I've fallen into the same mistake too many mistakes with MK8 already over the last few days, I say never Mario Kart before bed!

Is it confirmed for two players, that you cannot have first player using the GamePad screen and the second player using the TV so they each have their own dedicated screen?

After perusing it for the first time, that's kinda what I'm getting...

And this is awesome. I'm pretty sure my MK-loving twelve-year-old will feel the same. :D

draging an item? I thought that was taken out? instead you hold the item in your hand, like the first part of this gif. what is going on here?

yep and I find that pretty lame.

You can drag a Bob-omb, single Green Shell, single Red Shell, single Banana. You cannot drag anymore triple Banana or Blue Shell.

really? I remember reading on several sites and boards that dragging was out completely. Ok cool. you cant pick up a 2nd item though when doing this now right?

Pretty sure thats how it works now. You can drag items but you won't be able to pick up one for standby until you use your current one.

I'm back from the mall a few hours ago and came away impressed after playing Mario Kart 8 demo at GameStop. There's not much else to say since everyone's read the reviews and other demo impressions here on GAF, but believe it ,the game looks and plays very well. The graphics are as great as they've been made out to be, the tweaked gameplay improvements seem to make things better and more balanced, and the new features are welcomed additions. I only got to use two piranha plants and one boomerang. I noticed I rarely got hit by the AI racers, maybe 3-4 times in all my play sessions on Cloudtop Cruise, MK Circuit, Toad Harbor, Sweet Sweet Canyon using Wario, Bowser, Metal Mario, Shy Guy, Morton and Ludwig. I fell off once on Toad Harbor, but Lakitu quickly picks you up ,so it doesn't feel like you're getting screwed by having him take so long for him to recover your fallen vehicle and place it back on the track. The anti-graviy sections were fairly subtle when you encounter them, but they still provide a cool and refreshing twist despite their minimal impact on the core gameplay.

Can you use 1 gamepad and 3 pro controllers and still have 4 screens on the TV or does the gamepad force you to play on it?

In that scenario, you'll have 4 screens on the TV. The GamePad won't act as another screen, the only off-TV play for it is single player.

Don't know if its been mentioned, but target is offering a free Wii U Wheel with the purchase of Mario Kart 8. My guess is first come first serve.
