I agree.
Super Mario 3DWorld had a good debut (100k) but increased the HW saels from 14k to 20k in November, around holidays period when Wii U was "hotter" compared to a normal period.
On the other hand, DQX expansion pack sold 70k on Wii U, but provided a good bump, from 28k to 48k. it was closer to Holiday seasons, so probably benefit from that, in fact the week after the Wii U sold 74k.
In other words: I'm expecting an higher MK8 debut software number, but still a not so hot Wii U hw bump.

Agreed. The market is just to skewed towards mobile for some of these games to put up really high hardware numbers. I expect the same paltry numbers when KH3 and FFXV drop for PS4.

Wii u about to be woken. Mk8 can't come soon enough. I hope it does awesome numbers.

lol You really need to temp those expectations champ.

Wait Yakuza Ishin was announced for the PSV?

Misconception by the poster I quoted from.

Pre Mario Kart Wii week.
Wii: 44,618

Mario Kart Wii week:
Wii: 46,296

I hope we don't see same situation with Mario Kart 8.

Oh wow

The PS4 is expensive to develop for because of its raw horsepower. Gen-over-gen, We're seeing the total number of titles released down across the world, not just in Japan. It's reasonable to expect a notable decrease in full releases on PS4 relative to PS3 over the course of the system's lifespan. Obviously we can expect the same for Wii U as well.

Its also not just exclusive to consoles but also handhelds. Overall, the output of games on dedicated devices is declining.

Clothes will get damaged after each fault. The girls' sounds while doing any action will sound like some cheap porn. And despite it being competent gameplay wise it'll get overlooked by the amount of crap that they've trown into it to try and catter to the otaku audience.

Your turn, Compile Heart.

I'm curious about how Bayonetta 2 and Hyrule Warriors will perform. Both are games whose audience are traditionally on PS consoles.

They'll probably announce X and Smash Bros release date at a Nintendo Direct. Probably some Mario Kart DLC (free or paid). And some 2015 games.

The latter half of the year was quite good for what I've read here on GAF, even if the first one was quite bad after some delays. They seem to be doing the same strategy this year.

I wouldn't say Hyrule warriors audience is on the PlayStation platform, while a warriors game it's distinct enough with the style of the Zelda franchise in that I doubt it's going to ditched simply because it's a musou.

You just need to look at any thread about the game here, plenty of posters that haven't never really been interested in musou before. I imagine if it bombs it'll be because Zelda isn't that popular in Japan rather than it being a musou style game.

Bayonetta however sales relys on that fact that it's fanbase bothered to buy a wii u. It'd help a lot of Nintendo bundled it.

Best selling vita games sold less then 500k vita has 0 big games

What does that mean PS3 literally has 1 million seller (maybe two if it it managed to creep up there) and that's after what 8 years on the market. The PS3 didn't get big games that sold well. PS3 was a mid tier and niche machine, much like the Vita.

Sony better bring something appealing to the Japanese audience at E3 because if they don't they could well be being outsold by the XBone as well come September.

I would guess they'd save a lot if there is announcements to be had for TGS if they are Japanese targeted games. Also for PS4 its about to get a whole lot worse before it gets better, this summer is going to be ugly and brutal on week to week hardware. How low can it go guessing game about to start

Yokai Watch just smashed through the one million barrier. I think "little interest in handhelds" is wrong, and it's really "little-to-no interest in Sony handhelds".

I would say it has more to do with the actual game rather than platform itself.

Pretty much bad hardwaee sales all around. I hope for Vita to go back to 20k after the post Golden Week slump. Not sure if it'll happen before Freedom Wars release, athough there's a number of games that are coming on the 29th.

WiiU is rising due to Nintento's MK8 marketting push. I'm very interested to see how long can Mario Cart effect keep the sales up. But first we need to see how big of an effect it'll have on hw sales to begin with.

As for PS4, well... see you next year.

It'd be a surprise if the Wii U outsold the Vita next week, never mind the 3DS.

I don't think it'll be that surprising. Neither 3DS' or Vita's sales are that high. It should really outsell them both next week.

That platform still has a l 15million install base so yes it did have lot something to do with the platform. Everything is more to do with the game if not at launch but I don't really see Youkai watch reaching those numbers if it was on the psv for example.

I think Wii U will hit the 20k mark next week.

I said before that my prediction is <15k, but i better bet on a set number like everybody.

I think it will be 12k

(never had predicted sales before, because its the first time im following numbers. Its pretty fun!)

Based on this weeks figures I'm not convinced it's going to be that high. 20k for Wii U would be my guess for next week. They really needed a price cut + a MK8 hardware bundle over there..I don't think they are doing either.

I believe it did that much for Pikmin 3 last year, Mario Kart 8 is.......the game at the moment and I'm seeing a 40k spike.

I'm wondering if that's a viable strategy for Nintendo in the long-term; since the 3DS became a de facto upgrade path from *both* the PSP and DS, leaving the Vita by the wayside, in part due to the Monster Hunter exclusivity deal, making some smart publishing deals could perhaps have a similar effect - on a smaller scale - making the Wii U the de facto upgrade path from the PS3.

My gut says that FF15 is too big a name for PS4 (and presumably won't have a Wii U version!) for that to work, but I think putting in the work to secure Japanese developers who *do* want to stick with consoles and are perhaps a bit too small-scale for PS4 development could be a reasonable move.

I think Wii U will hit the 20k mark next week.

I'll say 50k. It's outlandish enough that I can claim it's a joke if it doesn't work out, but be awesomely smug about it if it does :)

I predict Wii U in the 40k-60k range next week, so 50k as an average.
Mario Kart 8 itself should easily open at around ~300k.

Anything less than that and it is a serious trouble for Wii U's future.

I'd like to think so..but the lack of a MK8 bundle in Japan ,no price cut since launch and only a minor hardware boost this week makes me think otherwise. I'm hoping it will have a long tail at least.

Nintendo, the dragon of Kyoto, knows what Japan needs. Unfortunately, the Wii U and, to a lesser extent, the 3DS were the early indicators to Japan's market shift. Nintendo's next hardware platforms will be a direct and loud answer to the Japanese market situation.

Ps3 had 2 games over 1 millons but it also have 22 games sold over 500k and less then 1 million.
Vita had 0 game over 1 millions and only one game over 500k.
All what Vita get this year are sequel that sold less then the previous games

What's the second? Are you adding up all the different versions and reprints of RE5?

I can't understand some people predicting under 15k for Wii u next week. As was said even Pikmin gave a better bump than that.

35k hardware, 250k MK8.

Yes, the Japanese have clearly shown they prefer mobile to handhelds and especially to dedicated home consoles. I don't think the Japanese video game industry is struggling as significantly as these charts would lead one to conclude, it's just that the type of games doing very well (on iOS and other mobile platforms) aren't being tracked.

I think we now know why Sony is paying the booth fees at TGS for indies; there is probably only a couple left making legacy games...

I actually didn't think the PS4 would have a worse week than the Wii U at the same time in its life. The fact that this was Infamous' first week makes it even worse.
Generally speaking, it wasnt expected that Infamous Second Son would do much for the PS4 hardware sales in Japan, so i dont think that would have changed much. We're probably looking at a few thousand PS4 units in difference at max with or without the release of Infamous Second Son.

What was the PS3 missing from the big titles? Dragon Quest i know about.

It should, but that's not to say it will. Mario Kart will only count for 4 days next week.

I'm going to be bold, optimistic and highly unrealistic, and say that that for Week 23 (i.e. not next week, the week after) the Wii U will go to 70k. It isn't going to happen, and I don't expect it to, but I would be pleasantly surprised if it did.

Sub 15k for the Vita makes me sad. Looks like it won't be long until steady 20k weeks are a distant memory.

I'll take small consolation from the 3/10 titles in the top 10.

still 100K ahead of last year... still a champion.

It worked for Vita.

certainly the number speaks for itself.

It's a testament to how far unit sales have fallen that 14k units/week is considered saved.

but 3DS is doomed at 25K.

Best selling vita games sold less then 500k vita has 0 big games

so are you saying it worked for VITA or not? That's the quote he replied to.

What does that mean PS3 literally has 1 million seller (maybe two if it it managed to creep up there) and that's after what 8 years on the market. The PS3 didn't get big games that sold well. PS3 was a mid tier and niche machine, much like the Vita.

That "one" million seller makes a big difference though since selling a million in Japan is a pretty big deal.

PS3 already had a few games selling over 500K after the same time on the market and yet VITA had none. PS3 has a lot of titles selling over 500K on it although with only 1 (or 2) million sellers. VITA is looking to have a lot of titles selling 300-500K on it with only 1 or 2 500K seller.

And I'm not sure what you mean by PS3 didn't get big games that sold well. Other than Nintendo games and DQ, what big games did PS3 not get?

If you really have to draw the comparison, PSV would be a shitty version of PS3 which itself is a shitty version of PSP (only one series selling over one million on the platform).

EDIT: beaten badly

Dragon Quest and Taiko are all I can think of?

There was no new Kingdom Hearts title on Ps3. So it´s like missing the whole IP for this Gen (i know there are the collections, but this is not the same).
