It’s a debut at No1 for Bethesda’s Swedish studio MachineGames first game - ‘Wolfenstein: The New Order'.

It's the 6th game in a series that began in 1981 with ‘Castle Wolfenstein’ and becomes the 2nd biggest release of 2014 (behind Microsoft’s Titanfall initial release in week 11 on Xbox One/PC) and New Order accounts for a quarter of all entertainment software unit sales in week 21, 2014 (36% of all revenue). It is also the first ‘Wolfenstein’ to reach No1 on the All Formats Chart in the UK, also topping each individual format chart (All Format Charts began in 1997), with Activision’s ‘Return to Castle Wolfenstein’ (2001, 4th game in the series) reaching No11 and sequel ‘Wolfenstein’ (2009, 5th game in the series) reaching No2 in week 34, 2009 (behind Wii Sports Resort). Sony climb one place to No2 with ‘Minecraft PS3 Edition’ (+49%) and EA’s ‘FIFA 14’ drops 2 places to No3 (+15%).

Microsoft’s ‘Titanfall’ also drops 2 places to No4 (-3%) but EA’s ‘2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil’ remains at No5 for a third week (+20%). The only other new release to grace the Top 40 is Codemasters’ ‘F1 2013: Complete Edition’ at No34. On PC Full Price Kalypso debut at No4 with ‘Tropico 5’ and on PC Budget Deep Silver/Koch debut at No12 with the humorous ‘Goat Simulator’.

Havent played it yet, but watched a cutscene and was surprised at the quality of the writing. Seems deserved based on all the positive impressions. Will definetly check that one out, could need an oldschool shooter right now.

I always find Minecraft's performance bizarre. Never seems to follow normal sales patterns. Glad to see the PS3 version is doing exactly the same as the 360 version (which I still can't believe is such a beast at retail).

Glad to see Wolfenstein doing (relatively) well, too.

PC retail almost sold as much as 360 retail for wolfenstein.

Not too crazy considering the quick death of last gen and the history of Wolfenstein as a PC game

I expected Kirby to fall a lot more. I do have to wonder how much this has to do with how dead the charts are though rather than Kirby having legs of any length (get it?).

I guess Wolfenstein won't be the second biggest release of the year for long but could it remain the most dominant (in % of the weeks total sales)?

I also get the impression there was not a lot to talk about this week if entries to the budget PC chart are being talked about (even if they are new releases I don't recall previous news releases discussing anything out of the charts really). For the record I was not even aware of a boxed release of Goat simulator.

Good catch. I assumed the week behind was due to the week starting on a different day (say, Wednesday to Tuesday) but this news article says the week was 12th-18th. Then again they did initially have some game called Kirby Triple Luxe in the charts.

I do hear French stores are bad at holding street dates though (I remember people getting Friday releases on Wednesday or even the Friday before plus the leaked Halo games were usually in French) so I'm wondering if that happened here and the sales were still counted.

I'm not surprised to see Wolfenstein dominating, I'd heard quite a few guys a fair bit older than I am looking forward to picking it up.

I'm glad Kirby didn't drop off the chart, hopefully it'll hang in there for a long time yet.

Couldn't resist adding my dear old Commodore when I was typing out three generations of Sony consoles and two generations of Sony handhelds... kind of nutty. ;)

There are already some errors in this chart, but I do not believe Minecraft is one of them. The title is pretty specific (360) as is the platform (360). Perhaps MCV UK really, really messed it up, but I don't know for sure.

Yeah, All Formats is based solely on title, thus "MINECRAFT: XBOX 360 EDITION" is considered a different game to "MINECRAFT: PLAYSTATION 3 EDITION". Same with different versions of Pokemon etc.

I wonder if we'll ever be able to use the different SKUs of minecraft to gauge other all formats sells then :\

Personally I'm not convinced Minecraft PS3 retail at least will have near the legs of the 360 version as the 360 is still quite a bit cheaper right?

I guess it finally answers the question we had regarding how France and Germany compares to the UK.

VG markets in 2013 (in billion euros - used the 2013 average GBP - EUR exchange rate ):

UK ~4.1
France > 2.7
Germany 2.66
Spain 0.76
