Mario Kart 8 Sells More Than 1.2 Million Units Worldwide Over First Weekend

I understand this was kind of a joke post but,

Except that you don't really get $6 in the digital promotion. Second the free games aren't costing them full retail.

Lastly, giving that $5 in digital credit will only encourage further purchases. Great on them.

It's just like what they did with the $5 coupon after they were sued back in the day.

...I'm reading Console Wars right now lol

Well done Nintendo. It's a great game that I'm enjoying a lot.

That doesn't help the fact third party titles would continue to sell badly the release schedule would still be bad and the sales would still not be good.

The wii u has far, far bigger problems than how quickly MK8 was released.

I feel like you are not really reading what I am writing. I never claimed MK8 releasing earlier would have fixed the Wii U. I simply said that unveiling it by launch and having it out on the public consciousness sooner could have changed the initial perception of the system as something not offering new experiences.

I don't think Mario Kart 8 would change any perception about offering new experiences.

It does. Doesn't it MKTV unloads directly to YT. These aren't from MK TV however.

They are from MK TV, but you can't use the slow motion in videos uploaded to Youtube nor can you upload a full race (just 60 seconds max) so you could miss some details. Hence why the gifs are made using phone cameras.

Truthfully, these are really impressive sales, but I doubt this is going to save the Wii U. The system is still plagued with droughts between Nintendo releases.

Wait, so Kuchera predicted the lifetime sales would actually be around what was sold this weekend? LOL

Another writer, Dave Pach. Kuchera of course agreed since its a Polygon piece. And yep, its funny how fast the article was proven wrong.

How many are saying Mario Kart alone saves WiiU? It changes things for the better, not more, not less.

I think it will generate a meaningful bump in sales but your right. The slow drip drip software release of Nintendo is killing WiiU. They promised they wouldn't do it this time but there you go.

I bought a Wii U because of MK8 (and DKCTF). Still hate Nintendos low power approach, but i just needed those two games. In the end i think the Wii U is a great complementary console next to my PS4.

And i want a Mario 64 remake with MK8 engine.

Honestly they made a huge mistake not putting MK8, Tropical Freeze, and Smash Bros. in to Wii U commercials as "Software on the way" last Christmas. It was a big chance for them to show there was more than just 3D World and they totally whiffed it.

It's gonna be the same thing as always. The system's gonna get a bump from this, a handful of third parties will notice and churn out some shovelware slop or a late port, it won't sell, they'll blame Nintendo, and so on, and so on.

Oh well, at least we might get Zombi 2. Lol

I don't think Mario Kart 8 would change any perception about offering new experiences.

I think Mario Kart at a very superficial level just *looks* like an improvement and a generational leap from the Wii NSMB U did not.

Well the 3DS started the same and I'd argue that it's actually getting too much 1st party software now as some of those games should have been diverted to Wii U.

The 3DS drought didn't last nearly this long but Nintendo has said multiple times now that they were struggling to adapt to HD development. There won't be a 3rd party renaissance but it wouldn't surprise me to see monthly to bi-monthly releases of 1st party games by next year.

Yes. I think the WiiU has a good solid library now. Not extremely expansive but solid non the less.

I don't think he got what I was saying. I was implying all the negativity surrounding Wii U & Nintendo on forums & the press , MK8 makes a nice change for fans given the sales and positive reception

I agree with you. It was tough last E3 seeing all the great games coming on 3DS and not on WiiU

Well hopefully Nintendo will tell us as much during this years E3 but in truth. I only want 2 more things.

1. A proper sequel to SM64/Galaxy(1/2)
2. The new Zelda that looks like the demo/tease

And then I'm good. The rest is just gravy.

True. It's made me change my tune towards the WiiU.

A large proportion of those guys better be buying Bayonetta 2. Such a potential quality title should not be sniffed. Better not bombs guys... :(

I doubt it. Doesn't Mario Kart sell significantly better than Smash? Plus by the time Smash launches it will have been out on 3DS with a larger install base for 3+ months.

Launch sales between the two are about even but Mario Kart has significantly longer legs, at least based on the Wii versions of both.

The first is almost guaranteed imo. The Galaxy games sold too much copies and SM3DW felt like a warm-up game to get EAD Tokyo used to the console. In fact I wonder what the other team has been up to... hmm.

I'm worried about number two though. Nintendo may take Zelda U too far from the formula to draw in anything but hardcore Nintendo fans. It's impossible to say that it will look anything like that E3 '12 demo. I'd bet that the graphical presentation is going to be great but if they take it in a more whimsical direction people will be pissed again like when WW was debuted.

I think RE and Deus Ex make a nice change.

How many Wii U's have been sold worldwide to date?

Cause if it's something like 4 million, then a quarter of Wii U owners got the game :O

EDIT: Wow it's 6 million, which makes the 1 million Mario Kart 8's sold was a pretty big chunk

Yeah, it's really impressive. If I'm not mistaken the Wii U has an extremely good attach rate for the Nintendo games released (probably has a lot to do with it not selling much past the core Nintendo fans who'll want the core Nintendo games). Now we wait and see what it did for the hardware. I'm thinking of buying a Wii U myself now since it's beginning to get enough games for it to be worth it for me.

Pretty much agree with you. And yeah, you only need to look at the Wii numbers to see that Mario Kart is an absolute monster franchise for Nintendo, more so than Smash.

Now Nintendo needs to continue to push this game and older games, continue to bring interesting titles to the Wii U with and without NFC, and come out with a MK8 bundle for the holidays.

I'm not sure that type of ad campaign works. It's the one Sony has gone with in the states since the end of the PS2 and they've had decidedly mixed results. It works with the PS4 because people were already excited for it, it worked less so with LBP teases almost a year out.

Battle mode arenas which should have been in the game in the first place should not be paid DLC.

While I agree with you that they should have been in the game to begin with and shouldn't be paid DLC, I'd rather have them this way than not have them at all. Best case scenario, Nintendo recognizes their oversight, and distribute arenas as free DLC, but I doubt it.

Yes. I'm worried too. I'm certain they will show us something at E3 this year.

Good thing that the sequel to galaxy 2 is already out - and it's made with the same style of level design minus the space/gravity theme. 64 and Galaxy are polar opposites
