Guerrilla: GG's new IP won't be at E3 - not ready to show yet

DOOMED. Games have never been delayed, people have never moved around in the industry, and games have CERTAINLY never been cancelled.

SOONY IS DOOMED.

Setback != "DOOMED"

Games are delayed and games are cancelled, yes. I'm not sure how people can pretend that cancelling a project you've poured millions of dollars and years of time into can't fairly be termed a "setback". The word isn't even much of a pejorative. What would you prefer we call it? A "joyous reallocation of resources"?

Whatever project Black Tusk was working on got canned when they took over Gears, there have been a number of high profile departures from 343, Quantum Break got delayed to 2015...

Those would be setbacks too, though it's probably worth noting that Sony Santa Monica had been working on their game for literally years and they fired most of the staff associated with it. If Sony Santa Monica had cancelled their game because Sony picked up a big new IP and wanted them to work on it, that would probably be a different story.

Having to cancel the massive Sony Santa Monica game that had been in production for years, losing a lot of top talent at Naughty Dog, delaying The Order into 2015. I wouldn't say that's a "myriad" of setbacks mind you, but it has certainly cast some doubt on prospects for this year.
Please name the number of people that left Naughty Dog a few months/weeks ago.
Seriously! :)

Perfectly summed up, FF7 was my first FF game, And from then i never looked back with JRPG games. FF7 will always be the best game ever for me, So a remake would just be insane.

I played all the FF7 games before that one (the ones released in the US anyway) and FF7 was still my fave. If Sony had this at E3 I would be euphoric. Sadly it seems no one wants to make this deal, despite the fact it would be a gargantuan success.

Exactly. By that metric MS is in much more troubles than Sony. Concern trolling is concern trolling.

You know I find it weird how they canned that SSM game. Surely it could be salvaged, one way another. SSM have yet to make a bad game. I find it hard to believe it was 'that bad'.

Depending on what announcements we get at E3, I think it will be telling of what kind of state SCEWWS is in. I'm sure the PS4 was 'planned' by Sony many years ago. They must have been working on PS4 projects for at least two years now, surely?

To have nothing to show for it would be extremely disappointing. Sony's first party was superb on the PS3. I just hope we get a similar output on the PS4 but already a year in and we don't have the same number of first party exclusives from SCEWWS.

My understanding from that project, is they kept the assets so that they could go back to it, or have someone who could turn it around for a new project.

It may not have even been a quality issue. It may have just been an issue of them being way over budget, mismanaged, and a long way from completing the game. "We've already spent 40 million dollars, but it will take another 30 million to finish the game.....but we don't believe it can earn more than 50 million dollars in stores".

Bioshock Infinite probably would have been cancelled if it was a new IP.

Man, what does Sony have left to show at E3 now? Uncharted and The Order are obvious, but it seems the only new stuff will be Project Beast and The Last Guardian. I'll be very happy if the latter get re-unveiled, but it doesn't seem there's going to be be many huge "shockers" like last year.

It's not a question of Sony having nothing to show. Its not a question of them not having anything upcoming. Sony has a lot of titles in development and 2015 is shaping up to be an incredible year for them. My problem (and I think I'm not alone in this) is their lineup for the rest of this year, as I've said previously. I'd just like to see them do something to improve the current lineup for this year at E3. I don't think that's an unreasonable request.

Listen guys. E3 is gonna be the same thing as every year. Tons of marketing of games that are coming out in the next 6 months that we already know about with a few unexpected/new things that were already rumored sprinkled here and there.

Things like the Twilight Princess reveal and Konami's comedy gold a couple years ago come but once a decade. Things you'll hear/read moments after every conference next week: "That's it? :\", "Where was X?", "What happened to Y??!", "That was pathetic." etc., etc.

I love E3.

What says it was ever destined for this fall? The rumor seems to be it was never any good, it never got the okay to even be announced, there's no reason to think it was ever shipping this year.

That was the opinion of a few mods around here. Might be true, might not be. Would make sense, especially if it was a huge project.

Quality response. We already know Project Beast exists, and Sony's confirmed multiple times that The Last Guardian is still in development, so neither will be huge shocking announcements like Sony had last year. I'm not trying to say these aren't great announcements, I'm simply stating that at this rate I don't know if Sony still has many surprises left in stock.

Pretty much this post honestly. From both MS and Sony we'll get maybe one or two new things but most of the stuff we'll see is either coming this year or before E3 next year. I believe with MS we'll see a project that's a few years off if anything.

I expect big things but I'm not expecting megaton after megaton from either MS or Sony. Despite rumors. 2015 will be a bigger year for both consoles.

Analyzing Sony's E3 2014 games (what's likely):

- DriveClub was supposed to release at launch. After an 11 month delay, it's now Sony's big fall exclusive.
- The Order: 1886 was supposes to release this fall, not it's been delayed to 2015.
- Uncharted PS4 was already revealed back at VGX 2013.
- The Last Guardian was supposed to release back in 2011 as a PS3 game.
- Project Beast was leaked at the beginning of May.

Depressing.

Well unless it's a midtier game I don't think we can expect much from Sony first party this fall. That's where the 3rd party games will pick up the slack. Sony has done well to position itself alongside Ubisoft for WD and AC and also Activision for Destiny. Those games will be the huge drivers for Sony this Holiday.

I would be satisfied with Sony's presser if all of the above games were shown. However, they'll need to show some damn good gameplay for each of the games that are mentioned.

I think Microsoft will bring it at E3 though. They always do. I really enjoyed their conference last year. It was nothing but games. Straight to the point. Clear and concise. Sony's conference on the other hand almost put me to sleep. Executives droning on about things that I couldn't care about.

lol Dude, I was joking.

Cancelling a game they think is bad, essentially firing Amy Hennig and giving UC4 to TLoU directors, and delaying The Order a few months doesn't seem like a concerning series of setbacks. I can't imagine Sony is sweating any of those things. The SSM thing was a moneypit, and they won't be happy about that, but it's not going to affect their portfolio for the audience, SSM have only put out GoW games for years, and they will still ship GoW4.
Stig's game is only notable because we heard about it, otherwise nothing would have been lost and no one would have known about it, certainly the vast majority of the PlayStation audience have no idea that project existed.
A whole second AAA team was broken up and millions were lost, on top of losing one of the main creative directors in Stig. I have no idea how on earth they wouldn't be sweating that, on top of losing 1/3 biggest names at Naughty Dog and a few that followed suit. Sony will be fine, but don't try to downplay a few shitty situations for Sony.

What games were huge shocking announcements last year? A re-reveal of TLG would shit on any announcement from last E3 imo because it's been gone for so many years people have given up on it.

I would love to see Sony reveal a trailer for a crazy fuckin 1st party Morpheus exclusive, along with pricing and release date in 2015. That would be more megaton than anything else.

And still the majority of players don't know about Project Beast...
While Cboat leaked alot of last years MS conference, it was still a good conference, even though I knew about alot of stuff...

If you just find joy within the announcement itself, you should avoid the gaming side 1-2 months before E3 starts.

This is possibly the highest quality 1st/2nd party lineup SCE has ever had at E3, especially when you throw in Rime, Everybody's Gone to the Rapture, Deep Down and Shadow of the Beast. I want you guys to understand this while you're busy being depressed.

If it really bothers you that none of these games are surprising, I'm going to suggest you stop reading NeoGAF and random twitter insiders in the weeks leading up to the show.

And that won't be all.
They're surely gonna show something for 2015 and maybe one game for 2016.
Apart from WWS, there is also Quantic Dream and who knows if there are 3rd party exclusives.

Looking back actually, Sony announced way more stuff at their initial PS4 unveiling rather than E3. Still, those were some quality announcements like Killzone, Infamous Second Son, Knack (lol), and The Order. Not to mention the 2rd party stuff like Destiny, Final Fantasy 15, and Kingdom Hearts 3. All titles we didn't know about previously.

As for TLG, I'd completely agree you except for that fact that Sony's said multiple times this past year that TLG is still in the mix. While that doesn't confirm anything E3 wise, we still at least know the title isn't abandoned like The Agent probably is.

because those things happen ALL. THE. TIME. with all game developers and successful companies. and it rarely seems to really sink a ship unless is causes the whole crew to bail. (ie: what id software is rumored to be going through)

people need to read what is actually being said in response to these doom and gloom posts.

Two people leave, and suddenly the sky is falling.

Uncharted lost its game director (Justin Richmond) , its head writer and creative director (Amy Hennig), and its lead character artist (Michael Knowland). The number of people leaving becomes less relevant when you consider the influence, power, and creativity of the ones that got the boot. People like Amy Hennig are hailed as creative geniuses when they are on staff, but when they cut out suddenly we're not supposed to be concerned because "Oh she was just one person on a staff of hundreds!"

And again I'll qualify these developments as "setbacks". Not the end of the world, but somewhat worrisome. I'd say the same thing about Marty O'Donnell's very abrupt termination from Bungie.

I don't remember this ever happening with Naughty Dog, SSM or PD, who are Sony's top tier studios.

When TakeTwo shuttered Irrational Games and fired the entire staff, people were legitimately shocked and dismayed. And rightly so. There was none of this bizarre "Hey guys don't flip out this happens ALL THE TIME" damage control.

Why should the frequency of studio closures and mass layoffs make them any less concerning? Shouldn't the fact that another developer dies every six months or so actually make studio closures more worrisome?

There was quite a bit of it, because guess what? These things happen all the time.

I don't blame them if they don't show it. People are hounds. Even with the knowledge that it's not anywhere near finished and all that people will rip it apart if it has tearing/fps drops/etc...

No mass exodus at Naughty Dog during the pre-Uncharted 1 period?
Seriously? Do some research, buddy!

I'm talking about Sony Santa Monica basically killing an entire team of people making a game. I would consider that roughly equivalent to closing a studio, yes.
