I'm going to buy a Wii U

I back zombi U. Mario and others have all the good press they need (and they deserve it) but ZU really needs to be on your radar.

Be sure to pick up ZombiU. It's a great game, and one of the few real showcases for the gamepad. It's so cheap everywhere these days that it's a no-brainer (no pun intended)!

This, if your into survival horror. Absolutely loved this game.

Pro Controller, 3D World, Tropical Freeze and 101.

You'll be set for awhile.

One and done. But seriously, just wait till E3. I think there's a 0.00000000000001% chance they announce a price drop or anything, especially since it would be a slap in the face to MK8 bundles, but you never know, and 5 more days won't kill you

I would wait a few more days until E3 has come and gone. But after that:

-Mario Kart 8
-Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
-New Super Luigi U (if you still have a Luigi itch)
-Pikmin 3
-Rayman Legends
-Super Mario 3D World
-The Wonderful 101

Try to find the Mario Kart 8 Wii U bundle. It'll have the system, game (and bonus game! after you register with Club Nintendo), and a red Mario Wii Remote Plus. Make sure to pick up a Pro Controller or two as well.

Does buying a Wii U is such an event that everyone makes a thread about it now? We already have the "frak that I'm buying a Wii U now" thread (or something like that title), so maybe it's not necessary to start a new one each time... :/

Such a debby downer.

Every week we get a "LTTP: I just bought a Vita"

I gotta love that people have to think soooo much about buying a Wii U. I don't want to think of how much effort it will take those people when deciding on actual big things like a house, a car, etc.

For now, you still get a second game for free with MK8 (which ones are available depends on your region). In terms of first party software, I'd say you can get a fairly balanced mix with Tropical Freeze, 3D World, Wind Waker HD and Pikmin 3. When you get the system, try playing with the Gamepad for a while. If it feels right to you, you're set, otherwise, you can always get a Pro Controller. Also, I'd definitely spring for an ethernet adapter.

That said, even if there won't be a price cut (which is rather unlikely this close to the MK8 release), they could announce some immediate releases or deals at E3 that you might prefer to spend your money on. For now, the system isn't running away, and the digital event is only 4 days off. Of course, I certainly won't be trying to stop you if you can't resist the urge any longer.

Haha, not having a console makes you forget all the games this system has. Tropical freeze and Pikmin 3 are definite buys.

I don't think they will announce a price drop at E3 but I'm still waiting until after E3 to buy one. Just need another new game or two to push me over the edge.

Check out the list of free games you can get when you buy MK8. From the NoA list, I think you would be fine with picking any of the following (except for Wii Party U)

doFpu9YFDin-zPZU-xY4aLXSGH594PEx.png

Pikmin 3 is the most next gen looking of the bunch, but WWHD still looks great in 1080p.

NSMBU is...well, a NSMB game on the Wii U. It's fun.

Other than those, if you like action games like bayonetta, Devil may cry, Kingdom hearts, etc the Wonderful 101 is good fun, even if the game doesn't properly teach you the mechanics.
This guy has a good set of videos teaching you how to play https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sdHbPXNJvVE
Then, of course, there is 3D World which is one of the best 3D platformers you can find in the market even if it doesn't reach the heights of the galaxy series.

Other games I could recommend are: DKCTF, Nintendo Land, Lego city: Undercover, etc.
Also, check out the eshop. There is some fun stuff in there as well.

I'd say ZombiU, Pikmin 3, TW101, SM3DW are must buys. If you haven't played Wind Waker, also that. Be sure to check the eShop as well. NES Remix is great and very addictive if you like arcade-y games and leader-boards.

Not all games accept the pro-controller, so you might want to check that before buying one, just to guarantee that the game you want to use if with is compatible. Best Pikmin 3 experience is with pointer controls, so maybe consider getting a Wii remote and nun-chuck if you are interested in it. I personally love Nintendo Land, but it is best played with more people. If you want local multiplayer it is great, and you will also need a Wii-remote for that.

There is also games like Tropical Freeze, NSMBU and NSLU if you like platformers. Probably the best platformers around.

Everyone looking for an E3 price drop has gone batshit insane.

There's no way they will give the middle finger to everyone who JUST bought a console for MK8 by dropping the price immediately afterward.

I mean, if they do I'll eat crow, but it would be an absurd move. If there ends up being a 2014 price drop, it'll be for the holiday timeframe, not at E3.

Wait... But, but... weekend...

For what it's worth I think a price cut at E3 is very unlikely. Only because Mario Kart 8 just brought in the most new Wii U owners since last holiday and Nintendo knows better than piss them off with a move like that the first thing they do.

Also for what I recommend: Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (best platformer on the system. If after playing it you still want to play some more platformers then try Super Mario 3D World and New Super Mario Bros. U + New Super Luigi U DLC which are both excellent and different kind of games), Pikmin 3 (Wiimote+Nunchuk is the best way to play this gem), The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD is an excellent game with improvements that make it a game worth playing even if you already played Wind Waker on GC (if not then it's a no-brainer), if local multiplayer is your thing then you simply can't skip Nintendo Land (it's still fun as a single-player game though) and I think a Wii U Pro Controller is a good way to play games like Mario Kart 8. Oh and don't forget the Mario Kart 8 promotion where you get a free game.

This. I expect a price-cut of 50$/€ before this holiday season but no way it's going to be announced at this E3.

Totally off-topic but not able to make an own thread...Sorry for that

NOE closes one of their 2 premises in Germany

Unfortunately there is no english announcement yet but it has been officially confirmed against German authorities.

It basically says that the Grossostheim premise will be shut down (incl. warehouse) and sold while some people are relocated to Frankfurt. In total 130 people are being sacked.

What if you own those things already? I'm not thinking about buying a Wii U, I'm buying one. Just want some recommendations :/ Forgive me for coming to neogaf to talk about my hobby.

I'll post a resolution frame rate thread if that's what you really want.

A pro controller is a must. Definitely get one of those when you buy the Wii U. It's an amazing controller with silly long battery life.

For games I'd recommend SM3DW and DKCTF. The Wonderful 101 is great, but it's certainly not for everyone. Zombie U is worth checking out as well.

Btw, if you didn't own a Wii:

  • Skyward Sword
  • Dead Space Extraction
  • Super Smash Bros. Brawl
  • Super Mario Galaxy 1&2
  • Metroid Prime Trilogy if you can find it (a bit pricey...one of those Nintendo titles that rose in value due to limited print)
  • Okami
  • Resident Evil 4
  • REmake if you didn't play it on the GCN
  • Mario Kart Wii
  • Haven't seen much of it, but I hear Sins and Punishment was a decent game worth looking in to.

To be honest the logic behind a price drop is escaping me, especially right after the release of the MK8 bundle.

I mean, if you're buying a Wii U almost specifically for MK8, the bundle is right there, ready to go. And there are already other options such as buying the $200 refurb.

People get on Nintendo's case for silly decisions but honestly I'd find a price drop so soon after MK8's release to be really stupid on their part and I don't know why anyone really expects it.

That said E3 is right there and you never 100% know what's going to happen. If not a price drop then maybe a bargain SKU or something. IDK. In any case the current bundles may end up holding their value anyway.

Maybe it's because the Wii U was treated like shit on GAF for 1,5 year?

I think a new SKU might be in the works. But that won't be released until holiday. I don't want to wait that long anyway.

Welcome to the club.
My suggestions are:

Lego City Undercover
Rayman Legends (unless you already have it on any other system)
The Wonderful 101
Trine 2 (eShop)
Super Mario 3D World
Need for Speed: Most Wanted U
CrazyCoaster Delux (eShop) (It's a roller coaster builder and simulator, very different from Roller Coaster Tycoon)
Pikmin 3
Scream Kitty and his Buddy on Rails (eShop) (name sounds childish/ kiddy, but don't be fooled. This game is HARD, I suggest checking out the OT here on neogaf.)

Mario 3D World
Pikmin 3
Wind Waker HD
Donkey Kong
Wonderful 101

Those are the main ones you should focus on first.

I recommend the Pro Controller if local multiplayer is your thing.

Also, there is not going to be a price cut at E3. They literally just released the Mario Kart bundle. Relax.

Not sure if i will buy a wii u or not, but I am waiting for E3.
Even if they won't drop the price on the mario kart bundle they might drop the price on one of the others or announce another bundle.
There is nothing to lose by waiting a week.

I bought zombi u day one and absolutely hated it. I thought it was very bland and boring. I recommend nsmbu, mario 3d, Rayman, wwhd, dkctf, and 101.

Oh and right away download earthbound on th vc.

You are making a wise decision, my friend. Here are some things I'd suggest picking up in order of priority:

1. Wii U Pro Controller. In my opinion it's a more comfortable controller than the GamePad for just about any game.

2. Super Mario 3D World. Quite possibly the greatest Mario game in existence.

3. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. One of the best 2D platformers ever created.

4. ZombiU. Very underrated survival horror game that really takes advantage of the GamePad's unique capabilities.

Overall it's a great system as long as you don't expect a constant stream of titles for it. Enjoy!

- Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze
- New Super Mario Bros U (Consider the Super Luigi U DLC too)
- Nintendoland (If you see it for cheap and need a party game)
- Pikmin 3
- Rayman Legends (Best version)
- Super Mario 3D World
- The Wonderful 101
- The Legend of Zelda The Wind Waker HD

- NES Remix 1
- NES Remix 2

Keep an eye out for Super Smash Bros 4, Bayonetta 2, X, Yarn Yoshi & The Legend of Zelda.

- Wii U Pro Controller

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate is a great buy if you're into thoughtful combat. If you like Souls combat, MH is like that but with more emphasis.

Mario Kart 8 has finally convinced me to buy a Wii U. The game looks amazing, and Luigi's death stare is a moment in gaming I simply cannot miss.

I'm going to probably get it today after work or tomorrow morning. So my question to you is, what else should I pick up for my new Wii U? Recommend controllers, games, accessories, and all that jazz.

wait until E3.

No love for Deus Ex? It was a nice port and improvement over the other systems, WiiU is the definitive edition.

You can find the game at a fair price these days.

Da fuq!!?

For me Nintendo ever since was Grossostheim, they even included little easter-eggs and hints in localisations (i.e. Secret of Evermore). I'm feeling sad, especially for the employees, even though Nintendo seems to stay in Germany and making it's Frankfurt division their HQ for Europe.

Do you honestly think they'll drop price on the Mario Kart 8 bundle?

Definitely not.

Also, guess what.

The vast majority of retail chains will refund you the difference if an item you buy goes on sale or gets a discount within a week of you buying it (Best Buy I know for a fact does this).

So don't listen to these scrubs. Go buy and have a fun weekend.

The best value would be the MK8 bundle because you get a Wii remote, MK8 and a free game to get you started (I recommend Pikmin 3 with that Wii remote and nunchuck). All of Nintendo's exclusives are recommended, especially 3D World, DK and TW101.

In terms of game recommendations, is there a single Nintendo-made game on the Wii U that isn't worth it? I can't think of one. Well, maybe Wii Sports Club if you've had your fill and don't care about online play. I've heard mixed things about Game & Wario as well. Otherwise, Nintendo's output has been stellar thus far on the system.

It's going to be an echo chamber.

Mario Kart 8
NSMBU/NSLU
Mario 3D World
Wind Waker HD
Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze
Pikmin 3
Wii Party U
NES Remix 1 and 2

Pretty much all must-haves depending on who you talk to.

I haven't seen alot of people recommend Nintendo Land, so...Nintendo Land. Yeah it's really great for multiplayer, which everyone will say, but I have a lot of fun playing it by myself too and about half the attractions are designed as single player experiences. A lot of the attractions remind me of good arcade games and are very replayable if you care about things like getting the best possible rating and completing acheivement-like challenges. Plus I am sure the game is cheap by now.

Do we need more OPs like this? Feels like there's been a surge of "I'm gonna buy" topics that are better suited as discussions with one's signifigant other.

But grats, I guess.

This is what I did...

I bought the MK8 Wii U bundle. In the UK this gets you the Premium (32gb) console, Mario Kart 8 and a free game (I chose NSMBU)...a console and two games for £199

Then I bought ZombiU for £5.99
