Mirror's Edge E3 2014 "Prototype Gameplay" trailer and DICE message

The game will release in 2024 the rate this game's development is progressing at. I liked everything they had to say and show but I'm still disappointed because I expected way more.

They lost me the moment they started talking about combat. Combat was by far the worst part of Mirrors Edge. I don't want any of it in the sequel. Completely misses the point of the game.

Yeah, I was a little disappointed at the first mention of combat. Then I thought, oh, maybe there's no guns, but then I saw an enemy drop one a few seconds later. I don't mind dudes with batons, but I don't like running from bullets.

I'd play the shit out of this prototype right now if I had it

like it looked like something I wanna play right now, in this state

I need it

I was hoping we'd get something more but that footage still gets me excited about that fact the game is actually gonna come out

edit: Faith jumping off the building gave me major goosebumps

So the game regressed ?
I remember reading somewhere that what was shown last year was supposed to be in game (or that's what they wanted us to believe, it was so obviously not).
Or am I imagining things and no one ever said that.

Art built specifically for that trailer, I imagine. Never intended to be real levels.

They fucked it up. They showed concept art and "prototype" footage - makes you wonder if this is actually the prototype they had in production a couple of years ago, and which was eventually cancelled. Not to mention it looks like pre-alpha footage of the 2008 game.

Also, too much combat, and too much white. As if they're trying to emulate the aesthetics of the previous game, except they understood shit have no idea what they're doing.

This is the only game at the EA conference that interested me... I've been meaning to play the first game. Hopefully this makes it out next year.

Many of those levels are just gameplay tests. They obviously haven't gone through any serious visual passes.

The combat looks much more fluid than ME1. I think combat isn't the main focus of the game, but when it was forced upon you, it's pretty janky

Looks like placeholder textures to me honestly so that's not fully representative of the final game. Like almost everything in EA's frigging conference was.

Oh mah gahhh that looks awesome. I'm happy they kept the bright white cleanliness of the first game - and I don't mind the bit more punching and kicking we see here.

I think it's good that EA are slowly going down the path indies have been practising for a while now, which is more open, collaborative development, getting fans'/players' feedback at an earlier stage, so they can better get at what people like and don't. Or would you rather have Mirror's Edge designed by a focus group?

Also, the point about making it accessible, they basically said that each area will have a whole different bunch of paths you can take. So if you want to just get to the end of the story without being frustrated by having to do the same super-difficult bit again and again, you can. Whilst if you want to do speed runs and get really proficient at the game, there'll be loads of ways to shave time off.

I'll be disappointed if this isn't a full sequel though, as some have suggested

YAY @ what they showed.

Boo @ Conceptual Prototype. Jesus, it's like nobody started development for the gen until a few months before the consoles released.

Anyway, I'm excited about changes to the combat, and that they kept guns. The implementation was spotty in the first game, yeah, but the moments where it fit (basically, any spot where I was able to quickly take enemies down without having to actually stop and fight) I thought it added something great to the overall experience of being on the run.

If they're addressing the flow of combat, I'm all for them keeping it in the game.

I'm also glad that it seems like they're keeping a clean aesthetic in terms of game design. For being an early gen game, the original Mirror's Edge held up really well over the years and a lot of that is thanks to the really clean, minimalist design.

What I Don't Like: That they "prettied up" Faith.

Hi,

It's been a full year since we revealed that we are indeed making a new Mirror's Edge game here at DICE. I wanted to let you know that the game is progressing nicely and I think you’re going to love it! I know many of you probably wish we would show more of the game, but we’re still pretty early in development and our passionate core Mirror’s Edge team is working full on to make the best game possible.

Mirror's Edge is all about fluidity, physicality and movement. We want to make sure we evolve the game and Faith in a way that gives you an exciting new player experience. We want the game to be accessible enough to embrace new players while at the same time reward the skilled player. We are also committed to provide the best 1st person close combat in the world. Advanced combat that is integrated into an improved fluidity of movement. These are not small undertakings, but they are challenges that we are up for.

I am fortunate enough to play the game we are building every day and I cannot wait to share it with all of you and soon enough, I will. The way that the team has reduced all the little obstacles of playing the first game, while adding a bunch of innovative stuff makes it an extremely thrilling experience. The uniqueness of the Mirror’s Edge universe is still there, but with a new and fresh feel to it. We're also dedicated to let you know more about both Faith and the world that she is a part of this time around. But more about that later...

Thanks for all feedback, questions and love that have come our way during the past year. It's our fuel to keep going and never give up on what we have set out to achieve. Keep it coming!

You’ll be hearing more from me soon!

I wish we'd have gotten a bit more, but I'm just happy to have confirmation the game is still being touched up. If we hadn't gotten a word about it this year, I'd worry it was cancelled in the post-BF4 madness.

I'm excited for the new Parkour system. It looks sooo hot.

:)

So proud to work on this.

GIVE HARDLINE BETA. D: I'm sitting here waiting for it to pop up on Origin. ;_;

The reason it's not far along is because they're converting everything from UE3 to Frostbite, I think.

For some reason, it seems it's not easy to do what Mirror's Edge did in Frostbite.

If they're aiming for an Open World, that would be quite a hindrance.

One year later, still just as hyped as ever. I have Faith.

Same. I thought the conceptual prototype was really exciting. I'm obviously disappointed that the game isn't further along in development, but still! New Mirror's Edge with kinetic combat and a kickass soundtrack!

We are going to have a REALLY interesting thread discussing prototype footage showing once the news cycle ends

EDIT: Speaking of the footage...it looks like mirrors edge still which makes me happy...and love the hit and run combat

Thanks, congrats and keep going!
From what i saw, you and your team have understand the essence of Mirror's Edge.
I'm a huge fan of the first and super hyped now :)

Yes many in the team love the first game. I started working on the second a year ago and having a blast so far.

TBH, I don't mind the combat as long as we're never forced to use guns just to reasonably pass an area.

EatChildren and DICE already stated they're making Combat less a focus in this outing. Which means they get what fans want from this.

They don't necessarily have to have good aim.

I think combat can be fine if Faith never uses a gun (it's the future so the excuse is that they have fingerprint scanners) and you are rewarded for attacking/disabling/evading your enemy quickly and without breaking your speedy pace.

If you can, please nudge the right people towards a reiteration of the "Test of Faith" achievement. I can handle combat so long as I know there's the option to never use a gun for the playthrough at all.

I look forward to seeing the fruits of your labour in future. :)

I love when a team is ambitious but I'm afraid that by trying to do a lot of stuff they forget what's really important.
