Eiji Aonuma: “No one explicitly said that that was Link.”

Posting again for a new page;

If this is Link, then where is his sword? I've combed the trailer, and this protagonist is only carrying a bow and arrow, which as I said, seems to be the female weapon of choice these days.

When has Link ever been shown without a sword?

There's a sword on the right side of the horse next to the pack in its sheath. You can see it REAL briefly when he/she takes out that laser arrow.

the cloak....

add only similar cloak and its still perhaps a stretch is ganon from Wind Waker

I don't believe the Ganon stuff. But where is the white washing accusement coming from? Isn't his usual form as a boar like monster? In various incarnations now he has been a pig, black as a charcoal, green, blue etc. I don't ever remember him looking like a normal non-White man though.

Ganon as a demon takes a lot of forms. Ganondorf as a person is a race of humans called Gerudo, who have that skin color. Ganondorf is the human manifestation of Ganon, born to the Gerudo tribe.

I thought it was Zelda the first time I saw it. That game has a different art-style and not all Zelda's look the same (Tetra for instance sure looks different than TP Zelda, same with SS Zelda), and a lot of fans have talked about having a game with Zelda as the main character. It looked like a female in the face, it had longer hair than Link normally would, and the character used a bow, not a sword -- Zelda is known for using a bow. I told my brother that right away, but he didn't really buy that the character was Zelda. I don't think we'll get a straight answer for a long time anyway though, so not much can ultimately be found out.

I do think the 3DS game is Majora though and my feeling is that if that's the case that they'll talk about the Zelda series as a whole during those 90 mins, so maybe they will give some clarity, but I doubt it.

I KNEW something was strange with the fact that suddenly Epona doesn't have the white Mane and now has a black one!

Guesses?!?!
1- That's Zelda.
2- That's Link's sis.
3- Character Customization! Anyone can be "the Hero" and Link makes Cameos maybe I guess ...!

Yeah, those seem to be the possibilities (or Zelda/Link's daughter, unless he's trolling, 1 or 2 please, preferably 1, playing as tomboy Zelda would be great.

4. If it were Kojima being evil and trolling that this is indeed Zelda or whatever but we're just watching her kick ass even though we're gonna actually play as a different character. That would be Kojima-trolling.

Err...This can't be a direct sequel to wind waker...That was Phantom hourglass and then spirit tracks.

Does beg the question as to which part of the timeline this game falls under.

How is it reaching when the director himself admits it's not Link? Is it that outrageous to assume it's the next iconic character in the series?

He's...not admitting that it's not Link? The quote is “No one explicitly said that that was Link.” He deliberately left it vague.

Yeah but the character isn't using it. The sword is always Links go to weapon.

So we have:

- A different horse with a black mane rather than white

- Right handed while Link is left handed

- Feminine features

- No confirmation on it being Link

All signs are pointing to this being a female character.

I will bet money that this game is set in the Wind Waker world shortly before that world is flooded in the 'Era Without a Hero' and this new character, whoever he/she is, is trying to save the world but will ultimately fail and the world is flooded. Hence why this might not be Link, as that time period had no 'Hero of Time', and why some things look really Wind Waker-y. Would also explain the vast open world and the mountains as Wind Waker also had a HUGE world and the tops of the mountains became the new islands.

i could also be pulling this out of my ass and i'm WAY off but i'm sticking with it until otherwise stated!

Sounds very plausible to me. Even the video talked a lot about wind waker.

I still think it looks like a feminine looking teenager/young adult. This game is gonna ROCK. Damn that animation is insane.

You're right I never noticed it before, it's well covered. It even seems to have a blue hilt like the master sword (but the sheath is pretty generic).

There's like one or two common pattern design in the Zelda universe, and everyone wears them in some form or another, from the enemies to the buildings. Comparing clothes will lead to nothing.

Calling it, it's Zelda. The hair color is dirty blond like Zelda, the character uses a bow like Zelda, the character has a cloak, which only Zelda has ever had, the eye color is light blue like Zelda, and the ears are not Link-shaped:

Which are slightly oval and curved, but pointy, like Zelda.

And it's not like Zelda isn't known to cross-dress or anything.

Regardless of who the character is, it looks more like the Link in that picture than it looks like Zelda, it has the same exact hair as Link, and things like ear shapes and eye colors are minor changes which vary from Zelda game to Zelda game to begin with. Plus the eye color of Link and Zelda in those picture are extremely close to begin with.

I really don't see how those image are suppose to make a point that it's Zelda.

It may not be Link, but it's definitely not Zelda.

I can see this maybe being something like DMC4, where you aren't playing as Dante but as a new, Dante-like character in Nero.

I'm leading towards the character being male, but the pony-tail definitely seems very deliberate. We'll see.

He wouldn't say that if it was Link.

Or they want you to consider the possibility that it isn't Link. Why? Only the people making the game know for sure.

I could believe that it's a SS sequel, featuring Link/Zelda's child or descendant (they were totally going to bone sometime). But parts of me wonders if Aonuma is just trolling to create more discussion - that said, it seems like they want the character's identity to be an important element, as suggested by the cloak.

Favorite theories so far:

1. Takes place well before the Great Flood that spawned drowned Hyrule, as no hero appears to stop the evil, Zelda takes it upon herself to forgo her royalty and try to save the world herself. She ultimately fails. Either that, or a new character. But I like the idea of Zelda going "Screw waiting for the Hero, I can do this!"

2. Sequel to Skyward Sword featuring the daughter of OG Link and Zelda.

What makes this comment interesting to me is that the fans have never had a reason to be confused as to the identity of the protagonist in a Zelda game and Aonuma has never made a comment like this in the past.

Could end up being nothing, but still. Really hope the protagonist isn't Link as we've always known him.
