Eiji Aonuma: “No one explicitly said that that was Link.”

The front of the hair looks the exact same as Link in SS, and Link hair in SS was browinish (more so than Zelda anyway).

I do agree that it's not the same exact Hero, I'm just arguing that it looks more like Link than Zelda.

Could very well turn out to be Zelda or a female-link or something, but if we're going to make comparisons with characters from previous characters, the model is closer to the last few Links than it is to Zelda.

You just spoiled it, Zelda was born a scrawny looking male, and Link was born as Zelda. LE big spoiler.

Thank you

But it cannot possibly be Ravio. We've already seen what he looks like.
You see that he's dark-haired at the end of the game, which would be a pretty drastic change to make here.

While I don't think it's the case, put me in the camp of people who likes to think of it as Aryll or Aryll's descendant. Either way I think it would be cool to step away from Link as the character if only because it might finally let them step away from their pointless insistence on silent protagonists for the series.
They won't, I already know.
The hair and all is the right style to be link, but that ponytail seems like too bizarre of a change to be insignificant. They already toyed with concepts of playing as someone other than your typical Link with the wolf form in TP, perhaps we'll be seeing some sort of multiple-protagonist scenario. Or, probably more accurately, they're just making the character more androgynous so that when you name the character as "you," it can be imagined as either male or female without too much trouble.

Yeah, the boobs may be debatable, but this Link DEFINITELY has hips. It's a female character.

But I don't think it's Zelda.

I really would rather it be a female version of the Hero of Time.

And, if so, I would LOVE for her to still be on a quest to save Zelda. <3<3<3

Come on, Nintendo. Prove how subversive you can be!

Can I just say how beautiful this shot is?

That design is awesome, regardless of however the character is.

It'd be nice for the franchise to have a female leading the game, for a change.

Someone else said it in the last thread, but those hand are definitely somewhat masculine. I wouldn't expect a Japanese artist to design it like that for a female character, would be more slender I think.

Honestly, I'd love to play through as a custom character. You could make it look like a classic Link, or do something a bit crazier.

'Standard' template would be a regular looking Link, that appears in art (and of course, the box art).

You mean all but one of your signs are pointing to this being a different character, not necessarily female.

I thought it was female at first, but after the trailer concluded and nothing relevant was said I just brushed it aside. I can't even say for sure what gender I think this character is. It could go either way.

Really wish we could have seen a lot more.

I don't think they would choose a more feminine looking design if they were just going to decide on another male character so I really do think all signs point to a female character.

Especially the feminine features.

No. Definitely not. Not at all.

But to be clear, it'd be Zelda though. As in, she(well, he) would talk, use magic and arrows, and have whatever personality she/he has. But would be a male.

If your answer remains the same, is it more about playing a girl then?

Yep. Finally lets "YOU" really be the hero of time.

Especially with the open world idea. Makes more sense to really immerse the player in the world.

My Link would of course be the classic version.

Maybe it's pre-Tunic Link and the guy is just fucking with us.

That said, I am quite convinced the not-Link in the trailer is female.

There will be hell to pay if I'm just being trolled.

And it will be totally justified.

It's not Ganondorf, that'd be ridiculous. Now if they made a game where you DO play as Ganondorf I'd be all over it, but the similarities on the bracers (they're not exactly the same) are superficial at best.
How do YOU know, he could be wearing makeup!

It's happening.

The gender discussion has been ongoing about the character shown for a little bit now, and all the theories are interesting.

To hear it from the man himself though, holy fuck.
To hear what from him? He didn't say anything except that maybe that isn't Link since they're not wearing the tunic and cap. Literally nothing was said about gender.

Seriously you guys are reading far too much into a statement that is just being vague with the intent to build up interest.

So now people want a female Link? God, I have never wanted to return more to "Zelda needs to be more like Dark Souls" discussions.

I'm sorry guys but maybe you haven't watched enough anime... there's nothing female about the 'Link' we saw. The jaws and shape of the face is all you need to go on.

I think what Aonuma means is player-created characters, which seems logical since 'Link' has always been a link between player and game.

Didn't Aonuma mention a while back that multi-player was something they were looking at? What if it's custom character creation?

The character doesn't look too different from other Link styles to me, so I didn't even think "Hey, wait, that's a girl..." but maybe I've been programmed to consider anyone who looks remotely like Link to be a guy. And it's kind of sad that without super obvious feminine visual cues that I'm like, nah, it's still gonna be a guy.

I want to be so wrong though.

This wouldn't be the first time in a recent Nintendo game where a character of ambiguous gender with a "flat chest" turned out to be a strong female hero.
Lucina from Fire Emblem: Awakening

I think so.

Open world...and then not only open world, but MMO?!

they would never do that with zelda.

It's about shaking things up. Giving me another male character, while that counts, isn't as impactful. And taking a very important, very famous female character and only making her playable once she's a guy is just weird. What's even the point of that then? And even further, it sends the message that they will only allow your main character to be a guy, even if they have to gender-swap to make that happen.

It'd be like if they made a spin-off game where you play as Saria from Ocarina of Time as she explores the forests. Only she's a guy now. Is she even the character at that point? Link I can enjoy gender-swapping because 1) I like the idea of them mixing it up, 2) I advocate for more female protagonists anyway, especially from long-standing franchises and Nintendo, and 3) Link doesn't have a personality anyway. Except for one game (two, if you make a case for Wind Waker. But I don't, because the second Tetra turns into Zelda, she becomes useless) Zelda is a completely passive character. If they made it so the only time she becomes active is when she's ALSO a dude, that's insulting. It means she can't be an active female protagonist.

I will bet money that this game is set in the Wind Waker world shortly before that world is flooded in the 'Era Without a Hero' and this new character, whoever he/she is, is trying to save the world but will ultimately fail and the world is flooded. Hence why this might not be Link, as that time period had no 'Hero of Time', and why some things look really Wind Waker-y. Would also explain the vast open world and the mountains as Wind Waker also had a HUGE world and the tops of the mountains became the new islands.

i could also be pulling this out of my ass and i'm WAY off but i'm sticking with it until otherwise stated!

I've really wanted a game detailing the Hyrule before it had to be flooded because the Hero of Time never came to save the day. That's not a bad idea.

That would actually kind of be like that made up Zelda leak from before SS, Valley of the Flood. It would be funny if a game like that happened.

I personally don't think Zelda is the right game for that, and would rather that didn't happen.

I absolutely think it is. The design options would be completely in fitting with the Zelda series - nothing like Mii bobble heads, or anything like that.

And you could still play as Link, as standard. All conjecture, obviously, but I'd enjoy that option.

Dunno, I never get emotionally invested in mute main charaters that are custom. I don't feel it's "ME". It's just a random thing with a sword.

A real character with personality appeals to me a lot more. Custom characters feel more disconnected to me than anything.
