Elite: Dangerous - E3 2014 trailer

Never heard of Elite before. This demo gives me strong Privateer vibes. I'm not sure what's so difficult for you to understand about that.

The game looks amazing. The name "Elite: Dangerous" is ridiculously bad.

Well here's some quick education, have a look at how insanely ahead of it's time Elite 2 was.

Comparing E:D and Star Citizen is silly because:

1) They're at vastly different stages of completion and Elite was always slated to be finished well before Star Citizen would even be in beta.

2) At this point, they're going in very different directions, E:D skewing more towards something for lone wolf players who don't mind only interacting with other players sparingly, if at all.

I'll have milked many hours out of E:D before the first episode of Squadron 42 is released or Persistent Universe is playable, even at the earliest estimate. The genre's been dead for over a decade so there's certainly room for them both (all) to co-exist. Don't be dumb, people. And if you're regretting crowdfunding a game's development because it's not anywhere near finished when it's not yet supposed to be, you should probably stop crowdfunding games.

I am enjoying the beta. I can't seem to get my HOTAS setup the way I want no matter what I try, but it does work with Track IR.

Well that explains alot...Now go do some research.

The very fact that Wing Commander, hell, any space sim, even the X franchise, owe alot to Elite is saying something.

Hear ye, hear ye. Right now I'm playing the Premium Beta of E:D, and can't wait to eventually get my hands of Star Citizen, EVE Valkyrie, and most other upcoming space sims out there. It's one of the primary genres that make me love PC gaming (since HOTAS + KB have always been more at home with PCs).

Just to make this clear, I don't regret funding SC. I regret not funding Elite.

1984. Very impressive. Looks like the forefather to all my favorite space flight games of the early 90s. Wing Commander, Privateer, X-Wing, etc.
Glad yto hear you like all those games too. One of the reasons why I thought PC gaming was a class of its own was because of the space sim, and not because of FPS.

Love the sound design when the ship drops out of Warp(?) and is near the sun. Just love the dull sound design in space like Battlestar Galactica.

.. And got a twitchy eye when he didnt allign the ship to the Babylon 5-esque Hangar Door....

The only game I ever kickstarted, just because it looked at one point like it was going to miss its funding goal, being overshadowed by SC. Can't believe how great this is looking

I think this is the position I'm sitting at too. I don't know how I missed the original Elite campaign, but the fact that I did has me regretting it quite a bit. I think I got lost in all the Star Citizen hype I just sort of put Elite off to the side. Shame too, because Elite is looking incredible. I guess I just need to hope for a quick Beta period, so I can purchase the full game on release.

The thump sound when the canisters hit the ship is amazing... Sounds soo good. And what's even crazier is that the mixing for this game probably isn't even complete yet.

Twelve year old me played the living hell out of the Wing Commander (based Mark Hamill in WC4!) series, X-Wing, and Privateer. I couldn't even begin to calculate the hours I spent in this games.

I'm honestly shocked we haven't had refreshed, HD releases of these games come out. I would pay top dollar for an HD remastered Wing Commander series. Disney/Lucasarts also needs to release a new version of Tie Fighter. The closest thing we've gotten are the ultra arcady Rogue Squadron or the ultra arcady space mini-missions in The Old Republic.

Jesus, just from Youtube you can feel the power in those faster than light drives.

Not going to be shelling out $170 for the premium beta (anyone actually do that?) but I'm definitely keeping this on my radar.

I would pay absurd amounts of money for a Tie Fighter remake.

So is your video game history and knowledge, apparently. :D

Privateer was an updated clone of Elite, for those who don't know that.

The name is just fine, I like it alot. But then I still have my original Elite box and everything so I guess I'm an old fan of the series.

I'm not a big fan of the name, 'Elite' is already a rank in their structure, so calling it Rank: Rank is kind of odd.

I'm gonna go make a new milbro shooter called Captain: Lieutenant.

Me too. I played the living hell out of X-wing / Tie Fighter back in the 90's. Some of the best space combat sims ever made IMHO, even to this day. Only Freespace really comes close to dethroning it. What I wouldn't pay for a modern version of X-Wing that supported modern HOTAS setups and Track IR with career modes and procedural campaigns.

What about Lieutenant Colonel, Lieutenant General, or Major General?

I'm just messing. I agree when I thought of Elite: Dangerous I was kinda meh with the name scheme.

It's not the best name, I agree. I wonder how problematic it would be for them if they just changed the name to Elite on release date. Lots of games do reboots while stripping subtitles or numbers so it wouldn't harm Elite in any way, especially considering how long it's been since we've seen an Elite game.

Wonderful trailer, can't wait for the game to come out. Needs at least one trailer with "By the Beautiful Blue Danube" waltz.

And to think this nearly didn't get funded...

Well to be fair Braben has been blowing hot air out his ass in regards to Elite for decades.

In the end I funded it for the minimum that would get me a copy of the game, and I'm overjoyed that he's proven everyone wrong.

Yep. Sign me up.

Welcome to twelve hours ago. I feel no need to make an excuse for not having played or heard about a single game from 1984. I was three years old.

I stick by my opinion on this game: it looks INCREDIBLE and right up my alley. The name is laughably bad. Elite: Dangerous? Come on, son.

I've also never played Freespace. Growing up in Argentina, I was reliant on what made it down there or I could easily have family ship to me. I played a TON of games in the 80s and 90s, but I'll admit my exposure to what was out there was probably limited compared to a kid in the US.

Which gaffers have dropped 150 for the Premium Beta?

No rift for me either, sadly i had DK1 for a month (from a friend) but not when i decided to put my cash for premium beta.

I've got trackIR though.

From all comments i've seen of oculus + elite is that its a-m-a-z-i-n-g

There's many impressions already on reddit/official forums but from E3 2014, there's this one

Braben plays with DK2, lucky guy.

Here.
Err, I'm thinking more about "space sims" as cockpit simulators where you fly around shooting (and trading) stuff, preferablly using a flightstick instead of M+K (HOTAS + K is more likely). X and Independence War 2 is more in like with the trading in space concept, while games like the X-Wing/TIE Fighter and Freespace series are more combat oriented. Notice how I ommited mentioning Homeworld Remastered and EVE as they aren't really these types of games, so Shallow Space and Enemy Starfighter might actually be disqualified from the list.

Wow man, if you enjoyed the old Xwing games then you owe it to yourself to get a copy of either Freespace 1 or 2 (preferably both) and play them. Some of the best space sim fighter games ever made. I would pay hundreds of dollars for a modern Freespace 3.

Man this looks really promising and had totally slipped past me. I've been looking for a good reason to bust out my Rift again... but that alpha price is a bit much.

I upgraded from normal beta to premium beta last night while I couldn't sleep because I was freezing my balls off.

Messed around with it a bit with KB+M.

Not really a KB+M game I'd have to say is my first impression. Especially since the mouse cursor tracks off my main monitor and subsequently causes the game to lose focus.

But it's beta. Gonna try with gamepad and my Rift DK1 tonight.
